After the remarkable success of The Big Bang Theory, the CBS spin-off Young Sheldon offered many of its fans an alternative way to enjoy the wits of one of their favorite sitcom characters – the brilliantly quirky Sheldon Cooper. 10 The Show Was Only Created For Money

This point of view is represented through u/apple kicks who thinks that CBS created Young Sheldon only to make money. As the user explains: “studio logic: This show is popular and is making us money! Let’s take one of the characters for a spin-off and double our money.”

Nevertheless, it seems there’s much more to it. As the show’s co-creator Chuck Lorre told TVLine when asked about giving up on the second TBBT spin-off: “This is hard work. And if you’re going to do it, you gotta love what you’re doing; you’ve gotta be passionate about it. And if you’re just chasing money, that’s not enough.”

9 It’s Really Funny

Compared to TBBT, it is quite surprising that a show, which doesn’t look very quirky as its sequel, can be considered more amusing. Yet, for numerous people, Young Sheldon has a perfect recipe for a comedy series. For example, it doesn’t use annoying laugh tracks, jokes are funny, and (most importantly), they are “understandable by an average mind.” Similar to that, u/WyldStallions claims: “I can’t remember the last time TBBT made me laugh or be excited or just happy about the show. But Young Sheldon has me doing all those things, the humor is so great…”

8 The Characterisation Is Butchered

Reddit user OG2tonne commented on how the show “butchered the characterization” of Sheldon’s parents “trying to make them 3-dimensional without any real effort.”

However, the majority of Young Sheldon’s fans would surely claim the show is great writing skills and has good character growth. Just like u/fm22fnam, who says: “The characters not only meld perfectly with their future selves on TBBT but also bring new depth to them we haven’t seen before.”

7 The Acting Is Terrible

Redditor Eamk claims: “I watched a little of the first episode and the acting was so bad I just stopped watching. The guy who played young Sheldon was especially bad.” However, many wouldn’t agree with that.

Most of Reddit comments on Young Sheldon’s fantastic cast mention wonderful chemistry between the members of the Cooper family. On top of that, u/OG2tonne posted how the “kid who plays Sheldon is pretty spot on and does a good job for his age.”

6 Paige Is Far More Interesting Than Sheldon

Young Sheldon’s frenemy, Paige Swanson (portrayed by McKenna Grace), is introduced in season 2 as another child prodigy in the show. According to Reddit user MaharashiMad, this rebellious genius (who is negatively affected by her parents’ divorce) is a more compelling character than Sheldon, stating how they “want[ed] her to be main character and have her story, character development etc. instead of Sheldon.”

But, comments go even further. For instance, MyriVerse posted that “every single character in Young Sheldon is more interesting than Sheldon.” This would mean that even the love triangle Meemaw has been involved in are more exciting to watch.

5 Young Sheldon Is Better Than TBBT Sheldon

For a number of Redditors, young Sheldon is a more interesting and lovable protagonist than his self-centered grown-up version. For example, user jimmyolsenblues says: “There is no possible way in any universe that Young Sheldon grows up to be the selfish piece of cr*p on TBBT.”

u/Laxberry also praises the young child, claiming how “he is a typical precocious kid. He doesn’t really resemble his annoying, cocky, insufferable adult self. The show is less so about him, and more about the entire family as a whole.” There will definitely be a Big Bang fan who will disagree on this.

4 Sheldon’s Character Can’t Grow Because Of TBBT

Reddit user skribsbb posted that Sheldon “doesn’t have much opportunity for character growth, because he was basically a giant man-child at the start of TBBT.” This might be true in comparison to the rest of his family members who didn’t appear much on The Big Bang Theory.

Surely, the show has a lot more space to develop their characters in more detail since, as u/Kayv explained: “Young Sheldon is more a show about his family growing around Sheldon than a show about Sheldon himself.” Still, in contrast to his adult version, it’s a bit excessive to say that a 9-year-old Sheldon is the same person as in TBBT.

3 It Should Include All TBBT Main Characters

According to one user, Young Sheldon should have been about The Big Bang Theory’s famous gang. To be precise, u/abhijeetsskamble shared on Reddit: “The only thing I could think of while watching the show was – this could have been way better with all of them – Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, and Raj.”

While that sounds like a fun idea, it would certainly be hard to realize. As really_thirsty_lemon put it: “Given that the TBBT characters lived in different states and another country as kids, uniting them into a series would be difficult.”

2 It’s Not That Great

To be honest, it’s impossible to ignore Redditors who don’t prefer Young Sheldon to The Big Bang Theory. Moreover, they think it’s not entertaining enough to be worth their time.

For example, a Reddit user (whose name has since been deleted) commented: “Young Sheldon isn’t really laugh-out-loud funny,” while u/grumpyhipster believes that the cast of TBBT “had so much chemistry” and that its prequel looks “like a children’s show.”

On the other hand, it seems like there are a number of Reddit users who find the show worth watching and want to highlight how great Young Sheldon actually is compared to The Big Bang Theory. Besides good writing, acting, humor, and the supporting cast, many fans prefer the Cooper family over the TBBT gang – just like u/fm22fnam who claims: “I love this show so much more than TBBT now. I still watch it since it’s the final season, but Young Sheldon has definitely become my favorite comedy.” It seems that no matter what, there will always be a divide between the two fandoms.
