The Games with Gold program rolls on for Xbox owners with games like Injustice and The King’s Bird releasing free of charge to Gold subscribers. While the Gold freebies continue to play second fiddle to the releases coming every month to Xbox Game Pass, it’s still a great place to check out forgotten Xbox 360 gems and underrated indie hits. The last few months of Xbox Games with Gold have offered Capcom’s Dark Void, Lego Batman: The Video Game, and the fun board game/RPG hybrid Armello, and this month offers similarly interesting offerings.

June is typically not a month one thinks of when it comes to diving into the backlog or taking advantage of free game offerings like Games with Gold. The influx of E3 announcements and digital showcases from individual publishers crowd out the headspace normally dedicated to checking out games off the beaten path. Thankfully, any of June’s games will stick around as long as one’s Xbox Live Gold or Game Pass Ultimate subscription remains valid.

The Xbox Games with Gold titles for June 2021 have been announced in a video on the official Xbox YouTube channel. Players can grab The King’s Bird and Xbox 360 backward compatible game NeoGeo Battle Coliseum on June 1. Fifteen days later, Shadows Awakening and the original Injustice on Xbox 360 cycle in for free download. Both sets of games are available for a limited time, with the Xbox One games lasting a full month and the Xbox 360 games available for fifteen days a pop.

On the Xbox One end, The King’s Bird is an aerial platformer from developer Serenity Forge and publisher Grafitti Games. Players catch currents and turn gracefully in the air as they complete obstacle courses with the same momentum-based gameplay as the best Sonic the Hedgehog titles. Later in the month, subscribers can check out Shadows: Awakening, an action RPG from Kalypso Media that got above-average reviews when it released in 2018. The Xbox 360 side of things is where most of the focus will be, as it features two notable fighting games. Everyone is familiar with Injustice, a DC Comics game with a great single-player story as crafted by the team behind Mortal Kombat. Less might be familiar with NeoGeo Battle Coliseum, a tag-team fighter pitting some of SNK’s best characters against one another for ultimate dominance.

While Injustice may be the only well-known game in this month’s Xbox Games with Gold selections, the quartet of free offerings can appeal to a wide variety of players. The Xbox One titles are both smaller games that many may have overlooked when they initially released years ago. NeoGeo Battle Coliseum is a fun lark for fans of King of Fighters, even if it is a lesser entry in the SNK canon. The inclusion of Injustice will please a lot of people, and it could even hint at upcoming news from NetherRealm about its next project. With June being the month of E3, perhaps there’s more to the game’s inclusion than first meets the eye.
