Today, December 13, the official Xbox YouTube channel uploaded a six-part documentary that recounts the 20-year history of Xbox. Microsoft entered the gaming space a little over 20 years ago with the release of the original Xbox on November 15, 2001. The tech giant’s console proved transformative in myriad ways, chief among them being that it became the first gaming console to include a built-in ethernet port.

Xbox pushed the envelope in terms of software as well, specifically with regards to Halo, which hit store shelves the same day as the hardware. The Bungie-developed shooter marked the first step in showcasing the viability of first-person shooters on consoles and went on to inspire the creation of many other sci-fi FPS titles, PlayStation’s Killzone franchise included. Microsoft and Xbox have plenty to celebrate, then, and have taken every opportunity to do so throughout the year with 20th anniversary streams, digital content, and more. Now seems as good a time as any for the brand to unleash a documentary, too.

Nearly a month after the date of Xbox’s 20th anniversary, the brand’s YouTube page has unleashed a six-part documentary series that runs roughly four hours in length. Titled Power On: The Story of Xbox, the documentary recounts every major facet of the gaming division’s history, including the fact that Xbox almost didn’t come to fruition. Other significant events such as the Red Ring of Death on Xbox 360 receive a deep dive during the docu-series, as well. All six parts are currently available for public consumption, beginning with part one linked below – “Chapter 1: The Renegades.”

It’s neat to see that Xbox has reached an age in which its heritage can be celebrated much like that of Nintendo and PlayStation. And this year continues to prove that Microsoft and Co. will have much more to celebrate as time carries on.

Xbox’s 2021 got off to somewhat of a rocky start, though it quickly picked up steam in the back half, thanks in large part to stellar Xbox Game Pass offerings and the releases of Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite. The new Halo title especially garnered plenty of hype upon its early launch of the multiplayer suite, which arrived just in time for the franchise’s 20th anniversary. Xbox and developer 343 Industries deployed the single-player campaign as planned on December 8.
