10 Actors That Spoofed Their Past Roles In Psych

Over its eight-season run, Psych had more than a few guest stars. The show is well-known for its constant movie references, so it makes perfect sense that many of these guest stars spoofed their past roles.

Whether it is a direct parody or a guest star is featured in an episode similar to a movie they were in, there is plenty of side-splitting spoof found in the show. From Christopher Lloyd referencing Clue to Brad Dourif spoofing one of his earliest roles, there are tons of references hidden in Shawn and Gus’ many adventures.

Christopher Lloyd

The one-hundredth episode of the series was named 100 Clues. The episode was the fifth in the seventh season and was a send-up to Clue. Like that movie, the plot revolves around a group of people trapped in a mansion with an unknown murderer. Clue featured a colorful cast of characters, including Christopher Lloyd. Lloyd portrayed Professor Plum in that movie and returned as a writer in the Psych parody.

Psych is no stranger to big-name guest stars, but Lloyd is one of the most shocking, as he was a huge pop culture icon thanks to the success of films such as Back to the Future and The Addams Family. Clue is a cult classic, and one that many people may not know is being remade as well.

Martin Mull

Lloyd was one of three actors spoofing their Clue roles in 100 Clues, one of the others being Martin Mull. Mull originally played Colonial Mustard, but plays a character named Highway Harry in Psych. Harry was the band manager who spent the entire episode drunk. Harry’s lines were so slurred they couldn’t be deciphered, adding to hilarious results.

So drunk was the character, he was believed to have died early in the episode, only for it to be revealed he had simply passed out. Highway Harry has little in common with Clue’s Mustard, which in many ways is part of the joke. Clue has been named as one of the best movies based on a kid’s game, and with a cast including the likes of Mull, it is easy to see why.

Lesley Ann Warren

The third and final Clue performer to make an appearance was Lesley Ann Warren. Warren played Ms. Scarlett in Clue, and a band groupie conveniently named Leslie. Warren’s character is closest to her film counterpart from 1985, as both are portrayed as sultry and proud of it.

Leslie has connections to almost everyone in the mansion, again very similar to Ms. Scarlett. While Warren was the last Clue cast member to return, there was a tribute to Madeline Khan in the credits, who passed away in 1999. Tim Curry also appeared in Clue, as well as being one of the best Psych guest stars in the first season, although his role was not connected to his former role.

Corey Feldman

The third episode of the sixth season was titled This Episode Sucks and unsurprisingly involved Shawn and Gus investigating a supposed vampire. In one of the shortest guest roles in the series, save for Val Kilmer in the finale, Corey Feldman briefly appears in a cameo. The former child actor appears as a bartender in a vampire-themed bar that Shawn, Jules, and Gus question. Feldman’s role is clearly a callback to his role in the vampire classic, The Lost Boys.

While his appearance isn’t a direct spoof when he first appears the theme to the movie plays, and when he is pretending to be a vampire he is acting in a very maco manner, not unlike his role as Edgar Frog in the vampire comedy.

Kristy Swanson

Another performer who was no stranger to vampire films in This Episode Sucks was Kristy Swanson. Some people may not realize the popular Buffy the Vampire Slayer series was actually based on a movie of the same name. Swanson portrayed the titular vampire slayer on the big screen five years before Sarah Michelle Gellar did on television. Unlike Feldman, Swanson had a much larger role in the episode and even went on to have a recurring role.

Kristy plays Marlowe, a woman who is stealing blood for her brother. Marlowe becomes one of the most important characters in later seasons, as she wins the affection of Carlton Lassiter and started a family with him. It’s funny to think such a beloved character started out as essentially a joke guest spot.

Dana Ashbrook

Dual Spires was the twelfth episode of the fifth season, and as the title implies is a parody of Twin Peaks. From over-the-top acting to sappy music, there are tons of references to the popular mystery show, and of course, there are plenty of familiar faces. One of which is Dana Ashbrook, Bobby in Twin Peaks, and Bob Barker.

Despite the name being a clear in-joke, Ashbrook’s two characters couldn’t be further from one another in terms of personality. Bob is a kind man who along with his wife, takes in their niece who goes missing. Bobby was one of the fan-favorite characters on the show, so seeing Dana return was a treat to fans.

Lenny von Dohlen

Lenny von Dohlen’s role on Twin Peaks wasn’t the largest, but in Psych, he plays the sheriff of Dual Spires. Twin Peak’s sheriff, played by Michael Ontkean, was named after President Harry Truman, while in Dual Spires the sheriff’s name is also based on a president, Andrew Jackson.

It is nice for fans of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s show to see Dohlen in a larger role in a Twin Peaks-esque setting. Sherrif Jackson acts similar to Truman, as they are both inviting and helpful to the visiting investigators.

Sherilyn Fenn

Sherilyn Fenn was fan favorite Audrey Horne, a character who has some interesting hidden details, in Twin Peaks. Her appearance in the Psych parody is much smaller, but fans were still excited to see her. Fenn plays Maudette, a librarian who helps out Shawn and Gus, and who is more than a little flirtatious.

While Audrey’s fate is still incredibly ambiguous, Maudette’s is very obvious and a bit unfortunate. Fenn only appears a few times in the episode, but every time she appears fans are reminded of Twin Peaks, as she acts very similar to Audrey in the role.

Sheryl Lee

There are several other Twin Peaks alum who appear in the episode such as Ray Wise and Catherine E. Coulson, the last guest star who laid a major part in the episode was Laura Palmer herself, Sheryl Lee. Laura Palmer was the driving force behind Twin Peaks, as her death was what set the entire series in motion. In Psych, she is Dr. Donna Gooden, whose name is a reference to Lara Flynn Boyle’s character in the original show.

Because Laura was arguably the most important and one of the most likable characters in Twin Peaks, so her actress appearing in this loving parody was fitting and welcoming. Donna Gooden isn’t nearly as tragic as Laura, but she is a fun and sinister addition to the episode, that merges two fantastic shows.

Brad Dourif

Brad Dourif’s most famous role is probably legendary killer doll Chucky in the Child’s Play franchise, but one of his first and arguably best performed is as Billy Bibbit in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. 24 at the time, Dourif gives a tragic performance in the drama based in a mental institution and spoofs it beautifully in Psych. Dourif appears in the sixth episode of the sixth season, Shawn Interrupted.

The episode of course takes place in a mental institution as Shawn goes undercover to prove Dourif’s character, Bernie Bethel, is innocent. Bethel is a millionaire who is declared insane and acts as such throughout the episode. A majority of Dourif’s roles in recent years are meant to be creepy in some way, so it is nice to see him return to a more innocent role reminiscent of one of his earlier films.
