XMen’s Cannonball Once Destroyed Marvel’s Superman

With the launch of the new age X-Men team the New Mutants came a mutant with the power to redirect kinetic energy into powerful blasts, and that mutant took out Marvel’s version of Superman. Over time, the mutant named Cannonball graduated from the New Mutants team and joined up with the Cable-founded X-Force then made another switch to becoming a full-fledged member of the X-Men. During his initial stint with the X-Men, Cannonball tangled with the hero Gladiator and destroyed him.

In Uncanny X-Men #341 by Scott Lobdell and Joe Madureira, Cannonball and other members of the X-Men are enjoying a quiet winter night in New York celebrating Christmas. In the middle of the festivities, the Shi’ar warrior Gladiator crash lands on Earth, and Cannonball rushes to the scene of impact. Gladiator grabs Cannonball aggressively, saying he needs to speak with the X-Men, but Cannonball instead reacts to Gladiator’s threatening gesture, sparking an all-out brawl between them.

At first, Gladiator is pummeling Cannonball while Sam’s best maneuver is to simply evade the Shi’ar warrior. Gladiator’s powers are much like Superman including super-strength, flight, and even heat vision. In fact, Gladiator is almost a replica of Superman aside from one thing, his weakness. Gladiator’s powers are fueled by his confidence, the more confident he is the more powerful he will become, but the opposite is also true. Once Gladiator starts to lose confidence in his abilities, his powers diminish, which is what Cannonball is eventually able to take advantage of.

As Gladiator is gearing up to land the final blow on Cannonball, Sam is able to kick his powers into high gear. Cannonball absorbs Gladiator’s most powerful punch by redirecting his kinetic energy and using it to create a massive blast. Seeing that his most powerful attack had no impact on the X-Men member, Gladiator loses focus and more debilitatingly loses confidence in himself. Cannonball uses that opportunity to demolish Gladiator, slamming him into the ground with a massively powerful strike, and ending the fight right then and there.

Up until that point in Marvel Comics, Cannonball had never gotten a major spotlight for how powerful he truly is. Sam was always a major asset to whichever X-Team he was a part of, but never really stood out on his own. After his tangle with Gladiator, Cannonball proved the massive extent of his power and quickly became a stand-out member of the X-Men in the eyes of fans, unable to believe that the kid from New Mutants was able to take down one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe. X-Men’s Cannonball once destroyed Marvel’s Superman which stands as one of the most epic moments in X-Men comic history.
