You Can Now Buy A CopyPaste Keyboard For Some Reason

Earlier this year, popular community coding platform Stack Overflow advertised a fake copy-paste keyboard that users can now actually purchase. Called “The Key,” the keyboard was initially introduced as an April Fool’s prank. With only three keys – CTRL, C, and V – this tiny keyboard was meant to poke fun at how frequently code is copy-pasted from the website.

On April 1, anyone who copied code off Stack Overflow was greeted with a pop-up that told them they had a limited number of free copies left and that they could have infinite copies if they purchased The Key. While this was, of course, untrue and Stack Overflow remains a free-to-use community, it did allow its developers to see how many times content was copied, from where, and how quickly. They found the community’s running copy-paste joke was completely accurate, as a quarter of Stack Overflow’s 15 million users copied something within five minutes of visiting the site.

In response to more and more people asking where they could get one of the keyboards for real, Stack Overflow connected with Drop, a site that can best be described as an online designer tech shop. One of Drop’s designers brought the idea of The Key to reality and, on September 28, a limited number of copies went up for sale. These sold out almost immediately, so new copies are currently up for pre-order and expected to ship by December 13 — just in time to make the Christmas present pile for coding friends.

The Stack Overflow team has shared that their portion of the proceeds, along with five percent of Drop’s portion, would be donated to digitalundivided. This non-profit supports Black and Latinx women entrepreneurs by connecting their communities with the resources they need to thrive in innovation and technology. So, for $29, anyone can now own a three-key programmable keyboard and contribute to both a silly joke and a worthy cause.

Considering the data Stack Overflow collected from the monitored time period of March 26 to April 9, it’s not surprising The Key has sold out already. The number of CTRL+Cs picked up by the system added up to 40,623,987 copies across 7,305,042 posts and comments. People were ten times more likely to copy from an answer than a question and were more likely to copy from a question if it didn’t have an accepted answer than if it did. Comments were less popular to copy from and so was any text that wasn’t code. Stack Overflow decided to openly show off these numbers in order to encourage people to reuse solutions others had already found and to reassure all their users that there’s no need to feel guilty about not writing everything from scratch. Though it may not be for everyone, The Key certainly continues that idea.
