Zack Snyder Says He May Cast Some Familiar Faces In Rebel Moon

Director Zack Snyder says he may cast familiar faces in the upcoming science-fiction epic Rebel Moon. Best known for his work on comic book movies such as Watchmen, Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League, Snyder recently released his passion project Army of the Dead on Netflix earlier this year. Following that film’s overwhelming success, Snyder has formed a partnership with the streamer to produce a prequel, Army of Thieves, helm a sequel, and a massive sci-fi blockbuster in Rebel Moon.

Rebel Moon is reportedly something Snyder has wanted to work on for a while. Plot details remain under wraps but the film is said to be comparable to Star Wars. Supposedly, Synder has reworked an idea he pitched to LucasFilm many years ago; following a young woman who must travel from her faraway space colony to neighboring planets to recruit warriors to combat an intergalactic warlord. Rebel Moon development is very much in the early stages, but Snyder is beginning to think about who he wants to cast.

In a recent interview with ComicBook discussing the upcoming Army of Thieves, Snyder spoke on Rebel Moon. The director was asked if he’d considering casting some familiar faces in his space epic. Read what he had to say below:

“Always. I mean, I love my guys. I always call these guys. I like my acting family and I always, if they’re not busy or whatever, it’s always an honor to get to work with them again…Like Billy Crudup and all those guys. It’s always like, these are people. It’s just that I have been really fortunate and worked with such great people and consider so many of them my friends that, yeah, that’d be great.”

As is the case with the best directors—from Martin Scorsese to Christopher Nolan—filmmakers often build close relationships with cast and crew members and, therefore, do what they can do work with the same people. For example, Snyder forged a handful of relationships while adapting Alan Moore’s Watchmen. Among others, that film starred Billy Crudup, Carla Gugino, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan—actors he’s collaborated with since and even brought into the DCEU. While Morgan appeared as Thomas Wayne in Batman V. Superman (subtly setting up Flashpoint Batman), Crudup starred as Flash’s father, Henry Allen, in Justice League. On top of that, Snyder has previously said that he most likely would’ve had Gugino play the Selina Kyle/Catwoman to Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Snyder’s has referred to Rebel Moon’s scope and scale as being Man of Steel’s Krypton scene on steroids. It would seem that the film is his attempt at starting his very own science-fiction franchise. That being said, his focus is currently on the Army of Dead sequel, which will likely be his last zombified outing as his attention shifts to Rebel Moon. Army of Thieves focuses on safe-cracker Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer). For that film, Snyder’s passed the torch to Army of the Dead’s Schweighöfer, who returned as both the star and director of the prequel/spinoff. Following the controversy surrounding his time with Warner Bros./DC Films, it’s safe to say Snyder and Netflix are a match made in heaven, allowing for the creative freedom a filmmaker like Snyder deserves.
