XMen Comics Are Finally Remembering Professor Xs Replacement

Marvel’s X-Men comics are finally remembering Hope Summers, the so-called “Mutant Messiah” – and potentially the best replacement for Professor X. It’s easy to forget that Hope Summers was originally portrayed as one of the most important mutants of all time. She was the first new mutant born after Scarlet Witch used her powers to decimate the mutant race in House of M, and unlike most mutants her powers manifested at birth. Time travelers like Nimrod and scientists such as Mr. Sinister knew she was the spark with the potential to reignite the mutant race, and in the end Cable had to take Hope into the future to bring her up safely.

Hope Summers returned as a teenager, now possessing the power to mimic and synergize the abilities of others, and with a mysterious tie to the Phoenix Force. She became known as the “Mutant Messiah,” the last hope of the mutant race, and ultimately her powers combined with those of the Scarlet Witch to restore mutants across the globe. Unfortunately Marvel had only planned that far with the character, and Hope lacked a consistent role in the X-Men books once mutants had been restored. It wasn’t until 2019 that Jonathan Hickman found a role for Hope Summers once again, making her the key to the X-Men’s Resurrection Protocols.

Hickman is moving on, and Marvel is teasing the next wave of X-Men books – apparently called Destiny of X. Most of the teasers have focused on major established X-Men such as Storm and Magneto, but Hope Summers has received one of her own, setting the “mutant Messiah” up as a potential successor to Charles Xavier himself. One of the possible futures shown in the images sees her clad in a black bodysuit and wearing Xavier’s latest Cerebro unit.

The mysterious Destiny of X appears to be an opportunity to explore multiple future timelines, and it’s exciting to see Hope Summers apparently at the center of them. The first image shows Hope fulfilling her destiny as the “mutant Messiah,” replacing Xavier as the mutant race’s greatest leader; there have already been hints Hope is headed in that direction, because she’s recently been given a Cerebro unit and begun to operate independently, taking control of the Resurrection Protocols. The second is a nod to a dystopian future Bishop feared, where Hope triggered the so-called “Two-Minute War” between humanity and mutantkind, with Hope becoming a freedom fighter; curiously, the image represents her as Cable’s true successor, right down to a techno-organic (or possibly cyborg) arm. The third is less extreme, simply suggesting she’ll wind up on Krakoa’s Quiet Council – and objecting to the direction things are taking.

It’s impossible to say which (if any) of these timelines the X-Men books will ultimately follow and whether she will step into the role held by Professor X. Whatever Marvel chooses, though, it’s great to see it has a role for Hope Summers once again – the “mutant Messiah” who has the potential to save the mutant race or destroy it. This teaser image suggests that, whatever choices Hope Summers makes going forward, they will shape the future of the X-Men.
