10 Anime Heroes and Their Pokémon Counterparts

The years go by and the Pokémon franchise stays strong sporting 898 Pokémon in its roster which is a great leap from the franchise’s original 152. With so many Pokémon abound, there is no doubt that many Pokémon are likely to have a heroic counterpart somewhere out there in the world of anime.

And they do — whether these Pokémon were based on their anime counterparts or vice versa, it is hard to tell, yet, the following anime heroes fit their Pokémon counterparts so well it may make some fans wonder.

10 Mikoto Misaka is Pikachu

10 Anime Heroes and Their Pokémon Counterparts

Cute, strong-willed, and willing to shock any who oppose them, Mikoto Misaka from the anime A Certain Scientific Railgun and Pikachu are so alike it’s scary. Both characters are quick to make friends, Misaka seems to be constantly adding to her list of reliable and often highly-skilled associates, and no ’90s kid will ever forget Pikachu’s solo adventures. They are also quick to protect these friends and even share similar abilities outside of electricity as Misaka sometimes sports an iron sand sword which, in many ways, is akin to Pikachu’s Iron Tail ability. If these two characters were any more similar, Misaka would need to dye her hair yellow and spike it.

9 Inuyasha is Absol

10 Anime Heroes and Their Pokémon Counterparts

Absol is a dog Pokémon, has an ability called Razor Wind which he shoots from the blade on his head, and he’s a dark type who is often misunderstood by villagers thinking he brings catastrophe. Inuyasha, from the anime Inuyasha, is a dog demon with the ability to project an attack from his sword called the Wind Scar and is feared by the people in the village he was trapped near because of a misunderstanding. Absol even gets himself caught by a girl in the show much like Inuyasha is bound to Kagome; maybe it’s the white hair they both share.

8 Shinra Kusakabe is Blazikan

10 Anime Heroes and Their Pokémon Counterparts

Shinra, the main protagonist of Fire Force, uses a combination of martial arts and his 3rd generation fire powers to kick and burn enemies into submission. While lacking the dark past and ability to use his flames to fly, Blazikan is a fighting and fire-type Pokémon who uses his legs more than his arms thus matching Shinra’s fighting style almost perfectly. Yet, even though Blazikan lacks the ability to fly, he still is able to match Shinra’s mobility because, as stated in his Pokedex description, he can clear a 30-story building with one leap.

7 Ryūko Matoi is Scissor

10 Anime Heroes and Their Pokémon Counterparts

Ryūko Matoi, the main protagonist of Kill La Kill, is fierce and, much like her counterparts steel armor, unbending and stubborn. Scissor also shares Ryūko’s fierceness as the eyes on his claws are meant to intimidate his opponents in battle.

Yet, their greatest similarities lie in their fighting styles and abilities. The nature of both character’s bodies makes them as hard or harder than steel, easily repelling the majority of attacks. They can both fly and expertly put their scissor-like blades to use to shred opponents.

6 Shigeo Kageyama is Mew

10 Anime Heroes and Their Pokémon Counterparts

Shigeo from Mob Psycho is a young boy with insane psychic abilities who is unbelievably innocent and naïve when it comes to interacting with the everyday world yet he understands far more about what is going on around him than many of the characters in the anime give him credit for. Mew, while not as naïve as Shigeo seems to be, also has unbelievable psychic powers and is dripping with innocence. Mew is often seen bouncing around on psychic bubbles, much like a child enjoying every second of life, yet, just like Shigeo, when a battle comes his way, Mew is a force to be reckoned with.

5 Kurama is Roserade

10 Anime Heroes and Their Pokémon Counterparts

Poised, elegant, and looking fancy, Roserade and Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho share many traits. As a grass type and poison-type Pokémon, Roserade often lures in unsuspecting Pokémon before lashing out with thorn rose whips. Roserade is also adept at using various kinds of poisons to down its enemies. Kurama fights in much the same way, often using deception and manipulation to his advantage to lure enemies into a plant-based trap while using his rose whip to keep enemies from attacking directly.

4 Black Leg Sanji is Hitmonlee

10 Anime Heroes and Their Pokémon Counterparts

Sanji, one of the Strawhat pirates from One Piece, is a martial artist who relies only on his legs in battle. He is unbelievably fast as well as mobile and has a great love for beautiful women and cooking food. Hitmonlee, while lacking in the cooking and beautiful women department, shares Sanji’s fighting style preferring to use his legs over his fists in battle. Hitmonlee has said to be able to harden his foot to shatter an enemy’s defenses, much like Sanji’s use of armament haki, and has stretchy legs which greatly increase his mobility and speed.

3 Katsuki Bakugou is Charizard

10 Anime Heroes and Their Pokémon Counterparts

Arrogance and rashness define the personality of both Charizard and Bokugo from My Hero Academia. Charizard is often seen ignoring Ash’s commands. He doesn’t like being told what to do but will instantly pick a fight, as seen in Pokemon: The First Movie, with any who anger or challenge him. Bakugo shows the exact same traits.

He knows he is stronger than the majority of his classmates and often rushes into battle alone regardless of what his team says. He quickly angers when he thinks he’s being underestimated or if someone he believes is weaker than him thinks to challenge him. Add these personality traits with each character’s fiery fighting style mixing physical strength and skill with explosive attacks and any fan can see that Bakugo is basically Charizard in human form.

2 Ri Shin is Tauros

10 Anime Heroes and Their Pokémon Counterparts

Ri Shin from the anime Kingdom is a simple yet passionate boy who overwhelmed his opponents in battle with ferocity. He often gets himself psyched up before battle and prefers direct charges to sneaky plans more often than not. Tauros is a bull-like Pokémon and is a normal type, meaning he relies on brute strength more than any sort of special ability in combat, much like Shin. Tauros will use his three tails to whip himself into a frenzy before charging headlong at any enemy, yet this frenzied state helps to provide him with the extra strength needed to take down foes.

1 Rukia Kuchiki is Glaceon

Rukia is a soul reaper and one of the main protagonists from Bleach. While she is more than proficient with a blade, her true strength stems from her use of Kido or energy-based attacks. Her Zanpakuto, when released, is an ice-type that freezes enemies to death in several unique fashions. When released, her Zanpakuto chills the air around her often creating snow. Glaceon is an ice-type Pokémon that also relies on non-physical attacks as she boasts a high special attack stat. This Pokémon is small, quick, and nimble, much like Rukia herself, and uses her body temperature to unleash ice attacks and freeze her enemies. Glaceon has even been said to be able to freeze solid any who get distracted by the beauty of her snow, thus making her a perfect counterpart for the soul reaper said to have the most beautiful Zanpakuto in the Soul Society.
