Xbox Promotes MLB The Show 21 With Incorrect Box Art

Microsoft has been mistakenly promoting MLB The Show 21 using box art from the wrong baseball game, although the Xbox advertisement has now been fixed to show the correct box art. The Xbox dashboard, which only received minor changes with the release of the Xbox Series X/S, often displays ads and promotions for upcoming titles. However, it’s unusual for there to be such a blatant error as this one.

MLB The Show 21 is the first time that the highly-acclaimed baseball sim has come to Xbox following months of rumors. The franchise has historically been a PlayStation exclusive, developed by the Sony-owned studio San Diego Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The upcoming entry is the first time in the 15 year history of the series that it has released on anything but a PlayStation console. The move comes after Sony’s 2019 announcement that it would be moving to support multiple platforms with the franchise in the future.

In an embarrassing mistake, Microsoft has been erroneously promoting MLB The Show 21 using the box art of another game. Reddit user DZack007 noticed the error on the Xbox dashboard, with the advertisement displaying promotional imagery from R.B.I. Baseball, a rival franchise to Sony’s MLB The Show. Only one of the two images shown in the promotion was from the wrong title, and Microsoft has now fixed the issue so that the correct box art is displayed. It seems like this was likely down to human error, especially given how quickly it went addressed.

Earlier this month, Sony revealed the cover athlete for MLB The Show 21, announcing that San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis, Jr. will feature on the cover. The game’s Collector’s Editions feature Jackie Robinson, and $1 from every purchase will go to the Jackie Robinson Foundation. The publisher also detailed that MLB The Show 21 will support cross-gen saves, along with crossplay between the PlayStation and Xbox family of consoles.

Considering that this is the first time that MLB The Show is making its way to Xbox consoles, this wasn’t a great first look by Microsoft on its newfound partnership with Sony (at least in the arena of sports games). However, the error was relatively harmless and fixed as soon as it was noticed, so it’s unlikely this will inspire any ire from Sony.
