Warning: contains spoilers for Yomi no Tsugai chapter 1!

The new manga series from Fullmetal Alchemist creator Hiromu Arakawa, Yomi no Tsugai, begins its serialization in the latest issue of Square Enix’s Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine, and it’s easy to feel the echoes of her prior work reverberating within.

Yomi no Tsugai (roughly translated, The Hinge of the Underworld) represents Arakawa’s first return to action since Fullmetal Alchemist, although she most recently worked on the slice-of-life series Silver Spoon. The series was announced several months ago, revealing only the appearance of the main character and its debut date. Monthly Shonen Gangan was also home to Fullmetal Alchemist during its run, so the debut of this new series represents something of a homecoming for Arakawa as she returns to the genre she’s most famous for.

The story follows a young boy named Yuru (which may be romanized differently in official translations), the character first revealed who bears a strong resemblance to Fullmetal Alchemist’s Riza Hawkeye. Yuru has a twin sister, Asa, who’s being held in a dungeon due to a superstitious belief that the pair are bad luck because one was born during the day and the other at night. The series opens in a rural mountain village where Yuru lives with his grandmother Yamaha, hunting with a bow and farming. Everything’s pretty normal, until the village is suddenly attacked by modern-day soldiers with guns and helicopters. Among the attackers is a young woman who claims that she’s the real Asa, but Yuru is snatched away to protect him before they can work out what’s going on.

This first chapter relies heavily upon this twist, but as it happens right off the bat, it’s difficult to discuss the series at all without mentioning it. It seems that Yuru’s village exists in the mountains in the modern day, and that it was hidden by some kind of protection spell which prevented those beyond it from being able to locate the village. In addition to modern weaponry, a handful of the attackers are also using a type of supernatural power referred to as “Tsugai,” giving the title a double meaning that’s difficult to accurately translate. These demon-style beings seem to be bonded to particular users and have different powers, although how they correlate to the master’s talents isn’t yet clear. The “new” Asa wields one, as does a girl who vaguely resembles Edward Elric named Gabu, and the chapter ends with Yuru manifesting not one, but two of these Tsugai. The attackers seem to be searching for Yuru, likely at “Asa’s” behest, but no reason is given as to why.

There are definitely some strong recurring themes from Arakawa’s previous work here: the story centers on a pair of orphaned siblings, one of whom has a very different body than expected. While the story is unambiguously fantasy, the world still has conventional technologies such as guns, like that of Fullmetal Alchemist. The first chapter has also drawn comparisons to Demon Slayer, since it centers on a brother and sister who live in an isolated rural village that seems to be far behind the outside world in terms of technology. It also utilizes an Asian-influenced setting more like that of Demon Slayer than the vaguely European vibe of Fullmetal Alchemist’s Amestris. The story certainly has an intriguing opening, although there’s much left that needs to be explained before any real conclusions of its quality can be drawn.

No official English translation of Yomi no Tsugai have been announced, but given the popularity of Arakawa’s previous work, it seems inevitable that it will be picked up sooner or later. With a promising start for fans of Fullmetal Alchemist, the story of Yomi no Tsugai will continue in next month’s issue of Shonen Gangan.
