Ed Sheeran decided to embrace his leading man status in the music video for “Thinking Out Loud,” performing a contemporary dance choreography (that was shot continuously) alongside Brittany Cherry from the So You Think You Can Dance series. Released in October of 2014, the “Thinking Out Loud” video not only legitimized Sheeran’s status as a popstar, but it also turned this single into one of his biggest hits ever.
With an astounding 2.87 billion views, Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” is one of the most-watched music videos of all time on YouTube. What’s more, this isn’t Sheeran’s only video on the list, which means that “Thinking Out Loud” was just the beginning for the singer.
9 ONEREPUBLIC – “COUNTING STARS” (2.89 BILLION VIEWS)
By the time that the music video for “Counting Stars” was released in May of 2013, OneRepublic was already a pretty successful band that toured around the nation with a solid catalog. However, there is no doubt that the 2.89 billion views on the “Counting Stars” video propelled the band to brand-new heights.
Shot in New Orleans, Louisiana, “Counting Stars” became the first-ever music video from a band to surpass the one-billion mark of views on YouTube. The song also had a very strong commercial performance and spent several weeks on the Billboard Hot 100’s top ten, but it ultimately peaked at #2 (losing to Pitbull and Kesha’s “Timber”).
8 KATY PERRY – “ROAR” (2.98 BILLION VIEWS)
It was 2013, and Katy Perry was feeling the weight of having to live up to her previous album, Teenage Dream, that accumulated six number-one singles. For Prism, Perry released “Roar” as the first single. On September 5, 2013, the music video that accompanied the song came out and made a huge splash on popular culture.
The synopsis of the “Roar” music video is simple: Katy Perry and her boyfriend get stuck in a jungle. After a few days there, the popstar has fully embraced her place alongside animals, becoming one with the jungle. Over time, the music video has accumulated 2.98 billion views, ever so close to surpassing the 3-billion mark on YouTube.
7 MAROON 5 – “SUGAR” (3.10 BILLION VIEWS)
Maroon 5 is one of the most popular and successful bands in the world, not only due to its catchy and radio-friendly singles, but also because lead vocalist Adam Levine has achieved mainstream celebrity status as a judge on The Voice. However, when it comes to YouTube, it really doesn’t get any bigger for Maroon 5 than “Sugar.”
Directed by David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers), the video for “Sugar” premiered in January of 2015. To date, Maroon 5’s “Sugar” music video has garnered 3.10 billion views. This is the most watched music video in history by a band, crashing the previous record set by OneRepublic’s “Counting Stars.”
6 JUSTIN BIEBER – “SORRY” (3.23 BILLION VIEWS)
The “Sorry” music video is perhaps the most interesting entry of this list, as the video does not actually feature Justin Bieber and has probably the lowest budget of all the videos here. In fact, what turned out to be the official music video for “Sorry” was originally released as more of a ‘choreography video’ for the song, which many artists have done in the past. However, this one worked so well that it was eventually hailed as the official music video for the song.
With 3.23 billion views to date, Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” music video features the dance crews known as ReQuest Dance Crew and The Royal Family. Historically, “Sorry” is known as the fifth fastest video ever to reach 1 billion views on YouTube.
5 PSY – “GANGNAM STYLE” (3.48 BILLION VIEWS)
By 2012, Psy had a pretty established career in South Korea as a singer. However, he decided to turn things up a notch that year, investing in a comedy-heavy style of k-pop. In July of 2012, the music video for “Gangnam Style” was released – propelling Psy to international success.
Conceptually, “Gangnam Style” shows Psy poking fun at the fancy Gangnam-gu neighborhood in Seoul, where residents are supposed to have a lavish lifestyle. To date, Psy’s “Gangnam Style” video has 3.48 billion views.
4 MARK RONSON FEAT. BRUNO MARS – “UPTOWN FUNK” (3.75 BILLION VIEWS)
Unless you lived under a rock, you were singing and dancing along to “Uptown Funk” when it was released in November of 2014 (and kept being a hit well into 2015). The song was produced by Mark Ronson for his fourth album, Uptown Special, and featured vocals from none other than Bruno Mars.
The “Uptown Funk” video was filmed at the 20th Century Fox backlot studios in Los Angeles and featured Mark Ronson, Bruno Mars, and their friends spotting retro looks and dancing in front of a city backdrop with New York energy. With 3.75 billion views, the “Uptown Funk” music video is one of the most-watched YouTube videos of all time.
3 WIZ KHALIFA FEAT. CHARLIE PUTH – “SEE YOU AGAIN” (4.34 BILLION VIEWS)
Released in March of 2015, “See You Again” was written by rapper Wiz Khalifa and pop singer Charlie Puth as a tribute to actor Paul Walker from the Fast and Furious franchise. The song was commissioned by the team behind Furious 7, and used for the last scenes with Brian O’Conner (Walker’s character) in the film.
The music video for “See You Again” shows Charlie Puth playing the piano and Wiz Khalifa rapping his verses in front of a beautiful sunset. In the video, we also see several scenes of Paul Walker acting in the Fast and Furious movies. All in all, it comes as no surprise that this beautiful and catchy song – accompanied by the sadness of losing Paul Walker – garnered 4.34 billion views over time.
2 ED SHEERAN – “SHAPE OF YOU” (4.54 BILLION VIEWS)
Ed Sheeran opened this list, and the English singer came very close to closing it out, too. That is because the “Shape of You” music video, released in January of 2017, has garnered an astounding 4.54 billion views on YouTube to date, making it the second most-watched music video of the decade.
In many ways, the video for “Thinking Out Loud” walked so that Ed Sheeran could run in “Shape of You.” Here, the singer is no longer simply trying to present himself as a leading man, but already fully embracing that role – shirtless, sweaty, and flirtatious. In many ways, this could have been a video from Justin Bieber, Usher, or Justin Timberlake. But perhaps part of the charm of “Shape of You” is that this is Ed Sheeran after all, a singer-songwriter who turned into a full male popstar.
1 LUIS FONSI FEAT. DADDY YANKEE – “DESPACITO” (6.58 BILLION VIEWS)
From Billboard to music rankings around the world, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee broke all the records with “Despacito.” It’s no surprise, then, that the song’s performance on YouTube was no different. In fact, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” is not only the most-watched music video of the decade, but also the most-watched music video on YouTube ever.
The video for “Despacito” has 6.58 billion views to date, and let us be clear: the official music video contains the original version of the song, not the Justin Bieber remix that many attributed to the success of the song on mainstream radio. All in all, this is a huge achievement for Latin pop, reggaeton, and music coming from Latin America in general.
