Recently a The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild player sparked a controversial conversation about the title using a meme from the 2019 movie Joker. While the 2017 installment in the Zelda franchise received universal praise culminating in its winning Game of the Year, some longtime fans criticized it for departing from too many of the series staples.

Compared to the decades of Zelda content prior, Breath of the Wild is vastly different from any other game in the franchise thanks in large part to the title’s open world. Traditional progression through a series of dungeons to acquire a collection of unique items was largely discarded by Nintendo in favor of a game that focuses on exploration. There are many longtime Zelda fans that see these changes as a breath of fresh air for the series, yet some believe the developers went too far in certain aspects and that BOTW does not hold as strongly to the franchise’s identity as do the majority of the series’ other installments.

Reddit user Goat_Lincoln summed up this line of thinking through a Joker meme they shared. This opinion states that BOTW is a great standalone game, but when compared to the rest of the series it is not a great Zelda game. The meme sparked a conversation in the comment section, where many players expressed how they would like to marry certain aspects of the BOTW formula to some traditional series aspects for what they believe would be an ideal Zelda game.

According to the comment section, it seems that many players would prefer to keep the open world from Breath of the Wild. However, they would also like to see the return of traditional Zelda dungeons, as opposed to the much smaller Divine Beasts seen in the 2017 game. Items, enemy variety, a traditional score, and even the return to prominence of the legendary Triforce were just some of the elements that players would like to see return. In spite of all of these requests, however, there appeared to be very little negative sentiment directed at BOTW for its overall experience.

Even though BOTW was an immensely successful departure from the Zelda formula, Nintendo might be inclined to listen to some of the traditionalist mindsets for Breath of the Wild 2. Bringing back old school dungeons for the sequel would certainly give the game a different identity from its immediate predecessor and prevent stale game design. Remarkably enough, this would be in line with FromSoftware’s design strategy for Elden Ring, which also appears to be taking inspiration from Breath of the Wild in its own way.
