WWE Vince McMahons Unsolved Lockbox Mystery Explained

What happened with WWE’s unsolved lockbox mystery in the build-up to Wrestlemania 32? WWE fans might’ve soured on Shane McMahon during his time as Smackdown Live’s general manager and the self-proclaimed “best in the world” but when the boss’ son returned on a February 2016 episode of Raw, the audience blew the roof straight off the arena with a chorus of “this is awesome.” Boasting a reputation for jumping from tall stuff and hanging with some of the industry’s finest, Shane held a fond place in the hearts of the WWE universe, and he’d arrived to seize control of Monday Night Raw from his dastardly sister.

To do this, Shane had to go through his father, Vince, and the patriarch of the McMahon family wasted no time is announcing a Hell In A Cell match between his son and The Undertaker at Wrestlemania 32, with Shane getting control of Raw should he win. The story was simple but effective. The cell stipulation allowed Shane to do what he does best, The Undertaker added prestige to the event, and the prospect of a gloating Stephanie ensured fans were firmly on Shane’s side. But the story needed a reason for Vince McMahon to grant Shane this opportunity in the first place. After all, if the boss didn’t want his son in charge of Raw, what was stopping him just refusing? The answer was the lockbox.

Upon his return, Shane announced that he possessed a lockbox containing something his father didn’t want to be made public, and he used this leverage to get his chance at managing Raw. If The Undertaker won, Shane would have to relinquish the mystery box. Of course, The Undertaker came out of Wrestlemania 32 the victor, and Vince promptly announced the lockbox had been dealt with. The mystery has never been mentioned again since, and fans never found out the dirt Shane had inside that fabled chest.

In essence, the lockbox was a plot device that allowed Shane to blackmail his way to ‘Mania. There was never any hint or suggestion at what might be inside, and all indications suggest that WWE never actually devised a solution, always intending the lockbox to remain unopened, both literally and figuratively. Naturally, this disappointed many fans who were invested in the Shane and Undertaker feud. WWE dangled the carrot of Shane dishing some juicy secrets on Vince McMahon, and to simply have the boss succeed in burying the truth forever felt massively anti-climactic. Some have compared the lockbox to Pulp Fiction’s suitcase MacGuffin – a little insulting to Quentin Tarantino, given that the lockbox lacked the same symbolic importance that Marsellus Wallace’s case held.

The unsolved lockbox mystery is a fine example of WWE’s tendency to overbook their storylines during Wrestlemania season. So often, an angle begins strongly before ultimately becoming convoluted, messy and impossible to resolve in a satisfying way. This problem can also be seen in the Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey Wrestlemania 35 match. WWE had something fans were loving, but burdened the feud with unnecessary complications – Becky being removed from the match, replaced by Charlotte Flair, put back in, injured, etc. The lockbox suffers from a similar lack of long-term planning. Someone on WWE’s creative team dropped the lockbox line with no foresight on how the idea would develop and, ultimately, the whole thing was abandoned.

It’s unlikely that WWE will ever revisit the lockbox story, but fans continue to develop theories on what might’ve been inside. While Vince McMahon has no shortage of skeletons in his closet (in kayfabe, obviously), the most logical suggestions involve an agreement that would’ve written Stephanie out of WWE’s future. Obviously, the lockbox couldn’t contain anything that might hand Shane power in the company, as this would render the fight against ‘Taker pointless. Others have speculated that the lockbox might’ve invoked a past McMahon storyline, perhaps the Authority’s feud against Daniel Bryan, or the “Vince’s illegitimate son” angle. Unfortunately, such conjecture is the closest WWE’s lockbox will ever come to being opened.
