Zelda Skyward Sword Characters That Could Return In BOTW 2

The sequel to Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was announced in 2019, but it was only at E3 2021 that fans were given a brand-new gameplay trailer to pour over. While this trailer did not give a huge amount away, including an actual title, it did show off some new lands in the skies above Hyrule that appear to be traversable. This, understandably, drew fans to make several comparisons to Skyward Sword (which is getting a Switch HD remaster this July). The similarities between these Zelda games have made many wonder if any of the colorful characters from Skyward Sword could also make another showing when Breath of the Wild’s sequel releases in 2022.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is the first canonical game in the Zelda series. This entry was notable for taking players to Skyloft, a settlement in the clouds above initially unknown lands, where Link and Zelda both reside. Thanks to his Loftwing, Link can travel from the main island of Skyloft to other floating land masses in the sky throughout the duration of Skyward Sword.

Given that the latest trailer for BOTW2 has definite Skyward Sword vibes, and that there also appears to be some sort of time shift element present, this makes it feasible that Link could well travel to those very same levitating lands that players first discovered back in 2011. However, while these floating islands certainly resemble the ones in Skyward Sword, the garb worn by the character that can be seen skydiving down toward these formations is not as modern as the clothing worn by the Skyloft inhabitants. Therefore, where (and when) these lands actually are, could predate that of Skyward Sword and open the door for characters like Demise and more to appear.

Skyward Sword’s Supernatural Entities In The Sky

While The Legend of Zelda series is certainly fantastical, with a myriad of mystical and otherworldly beings, those who live in the sky within Skyward Sword are generally Hylian. And while Hylians themselves are more magical than the average human being, thanks to their larger ears that allow them to receive messages from the gods, they are still mortal. So, if Link travels back to a time in BOTW2 set before the events of Skyward Sword, he would be unlikely to meet any of the Hylian residents he originally encountered on Skyloft. There are, however, other sentient characters that live in the skies that are not Hylian: Batreaux and Levias.

Batreaux is first met in Skyward Sword after a small child goes missing. When Link searches for the child at night below the graveyard, he comes across the demon Batreaux, who has made his home in a shack underneath Skyloft. While initially assumed to be menacing, Batreaux is in fact a kind soul. Levias, meanwhile, is the guardian of the skies, having been appointed his position by the goddess Hylia before she transferred her soul into a mortal body.

There is every chance that, should BOTW2 tie in with Skyward Sword’s narrative, these two characters could reappear. Batreaux is seemingly linked to the enemies encountered on Skyloft (as releasing him from his demon form causes these foes to no longer prevail on the islands). Enemies in Breath of the Wild 2’s sky are more than likely, meaning Batreaux’s demon form may be present again to account for its existence. Meanwhile, Levias has clearly been a part of the sky for an exceptionally long time in Hyrule’s history. No matter how far back in time Link goes in Breath of the Wild 2, Levias is likely to be there in the clouds somewhere.
