Warning: SPOILERS for Zack Snyder’s Justice League

There are few superhero directors who love Easter Eggs and comic book references as much as Zack Snyder, which means his completed vision of Justice League may end up setting a new record.

Forget the normal strategy for fitting in DCEU clues, references, or nods to the fans. The four hour runtime of Zack Snyder’s Justice League means a bigger chance than ever before to fill every scene with fan service secrets. To make sure that no DC or DCEU fan misses out on a single comic book reference, inside joke, or blink-and-you-miss-it secret detail, we’re breaking them all down. From the comics that Zack Snyder painstakingly recreated on film, to the callbacks to Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, our guide is the only one you’ll need. So with one final SPOILER warning, let’s get started.

The Icelandic Village’s Aquaman Arch

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

The musical scene following Arthur Curry’s exit from his meeting with Bruce will be hard to forget, as the women of the town gather to honor the legendary demigod who has come, saved them, and now retreats back into the sea. But it isn’t the first hint at this dynamic audiences get. When Bruce first enters the town, he walks beneath an arch unmistakably matching that of Aquaman, additionally decorated with runes in the shape of tridents. The fact that these are real runes, repurposed to pay tribute to Aquaman sets the stage for the kind of myth-making and worship central to Zack Snyder’s vision of the DCEU.

Batman’s Knightmare Revisited (But Reversed)

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

Fans got their first glimpse at Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne in the Icelandic cold in the earliest Justice League trailers. But it isn’t the first time Batman is shown striding to the edge of a cliff in a coat and goggles. The callback to the Knightmare sequence in Batman v Superman is hard to ignore, even if the color scheme and temperature are as reversed as Bruce’s mission. Having seen how the world dies, Bruce is now stepping up to find its salvation. The layers go deeper, too, as Bruce is still looking out upon his last chance at victory… but bookend this opening with his final scene in the Knightmare timeline, and Bruce is stuck in a vicious cycle.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League Cameo

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

This Justice League cameo was revealed by Zack Snyder as part of his leaking of still frames of the Snyder Cut via the social media platform Vero. All fans knew at the time was it implied a deleted scene involving Lois Lane( Amy Adams). In the context of the movie, the reporter is just as fond as Fred & Ginger Coffee as Snyder–recreating the real-world favorite coffee shop of the director for the movie. So it only makes sense that Snyder himself should have a similar means of getting by in a world without Superman.

The Return of Jimmy Olsen

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

After Zack Snyder’s role for Jimmy Olsen in Batman v Superman ruffled fan feathers, it seems he took the opportunity to show love for the character in the sequel. Following Lois Lane’s trip to Fred & Ginger’s, it’s revealed she buys a coffee for herself every morning… as well as Jimmy–sorry, Jerry, the policeman stationed at the Heroes Park memorial. A role played by actor Marc McClure, beloved to Superman fans for his roles as the intrepid young photojournalist to Christopher Reeve’s Man of Steel, as well as the follow-up Supergirl film.

Wonder Woman Stands With Justice (Her Ancestor)

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

It makes perfect sense for Wonder Womanto be introduced atop the scales of justice, valuing nothing more than the truth. But the statue is technically of the actual mythological Themis, a Titan of Greek mythology (for mythology newbies, that is the order of gods and goddesses who came before Zeus and his family). That literally makes her an ‘Old God’ of Earth. With sword in hand and possessing the essence of the gods who first walked the Earth, Wonder Woman’s connection means much more than fans realize.

Ray Porter’s Cameo (Aside From The Voice of Darkseid)

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

For many DC fans, Zack Snyder’s Justice League was anticipated solely for a chance to see Darkseid in a feature film. Ray Porter’s performance as the villain will go unnoticed by many thanks to the CG bringing him and his fellow Apokoliptians to life. While it’s true Darkseid may be one of DC’s greatest villains, fans can also look out for Ray Porter playing the blacksmith responsible for manning the crucible used to forge a metal case around the Mother Box entrusted to the world of humans. Observe him looking upon his smithing work, and tremble.

The Flash Knows His Gorillas

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

The character of Barry Allen was one of the most impacted by the changes in writing and humor brought with Joss Whedon’s reshoots, turning the tragic hero into fast-talking comic relief. However, one of his jokes (credited to writer Chris Terrio) did survive the edits. When listing his skills to Bruce Wayne upon finding himself in an impromptu job interview, Barry claims that he can speak sign language… but only gorilla sign language. While that talent may not actually be seen in practice, it’s impossible for fans to see this line as anything but a nod to the psychically gifted Gorilla Grodd, one of Flash’s oldest and most beloved comic book foes.

Detective Crispus Allen, Gotham Central

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

J.K. Simmons may claim the spotlight (Bat-Signal?) in his brief appearance as Jim Gordon, man viewers will wonder if the police officer catching him up to speed on the mayhem in Gotham is equally of interest. He most certainly is, and is called by name: Crispus Allen, played by actor Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. Allen has been a regular in Gotham City comic stories for years, acting as a pivotal figure in the Gotham Central series. Here’s hoping he’ll return in the future, should a sequel to Justice League or another adventure with Ben Affleck’s Batman become a reality.

ACE Chemicals Can’t Be Missed

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

Fans will have multiple chances to spot another great Easter Egg in the Gotham skyline. As in the theatrical cut of Justice League, a neon sign advertises the proximity of ACE Chemicals to the airport where Bruce and Barry exit the former’s jet (along with his Mercedes). The toxic company is one of the most infamous locations in the DC Universe, responsible for turning Jared Leto’s Joker into the madman he is today. Fortunately, should this moment be missed, the ACE Chemicals sign is once again visible in the film’s closing scene, once again impossible to miss in Gotham City’s skyline in the distance.

The Anti-Life’s Omega Equation

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

Fans of DC Comics who know Darkseid are aware of two things: his love of the letter omega, and his desire for the Anti-Life Equation. The iconic symbol is normally related to the Omega Effect responsible for his signature Omega Beam attacks, while the famous Anti-Life Equation is a literal mathematical equation. That all changes in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. What originally seemed like an Apokoliptian attack or symbol is revealed in the film to actually be the Anti-Life Equation. And right at its heart rests the image us humans know as omega. But to Darkseid, it’s a whole new meaning and origin for his personal trademark.

Batman Still Digs His Gargoyles

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

In what was already a standout Easter Egg for Batman fans, the gargoyle first seen on the cover of Detective Comics #682 makes its full appearance in Zack Snyder’s original version of the movie. The theatrical version obscured the homage with a plastic tarp, where Snyder follows through with the full sequence. First obscured, then revealed to Jim Gordon in all its comic referencing-glory. Adding artist Graham Nolan to the list of DC talent to see their work immortalized in the DCEU.

‘The Blood of The Old Gods’

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

Snyder’s original vision for Darkseid, Apokolips, and the Fourth World created by Jack Kirby is given infinitely more time to take shape, even dropping the term ‘New Gods’ as the people Steppenwolf wishes to return to. The distinction of being a ‘God’ in the DC Universe can mean anything from a magical champion to a literal deity of infinite power. But the comics have particularly disagreed on the connection between the Olympian Gods and the New Gods. In modern times, the so-called ‘God Wave’ emitted in the blast that created the Fourth World and its New Gods is suggested to have also created the Olympian Gods–after it ‘bounced,’ meaning less powerful. But any confusion is dispelled in Justice League, with Darkseid being bested by Ares and Zeus, and Steppenwolf sensing the ‘blood of the Old Gods’ in Diana’s veins.

Darkseid’s Latin name

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

The Greek history discovered by Diana isn’t the only source of a new name or title for Darkseid. When Steppenwolf reveals to Desaad that he has found the world which defied and defeated Darkseid, the servant seeks the Lord of Apokolips directly. While the technology of this cross-universe… wall isn’t explained in the film, Desaad’s beckoning for Darkseid is thankfully delivered in Latin. The entire phrase is difficult to make out, but the first words which seemingly call upon Darkseid are as follows: “Domine qui infernum conflegrit.” Which can be translated to a few variations of “Lord, who shattered hell,” or “Lord, whom hell burns before.” A title grand enough to keep anyone from wondering why Apokoliptians speak Latin.

‘You Talk To Machines?’

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

Zack Snyder promised to make it his mission way back during Batman v Superman to put an end to anyone seeing Aquaman as anything but a badass. He achieved that with his casting alone, but shared writer Geoff Johns’ annoyance with casual comic fans who claimed Arthur Curry’s greatest ability was “talking to fish.” When the team first assembles and gathers in the Wayne Aerospace hangar, it’s Cyborg who claims that the grounded Flying Fox wants to fly–forcing Aquaman to ask, “you talk to machines?” The joke, like Cyborg’s clarification that he speaks to “intelligence,” is a special treat for any fans who catch it.

Martha, It’s (Still) Not an ‘S’

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

The finished version of Zack Snyder’s Justice League gave fans the Martha/Lois Lane scene they so sorely missed, but the exchange serves a few purposes in the story. For one, it’s the push Lois needs to “come back to the living” in the wake of Superman’s death. For the larger DCEU, it offers an introduction to Martian Manhunter’s ability to disguise. But if there is one moment fans really shouldn’t miss, it’s Martha referring to seeing ‘that S’ everywhere she looks. A mistake Lois made back in Man of Steel, causing Clark to correct her that “it’s not an S.” The slight smirk from Amy Adams suggests the sound of Clark’s correction is still replaying in her memory.

Zack Snyder’s Producers Get a Shout Out

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

The team’s solution for breaking into the STAR Labs compound surrounding the Kryptonian ship is an old-fashioned one: dress up as soldiers, and hack the security checkpoint. The sequence is another chance for Ezra Miller to shine as Barry Allen, but fans shouldn’t miss the wealth of Easter Eggs offered at the same time. For starters, the fictional name created for Barry is “Wesley Rowe,” almost certainly a reference to Zack Snyder’s longtime producing partners Wesley Coller and Jim Rowe. As for the other names on the screen, it appears the entire VFX team behind the movie also moonlight for STAR Labs, including Amy Altvater, John ‘DJ’ Desjardin, Brad Fack, Derek Fortuna, Zachary Fox, Tamara Kent, Matthew Magnolia, Marshall Rainey, Robin Williams, and more.

‘The Future Has Taken Root in The Present’

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

No fan of Zack Snyder needs to be told what a large role John Boorman’s Excalibur plays in his filmmaking generally, and the mythology of Batman v Superman specifically. First called to attention as the film attended by the Wayne family just prior to their deaths, the film echoes throughout the story which follows (and even spread into posters for Aquaman’s movie). And while Zack Snyder’s version of King Arthur may eventually become a reality, Justice League at least adds another tribute. When the Kryptonian ship’s warnings are ignored, and a doomed future ensured by resurrecting Superman, the intelligence (voiced by Carla Gugino) proclaims that “The future has taken root in the present.” Words spoken by Merlin in Excalibur… when a child who would change the world is conceived.

Darkseid is The Destroyer, Not Conan

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

Mighty as Conan the Barbarian may be, there can be only one true ‘Destroyer’ in the universe. So when Cyborg receives his vision of the Unity destroying Earth, the smile on Darkseid’s face proclaims him the victor. Admittedly, the shot of an aged and crowned Arnold Schwarzenegger from Conan the Barbarian may not be as famous today as it was upon its release, or among fans still hoping to see King Conan become a real movie. But it’s obvious that the Justice League team recreated the iconic pose and throne for the ruler of Apokolips.

The Knightmare Begins in The Batcave

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

The shifting sands beneath Zack Snyder’s movie universe may mean that his planned story for Lois Lane in Justice League will never come true. Or if it is eventually adapted, things may not proceed as originally planned. But one thing is certain: Darkseid succeeds in killing Lois Lane, turning her to dust in Superman’s arms. The death is just one shocker in a series of Knightmare premonitions, but what some fans won’t recognize is the location. The wreckage and rubble around Superman obscures the view, but the red screens confirm Lois dies in the very center of the Batcave. The only other detail illuminated? The burned remains of the Robin suit, Bruce Wayne’s greatest tragedy.

The Death of Green Lantern Kilowog

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

The ancient Green Lantern who assisted the residents of Earth in fighting off Darkseid the first time around may steal the spotlight, and given his sacrifice, that’s only right. But he isn’t the only Lantern to appear in the movie, and considering how badly things go for ring-slingers in Zack Snyder’s movie, maybe it’s for the best that Ryan Reynolds couldn’t return as Hal Jordan. When Cyborg’s Knightmare vision is brought to a close, audiences can see the wreckage of the Hall of Justice… completely with the corpse of Kilowog. The domino mask raises questions, since the Corps’ commander rarely sports one, but his appearance is otherwise a perfect match.

Justice League’s Tribute to Spider-Man’s Uncle

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

The legal ramifications of cross-company references makes a DC Easter Egg in a Marvel movie rare, and the opposite even rarer. But in the League’s visit to the Heroes Park memorial–commemorating not only the Black Zero attack in Man of Steel, but the countless victims who lost their lives–a massive nod to Spider-Man is dropped where it’s guaranteed to be seen. When Flash is falling against the stone tablets in his fight with Superman, the name ‘Ben Parker’ is shown among a handful of other visual effect artists. So even if the MCU is choosing to ignore the death of Uncle Ben, the DCEU isn’t.

Green Lantern Security lock

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

As if there were any doubts about Zack Snyder’s love for all things Green Lantern, or how much every crew member seems to adore the only missing Justice Leaguer, yet another Easter Egg to the hero can be found in STAR Labs. Sure, the door handle/lock mechanism of the glass box used to superheat alien metal could look like anything… but it sure looks exactly like the Green Lantern insignia. For the best look, keep your eyes peeled to the center of the doors once Silas Stone closes them to hold off a raging Steppenwolf.

The Real Clark Kent Wears Plaid

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

Superman said it himself at the end of Man of Steel, when he affirmed to General Swanwick–secretly Martian Manhunter– that he hails from Kansas, making him “as American as it gets.” And nothing makes that message as clear as a red plaid shirt. It was true for Superman: The Movie, it was true for Smallville, and it’s still just as true to this day. Even if Lois doesn’t explicitly say as much when pulling the shirt from Clark’s boxed belongings.

Superman Returns, But is Not The Same

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

The Death of Superman is famous for its place in comic book history, but even if Zack Snyder took his cues from the comics in bringing Doomsday to life on screen, the resurrection part is a whole different animal. Even after he is ‘remade’ by the power of the Mother Box, the man Superman was when he died takes some time to return… if he does at all. The Christ analogy at work in Superman’s mythology isn’t an invention of Snyder’s, but Justice League does tackle the idea of the divine at work. Superman’s effect on small stones is amplified and controlled by him upon his return, but it’s the same talent at work on the Kent farm–with a butterfly–that drives home the point that Superman has undergone his own form of metamorphosis.

Superman Sees Every Kryptonian Costume

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

The idea that the Kryptonian ship recognizes the presence of even a dead Superman is a sequence sure to linger in every fans’ mind, but when he returns on his own much later, the full offerings of the ship are revealed. Superman ultimately strides past his previous costume to select one of black and silver, but fans of Kryptonian costumes still get their fill. Accompanying the suit arrived at in Man of Steel are every other type of Kryptonian dress seen in the movie as well. From the refined bone armor worn by Jor-El (Russell Crowe) to the explorer space suits worn by Zod’s (Michael Shannon) troops, and the military armor he wore himself.

The Supergirl References Keep Coming

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

At this point every DCEU viewer should know that the conspicuously open life support pod on board the Scout Ship belonged to Kara Zor-El, an ancient relative of Kal-El who led the ship during Krypton’s massive age of expansion. Zack Snyder refuses to tease his plan for what would effectively be the DCEU’s ancient Supergirl, but take a closer look at the bone armor on display (pictured above) and it’s clear that particular outfit is, unlike the Superman suit, intended for a female crew member.

The Shell Casing Callback

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

Less an Easter Egg than an easy to miss repeated image of Snyder’s, the slowed footage of a falling shell casing makes its first appearance in Batman v Superman during the deaths of Thomas and Martha Wayne. The slow-motion bouncing of a bullet casing concludes the murders themselves, seemingly etched into Bruce’s memory. That scene begins Bruce’s descent into darkness, making the repeated image of a cannon firing its salute to Superman’s sacrifice the symbol of his return to the light. If this repeated detail is meant to mark Batman’s journey from a character of the dark to a defender of the light, then it only seems right it should reappear as he leads his united team into a fight for all mankind.

Ryan Choi Gets His Own Tease

Zack Snyders Justice League Every Easter Egg & DCEU Reference

Of all the changes and storylines director Joss Whedon and Warner Bros. decided to remove from Snyder’s film, few raised as many questions as the apparent role played by Ryan Choi (Ryan Zheng), the brilliant scientist destined to become the superhero known as The Atom. As one of the most prominent Asian superheroes in DC’s Universe and a future Justice League member, fans will be pleased to see Ryan included as Silas Stone’s second-in-command as head of the STAR Labs installation. And sure to give the fans exactly the hope for the future they wanted, the final montage gives Ryan a conclusion of his own… confirming he’s moving up in the world, and that nanotechnology is most definitely “his thing.”

Deathstroke is Headed For The Batman

The future of Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke is about as uncertain as the character’s, shown to be hunting Batman in one time period, and among Batman’s last allies in the post-apocalyptic Knightmare. One thing the Snyder Cut of Justice League does confirm is the real reason Lex Luthor has sought his attention. Offering up Batman’s true identity, the stage is set for what would have been Deathstroke’s role in Ben Affleck’s Batman movie. Add in the extra indication that it would be Batman responsible for Slade’s missing eye in the DCEU, and it’s no wonder fans are calling for Affleck’s film all over again.
