Very few musicals from the past decade can brag about having achieved the same level of success as The Greatest Showman. It grossed over $400 million worldwide, against an $84 million budget. But then again, with an all-star cast, colorful outfits, and breathtaking musical numbers, what’s not to love?

A lot of work went into the production of such an epic movie. 10 Hugh Jackman Did His Homework

P.T. Barnum was a real-life person with a knack for showbusiness that was pretty much unprecedented in America at the time. So in order to prepare for the role, actor Hugh Jackman had to put a lot of work in.

This included reading dozens of books about Barnum, long hours of dance rehearsals, and singing – lots and lots of singing! When asked what was the hardest movie to prepare for compared to Logan, Jackman actually said it was hands down The Greatest Showman. That should tell you something!

9 The Hidden Voice

As the epic musical that it is, The Greatest Showman has no shortage of incredible original songs. And one of the most beautiful among them is “Never Enough”, performed in the movie by actress Rebecca Ferguson. Or is it?

While Ferguson is the actress who plays the role of Jenny Lind, it was singer Loren Allred that sang the song. This is due to the fact that Lind is supposed to be one of the greatest singers alive. And while Ferguson doesn’t lack talent, it was deemed more fitting that an experienced singer would lend their voice.

8 Costumes Straight From The Source

The Greatest Showman can be quite an overwhelming experience, in the best way possible. There are so many colors and dances and glitter that your eyes don’t even know what to focus on for longer than five seconds. One of the aspects that more quickly draws the eye are the stunning costumes.

And curiously enough, they came straight from the source. They were borrowed from Feld Entertainment, the current owners of Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

7 Nine Years In The Making

Hugh Jackman wanted to make this movie happen for several years. And even though it finally reached the audiences in 2017, it was in the works since 2009 – over a decade ago.

This is mostly due to the fact that studios were reluctant to invest in an original musical. And given that prior to The Greatest Showman not many movies of the genre found success, it’s easy to understand the unwillingness.

6 Broken Stitches

Jackman went all out when the time came to film the movie. Not only did he do extensive research and go through the grueling process of rehearsing, but he also went as far as willingly injuring himself.

The actor had to undergo surgery on his nose prior to shooting the movie, and was advised not to sing due to the extensive number of stitches. He went against the orders for the song “From Now On”, and found out he had a nose bleed by the end of it

5 Upbeat Style

There are not enough words in the world to praise the mastery behind all the original songs written for the movie. The people behind it, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, were actually the lyricists for La La Land.

When working on The Greatest Showman, they deliberately chose to go with an upbeat style that didn’t match the era the movie was set on in order to emphasize just how ahead of the times Barnum was.

4 Swedish Nightingale

Like many other characters featured in the movie, Jenny Lind is based on a real-life performer. And even though her relationship with Barnum greatly differed from what is portrayed, some things remain the same.

One of those aspects is the fact that Lind is Swedish-born. And even though the part was written with Anne Hathaway in mind, it ended up going to Rebecca Ferguson – a Swedish actress herself.

3 Tattoos? Not Quite

One of the many unique individuals that make up P.T Barnum’s circus is the Tattoo Man. Once again, the person the character is based on, George Costentenus, actually had over 300 tattoos covering his body. The actor who plays them, though, does not. George Costentenus actually doesn’t have a single tattoo!

2 Fire! Fire!

The climax of the movie comes when the circus accidentally catches fire and ends up burning completely. An unfortunate accident actually took place during filming when the staged fire got out of control. Thankfully, nobody was injured, but it was thanks to five retired firemen working as extras that things didn’t escalate too much.

1 This Is Me

It’s already an established fact that the movie took years to be green-lit due to the fact that no one was willing to take a chance on an original musical.

What finally convinced 20th Century Fox to give it a go was the song “This Is Me”, the anthem of the movie that would go on to earn an Oscar nomination. And best of all? Pasek and Paul wrote it in two hours while flying out to the studio.
