Ryan Reynolds is witty, charming, and fantastic in both dramatic action blockbusters and comedic movies. He often has great chemistry with the actors he shares the screen with, although some in recent years have been particularly memorable because of the incredible connection that was built up through the screen.
Whether it’s because the banter between these actors absolutely works, or in one case sparks were genuinely flying on and off camera, Ryan Reynolds has managed to help audiences really believe in the relationships he is building. In most cases, the actor appears to be genuine friends with his co-stars, which definitely helps.
Hugh Jackman
Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds have always had a close friendship and clearly take great joy in mocking one another online. While they may seem like rivals, their on-screen chemistry goes to show how great their dynamic really is. That was clear all the way back in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Although the film was panned, as they would attest to, it couldn’t be denied that both actors were great in their roles and bounced off of one another perfectly. While the Wolverine and Deadpool crossover fans have hoped for still hasn’t happened, if it was to take place it might be one of the funniest duos Marvel has seen.
Jodie Comer
Ryan Reynolds often plays silly characters and needs someone to play the straight man against him. While usually his roles are based on him being the wittiest in the room, for Free Guy he relied on a hilarious innocence in his performance; one that Jodie Comer’s character masterfully works as the paradox to.
Comer plays the straight man role in a unique way here, sharing a great deal of chemistry in the back and forth between the two characters. Although there’s a romantic spark there because of the script, the respect each one has for the other actor can clearly be read as they match each other’s tone and banter superbly.
Dwayne Johnson
Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds recently teamed up in Red Notice and if the cast interviews are anything to go by it’s clear they had a lot of fun on the production together. That absolutely comes through on the film, as this buddy-comedy meshes well with the action elements.
Each actor brings something different to the table and while neither is new to the comedy scene, both have a very different style of delivery that somehow works perfectly as they attempt to one-up each other. The film’s success can definitely be attributed to the chemistry seen here. Indeed, Hobbs And Shaw even showcased a little bit of that dynamic as well.
Jake Gyllenhaal
The only friendship that may have rivaled that of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, and indeed crosses over with them, is the former’s relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal. The two have a lot of similarities in their humor, although Gyllenhaal often plays up more serious parts.
While filming Life the duo seemed to hit it off. Their partnership on screen was taken to a new level because of this, with Reynolds getting the rare opportunity recently to really dive into a more dramatic role, which Gyllenhaal worked alongside with ease.
Josh Brolin
Josh Brolin and Ryan Reynolds were expertly cast in their roles for Deadpool 2 and it is indeed one of the former’s best films. Brolin is the quintessential straight man here, playing a role that is full of emotional trauma from a future he desperately wants to save.
Wade Wilson is very much a paradox to Cable, yet they work so well together. It’s impossible to imagine Josh Brolin going the whole shoot without cracking up, yet the character appears to be so headstrong in his hatred for Deadpool that the jokes somehow come off as funnier.
Brianna Hildebrand
In regards to the Deadpool franchise, it’s hard to ignore the unexpected friendship between the merc with a mouth and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. The two mutants have a love/hate relationship full of snide remarks and hilarious tension.
They spend the whole time arguing with one another, yet the castmates bring a really interesting sibling dynamic to the table that works excellently. Brianna Hildebrand absolutely nails the part, with her sarcasm gloriously working alongside Ryan Reynold’s out-there ad-libs.
Lil Rel Howery
Lil Rey Howery brought everything to his role as Buddy in Free Guy, as the best friend to Ryan Reynolds’ Guy. There was a joyous nature to his performance that really complimented what Reynolds was doing. They genuinely felt like they had known each other for years.
Perhaps it’s because each one tried to deliver an even more wholesome line, rather than one undermining the other as is often the case in a Reynolds film. The humor really comes from that innocence and natural bond that seemingly formed between the two.
Taika Waititi
Taika Waititi manages to create undeniable chemistry with most people on screen because of his writing talent and unique sense of humor. Combine that with Ryan Reynolds who has similar skills and some magic was really born in a panned film.
2011’s Green Lantern is considered one of the worst superhero movies of all time, despite the fact that Waititi has made incredible films himself. The bright spot was definitely the dynamic between these two friends though as they managed to make the script work in spite of its flaws. It’s a shame they never shared a screen in Free Guy.
Justice Smith
Justice Smith might not be the first choice when people think about Ryan Reynolds co-stars as not everyone associates Reynolds with Detective Pikachu despite him voicing the titular lead. However, it’s not easy to bounce off of someone with only voice-over work.
Justice Smith allows the impossible to seem easy, as he masters the ability to talk to a character that isn’t there and even build a believable bond with him. The film largely works because of that chemistry, which comes into play in the final act twist.
Blake Lively
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds starred alongside one another in Green Lantern as romantic partners and both of their lives were changed after that meeting. The chemistry between the two was superb and helped to save the film from being considered a total disaster.
This was of course the way the pair really met and bonded before they would eventually get married. On-screen there’s definitely magic happening, with the performances becoming something that simply couldn’t be faked. This is by far the best partnership Reynolds has ever had on or off-screen.
