Zack Snyders Star Wars Reworking Will Do What Disney Couldnt

Zack Snyder’s Netflix sci-fi movie Rebel Moon started as a Star Wars movie, and its abandoned connections to that franchise now make it that much more interesting. Rebel Moon is part of a first-look deal Snyder recently signed with Netflix, which will also include a sequel to his zombie heist movie for the streamer, Army of the Dead, and an action movie to be directed by Snyder’s long-time stunt coordinator Damon Caro. With the Army of the Dead prequel Army of Thieves, animated prequel series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, and animated Norse mythology show Twilight of the Gods also on the way, the streaming giant is going to be home to a great deal of storytelling from Snyder’s Stone Quarry Productions.

At the same time, Rebel Moon stands out from the rest for what it started as. It isn’t uncommon for script rewrites and other changes (such as Tig Notaro’s casting in Army of the Dead) to lead to a particular project’s finished form being a significant contrast from what it was originally conceived to be. Still, Rebel Moon is something unique among Snyder’s upcoming Netflix projects.

Not that the time loop theory and other unsolved mysteries of Army of the Dead or the spin that Snyder and Jay Oliva will be putting on Norse mythology with Twilight of the Gods aren’t stories viewers are eager to see unfold. Nonetheless, Rebel Moon is a wild card in Zack Snyder’s upcoming filmography because it’s the rare case where what a movie won’t be is as interesting as what it will be.

Rebel Moon Began As A Star Wars Pitch

As mentioned above, Rebel Moon started as a concept for a Star Wars movie, but it’s now being reworked into an original space sci-fi adventure. It isn’t entirely clear exactly where Rebel Moon would’ve fit into the current Disney Star Wars roadmap had Snyder been able to get it going in its original form. With that said, it seems almost certain from the plot synopsis that it would’ve been a Rogue One or Solo-style standalone movie rather than Snyder’s bid to make a Skywalker saga movie.

Rebel Moon will focus on a space colony under threat from an intergalactic warlord known as Balisarius, with a young woman recruiting warriors from neighboring planets to help fight off the coming invasion. Snyder has described Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai as another major influence on Rebel Moon. While that’s sure to drive analysis and dissection of the movie when it hits Netflix (Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai being a fairly common influence on Star Wars properties), its Star Wars connections, or lack thereof, are just as ripe to go under the microscope. Because the movie Rebel Moon began as and what it will now be are, while not necessarily black and white different, still things that are bound to be pondered over.

Rebel Moon’s Origins Make Star Wars Comparisons Inevitable

Snyder’s film beginning as a Star Wars pitch makes it impossible that it won’t be compared to the franchise it was originally conceived as an entry within. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though. Since Star Wars was revived under the Disney banner, it’s never been more omnipresent, and some might even argue oversaturated, in the public consciousness. Still, Disney has made efforts to diversify things away from strictly the Skywalker-centric movies with Rogue One, Solo, The Mandalorian, and the numerous upcoming Disney+ shows. The side effect, despite the polarized reception to the sequel trilogy, being that it’s embedded Star Wars into the popular culture more deeply than ever, after already being pretty firmly entrenched.

Rebel Moon, with its conception as a Star Wars movie (and even bearing a title that the uninformed could easily confuse for one), isn’t going to be able to shed that burden, with Snyder bound to be asked at length about the film’s Star Wars-based genesis on the press tour. Still, that doesn’t have to come to the movie’s detriment. Indeed, it might even be much more to its advantage.

Rebel Moon Being A Reworked Star Wars Movie Adds To Its Intrigue

By being a repurposed Star Wars movie, Rebel Moon begs the question that it now can’t help but answer. What would a Star Wars movie minus the major elements of Star Wars look like? Snyder’s movie is now forced to shed elements like the Jedi, the Sith, the Galactic Republic, and replace them with an entire mythos all its own. Going by its title, the most significant Star Wars elements Rebel Moon may have been able to hold onto are the rebellion and the Galactic Empire, but even these are sure to look a lot different in the world of Rebel Moon. Viewers can also likely say goodbye to the metaphysical side of Star Wars, such as the Force, and other aspects like light-speed interplanetary travel are sure to be re-imagined, too, but that just makes Rebel Moon more fascinating than it already was.

In effect, Snyder will be taking the Star Wars out of Star Wars, and what the resulting film ends up as is the biggest marketing asset he and Netflix have going for Rebel Moon. While the movie being an original work by Snyder frees it from pre-conceived expectations of lightsaber battles and Jedi training on one level, the fact that it once was a Star Wars movie sets up another right alongside it. Between now and when Rebel Moon hits Netflix, a great deal of the anticipation for it sure to be steeped in Snyder originally developing it as a Star Wars pitch, and what the movie has become now that it’s morphed into Episode I of its own universe.

Rebel Moon is reportedly set to get underway in 2022, so casting news, concept art, and set photos will be hitting the internet in due course. Until viewers actually get a look at the film, the idea of a movie the once might’ve had a Jedi presence being turned into its own unique entity is sure to be one of the biggest questions surrounding Rebel Moon. Exactly what the final film will end up being after veering away from Star Wars could well be one of the most intriguing things it has going for it.
