Young Sheldon Mocks Big Bang Theory Sheldon’s Accomplishments

Adult Sheldon’s (Jim Parsons) accomplishments in The Big Bang Theory have just been mocked in Young Sheldon season 5. In an effort to capitalize on the geek-centric sitcom’s popularity, the TBBT spin-off series debuted in 2017. But instead of being a complementary show to The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon typically contradicts its parent show, and sometimes, it even insults it.

The first two episodes of Young Sheldon season 5 mainly revolved around George Cooper (Lance Barber) and Brenda Sparks’ (Melissa Peterman) budding relationship. This could be the prequel’s attempt to set up the fruition of Sheldon’s heartbreaking story of catching his dad having an affair in The Big Bang Theory. Surprisingly, however, the offshoot shifted its storytelling focus in Young Sheldon season 5, episode 3 titled “Potential Energy and Hooch on a Park Bench,” which tackled Georgie’s (Montana Jordan) decision to drop out of school and start working full-time instead. Expectedly, this caused a commotion in the Cooper household, with both of his parents opposed to the idea.

As the family discussed the matter during dinner, George and Mary (Zoe Perry) disagree on how to handle the situation. The former wanted to kick out their firstborn to prove a point about how important his education is. Meanwhile, the latter wanted a more diplomatic approach. As the couple argued about the matter, Sheldon (Iain Armitage) butted in and suggested they simply “love and nurture that one child you have who’s destined for success,” referring to himself. Knowing how Sheldon’s life pans out in The Big Bang Theory, it sounds as if his younger self correctly predicted his future. But considering the fact that Georgie ultimately succeeds in his own right as well, this comment from Sheldon suddenly sounds like a backhanded compliment to himself.

As revealed in The Big Bang Theory season 11, Georgie goes out to become a great businessman. He founded a chain of stores called Dr. Tire which is the most successful tire franchise in Texas. Granted that it’s not as world-renowned and prestigious compared to winning the Nobel Prize in Physics as Sheldon did, the fact of the matter is, Georgie still succeeded in his own endeavor. What makes this more impressive is that he’s not as intellectually gifted as his younger brother and is often met with criticism in the Cooper household. He had to work much harder to beat all the odds and prove naysayers wrong — including his own family. Sheldon, on the other hand, being “destined for success” makes it sound as if he was always going to be successful regardless of the circumstances. Somehow, it takes away from all the hard work the theoretical physicist put into not just working on Super Asymmetry, but in his field, in general.

Between his quirks and smarts, Sheldon often gets special treatment at home. This makes his siblings feel neglected at times. In one of the most subtly heartbreaking scenes in Young Sheldon, Georgie and Missy (Raegan Revord) talk about not being as intellectually gifted as their brother. Despite that, their respective appearances in The Big Bang Theory proved that their lives turned out just fine, as well. Missy may be separated, but at least, she’s handling it well. Meanwhile, Georgie continues to run his profitable tire business.
