Yelena Hints At Dark Avengers Theory (Not Thunderbolts)

Warning: SPOILERS for Hawkeye Episode 4 – “Partners, Am I Right?”

Yelena Belova’s (Florence Pugh) long-awaited appearance in Hawkeye supports the theory that the team Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss) is assembling will be the Dark Avengers and not the Thunderbolts. In Black Widow’s post-credits scene, Val tasked Yelena with killing Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), who she blamed for the death of Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson). But the way Barton identified Yelena during their rooftop confrontation in Hawkeye episode 4 hints at the true nature and possible name of Valetina’s burgeoning super team.

Valentina debuted in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier when she recruited John Walker (Wyatt Russell) after he was relieved of his duties as Captain America. But by then, Walker was enhanced by the Super Soldier Serum and de Fontaine seized upon John’s desire to redeem himself. Val gave Walker a new identity as the U.S. Agent when the super soldier signed onto her cause. Black Widow then revealed that Yelena Belova was already in league with Val, who is backed by a powerful secret organization that is clearly forming an Avengers-like team of its own. Comics readers see Val’s recruiting as an obvious setup for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of the Thunderbolts, but given who de Fontaine is hiring, there’s also the strong possibility Val’s team will actually be the Dark Avengers instead.

In Hawkeye episode 4, Clint identified Yelena as a “Black Widow assassin” to Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld). This signals that Valentina is, indeed, recruiting superheroes who are essentially replacement Avengers and, in effect, Dark Avengers. U.S. Agent is obviously a stand-in for Captain America (Chris Evans) and Yelena is a former Black Widow who was the ‘little sister’ of the late Natasha Romanoff. If this is the case, then when Val’s lineup is finally complete, her super team may adopt the name “Avengers” or some variation of it, especially if “Dark Avengers” turns out to be bad branding. In Hawkeye, Kate teases Clint about his poor branding as Hawkeye. In the case of Valentina’s forthcoming superteam, it’s undeniable that the name “Avengers” has much more public sentiment behind it than “Thunderbolts,” which doesn’t have any connotation in the MCU.

The Avengers were always popular with the public and the world especially owes Earth’s Mightiest Heroes an unpayable debt after they defeated Thanos (Josh Brolin) and resurrected half of all life in the universe. But whether or not the Avengers are still a team, or even who owns the name and trademarks now that Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is dead, are some of MCU Phase 4’s biggest unanswered questions. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showed how the US government owns “Captain America” and quickly moved to replace Steve Rogers. It’s possible that the secret organization Valentina represents is moving behind the scenes to acquire the “Avengers” name for their new superteam instead of christening them the Thunderbolts.

With John Walker and Yelena Belova as a replacement Captain America and Black Widow already signed on, Val could be looking at acquiring Kate Bishop as her team’s resident Hawkeye. This would leave finding an Iron Man, which could be Riri Williams AKA Ironheart (Dominique Thorne) instead of James Rhodes (Don Cheadle). Further, She-Hulk (Tatiana Maslany) could be the Hulk substitute Val goes after, while Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) or Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) could be Val’s replacement for Thor (Chris Hemsworth). If this theoretical team were to be assembled in Phase 4, it makes more branding sense in the MCU for Valentina de Fontaine to call them the Avengers instead of the Thunderbolts, although they may prove to be the Dark Avengers regardless of their name.
