Though Marvel Studios is often handed the credit for today’s surge of superhero movies, and especially the shared universe formula, Fox’s X-Men franchise had already wrapped their first trilogy before the MCU even began. Today their X-Men franchise continues — somewhat coherently, thanks to the timeline finagling in Days of Future Past — and is soon to be nine films strong with their latest installment, X-Men: Apocalypse.

In the months leading towards its release, Fox has been very forthcoming with X-Men: Apocalypse trailers, having already released several teasers, TV spots, and three full length trailers. The video above, however, is the first proper clip from the film. Though it is admittedly nothing more than an extended look at a scene shown in the trailers — one of Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne) debriefing Professor Xavior (James McAvoy) and Havok (Lucas Till) on the cult surrounding En Sabah Nur a.k.a Apocalypse — the clip does provide a little further explanation. Give it watch, above.

Along with the first clip from X-Men: Apocalypse, a new image (via Imgur) has surfaced which provides a clearer look as the costumes that will be worn by the new generation of X-Men. And no, not the bulky, black tactical gear the team was shown wearing in several posters and magazine covers. What it appears to be is a shot of the fully assembled team, possibly entering the X-Men’s infamous Danger Room. Take a look:

These are costumes — which can be glimpsed briefly in the more recent trailers and TV spots — that presumably come later in the film, probably after the team has suffered some setbacks and needs to regroup. They may even be the costumes the team appears in at the very end, when the day is saved and the film is teasing the X-Men’s next adventure, which may explain why they haven’t been featured more prominently in the film’s marketing. But what’s immediately noticeable about these costumes are two things: 1) they aren’t all identical, as the movie X-Men costumes have been in the past, though they are similar enough to evoke the look of a uniformed team, and 2) they include several nods to these characters’ best known comic book costumes, something that is certain to please many fans.

Nightcrawler has a red ‘V’ down his chest and white on his gloves and boots; Storm, though similar to her attire as one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen, is redesigned with a full body suit and cape; Cyclops is clearly channeling the look of Jim Lee’s famous design, with the chest straps and visor, which served as the inspiration for his look in the ’90s X-Men cartoon; Jean Grey, too, looks similar to her 90s-era self, with the protruding shoulders; and Quicksilver, though not sporting the lightning bolt from the comics, shares his classic blue and silver color scheme.

Even Mystique’s costume harkens back to her comic book costume, channeling some of Dave Cockrum’s design in the white chest and blue legs and arms. And when you notice McAvoy’s Xavier in the background, completely bald and looking every bit like Patrick Stewart’s version, then this image really begins selling the next generation of Fox’s X-Men series.

Speaking of Cyclops, actor Tye Sheridan recently spoke with EW, where he revealed he’s signed on for two more X-Men films — which is, frankly, not too surprising — and shared how silly he feels using his mutant powers on set. “Everyone else’s moves are kinda cool,” Sheridan explained, “and I just take off my glasses and stare at someone really intensely and growl.” Don’t worry Tye, if the trailers are anything to go by, Cyclops’s eye beams look really cool too once the visual effects are added.

However, Sheridan’s comment does seem to confirm that Cyclops won’t receive his visor until much later in the film. What do you think? Does X-Men: Apocalypse hold these comic book inspired costumes until the end? Or will we see the X-Men suit up in these outfits for their final battle against Apocalypse?
