Before Judd Apatow made improv-heavy R-rated comedies the norm with The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Todd Phillips made them viable box office hits with his $400 million-grossing blockbuster The Hangover, Phillips teamed up with the well-matched “Frat Pack” trio Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell, and Vince Vaughn for Old School, an underrated gem about grown men hanging out at a frat.

Phillips has since become an Oscar-nominated filmmaker, thanks to his work on DC’s Joker with Joaquin Phoenix, but before he went all serious, he made a handful of great comedies. There are some fascinating stories from the making of Old School.

10 The Idea Came From A Passing Comment By Todd Phillips’ Friend

Youre My Boy Blue! 10 BehindTheScenes Facts About Old School

The initial idea for Old School came when Todd Phillips was talking to a friend who’d seen his movie Frat House and enjoyed it. This friend said in passing that it might be funny to do a movie about older guys starting their own fraternity.

Phillips loved the idea and told his friend to write it. His friend came back with a very loose version of what would become the script for Old School.

9 The Studio Didn’t Think Vince Vaughn Could Do Comedy

Youre My Boy Blue! 10 BehindTheScenes Facts About Old School

When Old School went into development, Vince Vaughn was primarily known as a dramatic actor, due to his work on movies like The Lost World: Jurassic Park and the totally unnecessary shot-for-shot remake of Psycho in color.

According to Vaughn, the studio wanted to veto his casting because they didn’t believe he could do comedy. Obviously, his performance in Old School and many subsequent comedies would prove them wrong.

8 Will Ferrell Got Drunk Before Shooting The Streaking Scene

Will Ferrell was actually naked for Frank’s streaking scene. He was intimidated by Snoop Dogg’s presence on the set and could tell that the crew hadn’t told anyone in the nearby storefronts what was going on, so he had a few drinks — or, as he called it, “liquid courage” — to get through the shoot.

One of the storefronts was a 24-hour gym and Ferrell could hear screams from the people working out in the window when he dropped his robe to begin filming. After the first take, they’d all left the window.

7 Snoop Dogg Was Bribed Into His Cameo With The Role Of Huggy Bear In Starsky & Hutch

Todd Phillips really wanted Snoop Dogg to make a cameo appearance in Old School, but the iconic rapper was reluctant. Phillips knew that Snoop Dogg was dying to play Huggy Bear in his then-upcoming film adaptation of Starsky & Hutch, so he used the part to bribe him into appearing in Old School.

The director tagged the cameo offer for Old School onto the offer to play Huggy Bear, which made Snoop Dogg feel obligated to do it.

6 Luke Wilson Nailed Some Of His Scenes In Just One Take

Luke Wilson earned the nickname “One-Take Wilson” among the crew of Old School, because he nailed a lot of his scenes — including when he arrives home in the opening sequence – in a single take.

One night, when Snoop Dogg was on the set, he invited Vince Vaughn and a few others to hang out in his trailer. Later that night, Vaughn saw Luke Wilson watching the news alone in his trailer and realized he hadn’t been invited.

Todd Phillips and Scot Armstrong worked on the script for Old School every day for two months, writing and rewriting, at the home of executive producer Ivan Reitman.

Reitman is mostly known for directing some of the funniest movies of all time, like Ghostbusters and Stripes. Phillips compared the experience to a boot camp for comedy writing.

4 Vince Vaughn And Will Ferrell Worked Out Their Characters’ Backstories To Help With Improv

Before shooting, Vince Vaughn and Will Ferrell got together to work out the backstories of their characters, like how they knew each other, to help them with improv.

Vaughn ad-libbed a few of his best-known scenes, like the earmuff scene with the kids, and credits figuring out his character’s backstory with making it easier to think off the cuff.

3 Mitch-A-Palooza Was The Final Scene To Be Shot

Youre My Boy Blue! 10 BehindTheScenes Facts About Old School

The Mitch-A-Palooza set piece was the final scene of Old School to be shot. There was a crowd of around 300 extras that got rowdy as the shoot went on. Vince Vaughn had to keep the crowd of extras entertained for over an hour to keep things under control.

2 The Cast Dubbed Themselves “The Wolfpack” Years Before Todd Phillips Made The Hangover

Youre My Boy Blue! 10 BehindTheScenes Facts About Old School

Years before Todd Phillips would make The Hangover trilogy, centered around a quartet of dudes who call themselves “The Wolfpack,” the cast of Old School applied that nickname to themselves.

This is because they ruthlessly made fun of each other during shooting, like Will Ferrell calling Luke Wilson’s movie Legally Blonde “Legally Bland” and Wilson making fun of Ferrell’s TV career.

1 There Was A Cancelled Sequel Called Old School Dos

There was once a sequel to Old School in development called Old School Dos. A script was written in which the characters went on spring break with some college kids.

However, after reading the script, Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn both felt that it didn’t break any new ground and just repeated the jokes from the first one, so they decided not to do it.
