During his debut in X-Men: Days of Future Past, actor Evan Peters arguably stole the entire movie in what’s now best known as “The Quicksilver Scene,” set to the tune of Jim Croce’s Time in a Bottle. Needless to say, one of the most anticipated moments in X-Men: Apocalypse was Quicksilver’s perfectly timed arrival at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.

With the film’s release and current domination of a quiet weekend box office, fans are beginning to get their first looks behind the scenes. Quicksilver’s big scene in Days of Future Past relied on highly advanced cameras, a treadmill, green screen technology, and stunt work for Peters and his double. But for the incredible scale of Quicksilver’s spotlighted rescue, the crew went above and beyond with special effects (both practical and digital), stunts, and a shiny new camera.

With the mansion beginning to implode, Quicksilver decides to save the day and (unlike his MCU counterpart; may he rest in peace) survives it with ease. Called “The Extraction” on set, the scene’s particular slow motion was filmed on a Phantom camera, which runs 3,000 frames per second — giving it the ability to freeze in real time. The camera moved at 90 miles per hour through in-house recreations of the mansion’s interior, as explosions rained down upon it. “Visual effects-wise, there’s just so many more elements,” explains Quicksilver stunt double Colin Follenweider. The large stunt crew rehearsed the scene for about a week, flinging themselves into the air and figuring out proper falls, before taking on the scene.

Before its release this past weekend, critics suggested X-Men: Apocalypse served as “a reminder that the franchise is tiring.” Whether or not that’s true for moviegoers is a matter of perspective, but Quicksilver may be earning his place as one of the most well-liked characters on Fox’s superhero lineup, delivering wit and sly humor with perfect timing no matter where he is. “We all fell in love with Quicksilver in the last film,” said producer Hutch Parker. “We wanted to find a unique and interesting way to take his powers further.”

The scene-stealing Quicksilver was given a little bit more screen time in Apocalypse, hashing out his backstory and confirming that Magneto (Michael Fassbender) is his father and fighting alongside the X-Men in the film. This is Evan Peters’ second turn as the silver-clad speedster under the direction of Bryan Singer, and with any luck, it won’t be the last.

X-Men: Apocalypse is now playing in theaters. Wolverine 3 opens in U.S. theaters on March 3rd, 2017, followed by unannounced X-Men films on October 6th, 2017 (possibly Gambit), January 12th, 2018 (possibly Deadpool 2), and July 13th, 2018 (possibly New Mutants). X-Force is also in development.
