Before Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury got attacked by a Flerken, his character in the xXx franchise suffered his own facially scarring experience. Over the course of his long career, Jackson has become one of the go-to actors in Hollywood when it comes to playing intimidating authority figures. Blessed with a deep, distinctive voice, a withering glare, and a way with profanity that’s second to none, Jackson is a reliably entertaining presence in whatever he does, even if the rest of the movie isn’t great.
At this point, Nick Fury in the MCU might be Jackson’s signature role, surpassing even that of Jules Winfield in Pulp Fiction or Mace Windu from the Star Wars prequels. A few years before Fury appeared inside Tony Stark’s house to discuss the Avengers Initiative in Iron Man, Jackson began his tenure as another franchise staple, albeit one not quite on the MCU’s gargantuan level of popularity. In 2002’s xXx, Jackson played NSA big-shot Augustus Gibbons, the man responsible for recruiting people like Xander Cage or Darius Stone for the titular spy program.
By the time xXx begins, Gibbons is mostly retired from front-line missions, having served as a Navy SEAL prior to his current leadership role. When Jackson’s Gibbons is first seen in xXx, there’s noticeable scarring on the left side of his face. That film wouldn’t reveal the origin of the scars, but luckily for curious viewers 2005 sequel xXx: State of the Union would, and it tied into Gibbons’ past in the SEALs.
xXx: Augustus Gibbons’ Facial Scars Tie Back To His Military Past
After the apparent death of Vin Diesel’s Xander Cage – which would later be retconned when Diesel decided to return for xXx 3 – Gibbons enlists Darius Stone (Ice Cube) to be the newest xXx operative. To do this, he springs Stone from prison, because he knows Stone doesn’t really deserve to be there. Stone was locked up after punching out and leading a partial mutiny against his former military superior, General George Deckert (Willem Dafoe) after he ordered Stone’s SEAL team to burn down a building full of civilians.
Leading the team at the time was none other than Gibbons, who ended up running inside the burning building after Deckert ordered it set ablaze, in an attempt to save any lives he could. Stone was sent to prison for his efforts, while Gibbons ended up with the scarring he carries on his face. By the time xXx 2 takes place, Deckert has risen to U.S. Secretary of Defense, and Samuel L. Jackson’s Gibbons wants Stone’s help to prevent Deckert’s planned coup attempt against the president. Thankfully, the two men succeed in taking the general down.
Gibbons’ overall backstory is still fairly mysterious, as outside of his specific past with Stone, his military career and personal life are still question marks. Still, as deceptive as he can be in the xXx movies – which makes sense in his line of work – Gibbons is clearly a decent man, or he wouldn’t have risked his own life to try and save strangers from burning to death. Oddly, Gibbons’ facial scars look to have nearly disappeared by the time xXx: Return of Xander Cage arrived.
