YuGiOh! The Odds Of Drawing Exodia On The First Turn

It’s possible to win a game of Yu-Gi-Oh! before the duel properly starts, as there is a small chance that a player could draw all five cards with pieces of Exodia in their starting hand. The most common ways to win duels in Yu-Gi-Oh! are knocking an opponent’s life points to zero or emptying their deck, but there are a few alternate win conditions.

The alternate win condition cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! work in a number of different ways. The “Destiny Board” cards spell out the word “FINAL” on each of its five cards, but only one is placed each turn and they take up spaces in the spell/trap card zone. “Final Countdown” is a spell that wins the duel once twenty turns have passed, “Holactie the Creator of Light” instantly wins the duel for its summoner, but it can only be summoned by tributing the three Egyptian God Cards, while “Last Turn” creates one last battle between monsters chosen by each player.

The most famous alternate win condition in Yu-Gi-Oh! involves “Exodia the Forbidden One.” If the player has all five Exodia cards in their hand, then they instantly win the duel. This was how Yugi defeated Kaiba in their first duel. The Exodia cards are “Exodia the Forbidden One”, “Left Arm of the Forbidden One”, “Left Leg of the Forbidden One”, “Right Arm of the Forbidden One”, and “Right Leg of the Forbidden One.” The player draws five cards at the start of a duel, which means it’s possible to draw all five Exodia cards and win the game before anyone takes an action, but what are the odds of actually doing this?

The Chances Of Drawing The Forbidden One In Yu-Gi-Oh!

YuGiOh! The Odds Of Drawing Exodia On The First Turn

A user on the Yu-Gi-Oh! Reddit page has worked out the odds of drawing all five Exodia cards as part of the opening hand. This assumes that the player is using a 40 card deck (which is the minimum number a player can use) and is following the official Forbidden & Restricted card list, by only having one of each Exodia card in the deck. The odds of pulling all five Exodia cards as part of the initial draw is 1 in 658,008. This means that players shouldn’t be too concerned about losing to Exodia on the first turn, since the chances are incredibly slim.

Throwing Exodia into the water might have been Weevil’s smartest move in the anime, but the Forbidden One isn’t quite as imposing in the real card game, especially at the start of a Yu-Gi-Oh! duel. Still, there’s always a chance of winning a game by pulling all the Exodia cards on the first turn.
