Rumors suggest that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask may soon be coming to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s fantasy adventure series celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, as epic adventure starring Link began with the original The Legend of Zelda in 1986. The series’ latest mainline release, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, is full of details but not enough to keep players busy during the long wait for Breath of the Wild’s sequel.

The two Legend of Zelda titles released on the Nintendo 64, 1998’s Ocarina of Time and 2000’s Majora’s Mask, are regarded as some of the franchise’s greatest hits. Series fans reserve a special place in their hearts for these games, and their return would likely be well-regarded for the 35th anniversary celebration. They were each most recently available on the Wii U’s Virtual Console, but they each got full remasters with new features and changes for the Nintendo 3DS. Though even emulated ports on the scale of Super Mario 3D All-Stars would likely be welcome, remasters more in line with the Nintendo 3DS versions (if not full-on remakes) of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask would like be better-received than 2021’s upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword remaster.

A new rumor now suggests that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask will soon be released on the Nintendo Switch. The rumor comes from leaker NateDrake, who says that past Legend of Zelda titles will be released on the Switch in honor of the series’ 35th anniversary (thanks, Wccftech). A high-definition rerelease of 2011’s Skyward Sword has already been announced for this year, with NateDrake suggesting that The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are also planned for Switch remasters or ports.

While Nintendo celebrates the history of the Zelda series to commemorate its 35th anniversary, many fans are looking ahead to the franchise’s future. A sequel to 2017’s Breath of the Wild has been confirmed to be in development, but details about the title are still very scarce. Many fans of the series’ first true open-world installment expect to see unused mechanics and ideas implemented into the sequel, giving players even more tools to use throughout their journey.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask are two of the most popular and memorable installments in the franchise, so if any remasters are coming for the franchise’s anniversary, these two are perhaps the safest bets to hedge on. While these updated Switch rereleases are only rumors at present, Nintendo is likely well aware how rehashing more of its greatest hits can sell.
