With the news that Zawe Ashton will be one of the Captain Marvel 2 villains, fans are wondering who she might play.

Marvel news keeps hitting with the report that actress Zawe Ashton is playing the villain in the upcoming Captain Marvel 2. The sequel to the 2019 Captain Marvel movie is said to feature multiple villains and Ahston could be playing any number of Marvel baddies from the comics.

Without knowing the story it’s hard to say for sure, but Captain Marvel has a number of villains in the comics who would be ideal candidates for Ahston to play. There are some left-field choices too, depending on how the Marvel Cinematic Universe chooses to depict some characters.

10 Queen Veranke

A villain with better than average odds to appear at some point is Queen Veranke. Veranke is the queen of the Skrull empire in Marvel Comics. Captain Marvel introduced the Skrulls to the MCU, so it’s not hard to imagine she’s far behind. Especially considering she was the main antagonist of Secret Invasion, a 2008 comic book event. Secret Invasion is the title of an upcoming Disney+ streaming series featuring Nick Fury, so it’s very possible she is a character who could be appearing in both Secret Invasion and Captain Marvel 2.

9 Titannus

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has gender-swapped some characters here and there, like Ghost from Ant-Man And The Wasp. That could potentially happen again, perhaps with Titannus. Titannus is a fairly obscure villain, but like Veranke, a Skrull who could play a role in the story of the sequel. He was one of the subjects of the original Super-Skrull Project. He first fought Carol Danvers when she was Ms. Marvel and a member of the Defenders superteam back in the 1970s.

8 Nitro

Nitro is another obscure villain that could potentially show up. This supervillain has a connection to Carol through the death of the original Captain Marvel – Mar-Vell. Nitro was the subject of experiments by the Kree Lunatic Legion and gained the ability to explode and reform himself at will. This is a pretty serious ability and he’s used it to devastating effect. Most notably, his actions touched off the Civil War storyline in the comics and he also blew the skin right off of Wolverine, right down to his adamantium bones.

7 Brood In Disguise

The Skrulls and Kree aren’t the only cosmic villains fans could see in Phase 4 of the MCU. The Brood are traditionally associated with the X-Men, but it’s through them that Carol Danvers has a connection. Carol was an unwilling resident in Rogue’s mind for years, and during the time the X-Men battled the alien horde.

The Brood first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #155 in March 1982. They’re an insectoid race that infests human hosts and can mimic human appearance as well. They’re terrifying and it would Zawe Ashton to play any number of characters.

6 The Matriarch

The Matriarch is a fairly obscure Marvel villain, but a player in the cosmic side of the Marvel universe. She is the highest-ranking member of the Church of Universal Truth that conquered numerous planets in the galaxy. More recently, she has been mixed up with the Guardians of the Galaxy and Adam Warlock. It’s conceivable that she could cross paths with Captain Marvel out in the cosmos, especially as the different branches of the MCU are getting closer together.

5 Una-Rogg

A character that Ashton could easily be playing is Una-Rogg. This Kree warrior is the daughter of Yon-Rogg, the villain of the first Captain Marvel movie, played by Jude Law in one of his best roles. In the comics, Una has the ability to make men fall in love with her and do her bidding. She originally sought vengeance against Mar-Vell for the death of her father, and it’s possible she could seek out Carol to find out what happened to him in the MCU.

4 Moonstone

Another major candidate for Ashton is Moonstone. Karla Sofen is a longstanding villain and part of the Masters of Evil, lead by Baron Zemo who is going to feature prominently as one of the villains in the upcoming The Falcon And The Winter Soldier series. Moonstone impersonated Ms. Marvel for years and is generally regarded as the main nemesis of Carol in the comics. She would be a serious foe in the movies; Moonstone’s powers include superhuman strength, speed, agility, and durability, flight, and photon blasts.

3 Rogue

Rogue is likely the character Marvel Comics fans want to see most in the sequel. Some theories already have her as the villain of Captain Marvel 2, and it’s certainly possible, now that Quicksilver has appeared in WandaVision. Ashton could play Rogue, who would certainly go on to a huge role with the X-Men in the MCU.

Rogue and Carol Danvers have a long, complicated relationship. Rogue absorbed Carol’s powers and consciousness in a battle many years ago, which left Carol basically a ghost in Rogue’s head for the better part of a decade.

2 Deathbird

The Brood isn’t the only major alien race associated with the X-Men who could factor into the movie. If Captain Marvel 2 stays out in space, it could easily feature the Shi’ar Empire. If it does, then one of its nastiest villains, Deathbird, could appear. Deathbird is the older sister of Lilliandra, Empress of the Shi’ar. Deathbird is frequently a rival for the throne and her machinations could be an interesting way to introduce the empire and set a foundation for future stories.

1 Mystique

Mystique has been one of the most prominent characters in the last few X-Men films, so it’s very likely fans will see her again. Mystique has a long history with Rogue and Carol Danvers. Raven Darkholme is ultimately responsible for Rogue using her absorption powers against Carol in a battle between the Avengers and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. The same events could play out in the movie, and Ashton could be playing the enigmatic shapeshifter for years to come.
