YuGiOh! 10 Ways Joey Could Have Improved His Dueling Game

While Joey might be one of the most successful duelists in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime next to Yugi, he certainly isn’t without his faults. His deck construction may have let him down sometimes, and he sometimes gets in his own way.

While fans might love Joey and his luck-based decks, there were definitely times Joey could have improved.

10 Thought More About His First Deck

Joey’s first deck is wasn’t well thought out, and was filled with only monsters, and no spell or trap cards to speak of. This is of course a huge oversight that would eventually be fixed with the help of grandpa and Yugi shaping him up.

His Duelist Kingdom deck wasn’t all that much better in the grand scheme of things, but it at least had a bit more balance to it. Joey could have improved his chances from the start with a better deck.

9 Removed Insect Queen From His Warrior Deck

Insect Queen isn’t that great of a card in insect decks, so Joey using it in his warrior deck really just didn’t make any sense. It doesn’t have enough attack points to justify its level, and it needs tributes in order to attack.

While Insect Queen’s inclusion in Joey’s deck was more about the symbolism than anything, its appearances really should have been more limited at the very least. It wasn’t the best idea to add into his deck.

8 Used The Proper Version Of Flame Swordsman

The anime never knew what to do with Flame Swordsman. It’s a fusion monster that was treated as a normal monster in the anime, despite sometimes still being shown with the purple color that indicates its fusion status. So why not actually use the version of the card that actually matched how it was treated in the anime?

Blue Flame Swordsman is an effect monster that basically is the anime version of Flame Swordsman, so that card should have taken Flame Swordsman’s place to at least have some sort of continuity when it comes to this card having a place in Joey’s deck. It would have improved his game.

7 Relyed Less On The Time Wizard

Yugi gives this card to Joey early in season one. While it does come in clutch and win Joey a few duels, when he uses it against Yugi, it actually powers up Dark Magician into Dark Sage.

The Time Wizard is a tricky card with sometimes surprising effects, so relying on it less would have helped Joey improve.

6 Relyed Less On Luck

Joey relies on luck consistently in every deck that he crafts. While plot armor usually makes sure that this works in his favor, sometimes that just isn’t the case.

Joey loses quite a few duels that might have been won had he packed cards that didn’t rely on a flip of a coin or the roll of a die. A few less cards based on luck would have gone a long way.

5 Avoided Challenging Kaiba

Joey challenges Kaiba twice during the anime, once in Duelist Kingdom and once during Battle City. While the Battle City duel was a lot more good-hearted than Duelist Kingdom, it’s pretty clear that it’s never a good idea for Joey to try and fight Kaiba.

It never works out in his favor. He never beats Kaiba and it doesn’t do much for his happiness either. It would have been a better idea to wait to challenge Kaiba until he had come farther in his dueling career, at least the first time.

4 Removed Swordsman Of Landstar

Why does Joey have Swordsman of Landstar in his deck? It’s a normal 500-attack-point monster in his deck that only occasionally comes in handy.

This slot in his deck could have been saved for either a better monster or a spell or trap card that wasn’t luck-based.

3 Avoided Dueling Against Duke

Joey duels against Duke Devlin in the anime with a deck made out of booster packs. All of the cards that he picked up were random.

Joey had no idea what he would get out of these packs, and lost because of that. The blow again came to Joey’s confidence, similarly to when he fought Kaiba. Once again, Joey could better improve in duels that were more constructive.

2 Kept The Cards Marik Added To His Deck

Joey uses a few additional cards in his Battle City deck while under the control of Marik.

While cards such as Hinotama aren’t actually great in the real game, they were more than strong enough in the anime and could have stood to bolster Joey’s deck a bit. Though, understandably, he didn’t like Marik, those cards could have improved his deck.

1 Avoided Magically-Powered Duels

When Mai and Joey originally duel during Waking the Dragons, Joey stands no real chance against Mai and her Orichalcos-powered Harpie deck.

It is only because of the Claw of Hermos appearing in his deck that he’s able to turn the tide and end things in a draw. This happened completely without Joey’s knowledge, but it does remind viewers that one way to have improved his game was to stay out of magical conflicts he couldn’t understand the full scope of.
