Young Rock Season 2 Will Reportedly Add Even More Classic WWE Characters

Young Rock season 2 will include even more classic WWE superstars and on-air personalities. The sitcom, co-created by Dwayne Johnson and Nahnatchka Khan, premiered on NBC in February. It focuses on different periods in the former wrestler and current Hollywood star’s life. From growing up around professional wrestlers, to his struggles in high school and playing football at the University of Miami, the series unfolds in different timelines to show key moments that would help shape Johnson into the man he’d eventually become. In order to tell these three different storylines, Young Rock features a trio of actors that take turns playing the lead role. A 10 year-old Johnson is played by Adrian Groulx, and then Bradley Constant portrays the actor from 15 years old, before Uli Latukefu takes over for Johnson’s college years.

The real Dwayne Johnson has a part in the series, too. He narrates the episodes and appears as himself in an arc that sees the famous actor running for the presidency in 2032. However, the show has also expanded its focus to the other figures in Johnson’s life, shedding light on his father Rocky (Joseph Lee Anderson), his mother Ata (Stacey Leilua), and his grandmother Lia Maivia (Ana Tuisila). The show has also developed a penchant for featuring appearances from iconic WWE wrestlers.

According to PWInsider, these WWE characters will continue to pop up in Young Rock season 2. Filming for the next installment of the NBC comedy is expected to begin next month, and casting is currently underway for actors to portray a number of professional wrestlers from the 1980s. Most notably, the wrestlers and commentators set to feature include a recast Roddy Piper, Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler, and Gene Okerlund. Other names mentioned are Big John Studd, Freddie Blassie, Haystacks Calhoun, The Great Kabuki, Tommy Rich, and a young Bam Bam Bigelow.

It was previously reported that Matt Willig, who plays the legendary Andre the Giant, had been upped from a recurring character to a main cast member for Young Rock season 2. The sitcom spent some time delving into the unlikely friendship between the friendly giant and the 10-year-old Johnson, which will likely continue when the show returns. Other wrestlers were played by actors who showed up in mostly minor supporting roles, though they included the likes of iconic wrestling figures Randy Savage, Junkyard Dog, Iron Sheik, and Vince McMahon.

Johnson himself has previously indicated that if Young Rock continues for long enough, the series could very well examine his time as a WWE superstar. That could potentially mean appearances by more recent wrestling icons like Steve Austin, Mick Foley, Triple H, Trish Stratus, and Chris Jericho, given how closely Rock worked with each. At least for now, it’s clear that the hit NBC show plans to continue its emphasis on the importance of WWE in Johnson’s early life, and how it contributed to forming the action hero superstar he is today.
