Two years after the series stopped airing on FOX network, ABC revived American Idol for its 16th season. With American Idol Season 20 scheduled to be released in just a few short months, auditions have already begun. Fans are excited to see what new talent will emerge on national television, as has happened so many times before.
Some of the most memorable performances happen before contestants even make it to Hollywood. Although not every great audition makes it all the way, certain auditions from Seasons 16-19 still stand out among the rest.
Margie Mays
Season 17’s Margie Mays left her mark on judges and audiences. It took her a moment to find her groove, but once she did, her performance was entertaining and the song was enjoyable.
Some may side with Lionel Richie’s vote of “no” due to her unusually high energy. However, as soon as the song ended Katy Perry called Margie “literally a star.” Her song of choice was also fitting for a singing competition show, given she sang the lyrics, “do I have a shot?” from “Shot” by Lawrence. Not only was it one of the funniest American Idol auditions to watch, it was also a job well done.
Ronda Felton
In Season 19, Ronda Felton brought Lionel Richie to tears with “One Night Only” by Tom Eyen and Henry Krieger. Lionel predicted it would a life-changing moment for Ronda.
Although she didn’t make it to live shows, she presented herself as a serious threat to her competition. Katy Perry told her, “You just gotta be Ronda, and that will take you all the way.” Ronda showed amazing talent and potential in her first audition. She sounded really great in what was one of the most moving auditions yet.
Madison VanDenburg
Madison VanDenburgh was called “as good as Kelly Clarkson” by Katy Perry during her Season 17 audition. She sang “Speechless” by Dan + Shay, and that’s exactly what the judges were.
Madison played the piano while singing along, both of which she does extremely well. Thanks to this audition, Madison is notably the first contestant to give Katy Perry goosebumps. The judges agreed that she’s a massive star. Her great audition was just the start of a great journey, seeing as she placed third that season.
Jurnee
Jurnee hit every note when she sang “Rise Up” by Andra Day in her Season 16 audition. Although Katy Perry wanted to see more physicality out of Jurnee, she couldn’t deny that Jurnee sings “so effortlessly.”
Fans and judges alike buzzed about Jurnee. Lionel Richie said he was “amazed.” He and Katy both agreed when Luke Bryan said Jurnee might be “the best they’ve ever heard” at that point in the contest. She went all the way to the Top 7 during her season of Idol.
Francisco Martin
Francisco Martin sang “Alaska” by Maggie Rogers in his Season 18 audition. Luke called him a future superstar. Maggie Rogers herself even tweeted her compliments of the audition.
Katy Perry correctly predicted that he’d be Top 10, Luke upped the ante by correctly predicting Top 5. Francisco quickly became a fan favorite, advancing through each week. He went on to release an EP. He is also headlining a nine-city tour on which other American Idol contestants are opening for him.
Jonny West
Jonny West performed an original song on the piano, during which he started rapping after some impressive vocals. It was immediately evident he is a skilled songwriter, pianist, singer, and rapper during this Season 18 audition.
Katy Perry said his performance was pro and his sound was “pleasing to the ear.” His is an American Idol audition that viewers love to watch over and over. Furthermore, he left the judges and fans talking about him long after he had left the room. Jonny West made it to the Top 5 that season.
Michael J. Woodard
Contestant Michael J. Woodard had an especially good audition in Season 16. He sang “Make It Rain” by Foy Vance.
His performance was so top notch, Lionel Richie dismissed his lack of experience as irrelevant. The judges took a liking to him and his positive energy right off the bat. Michael fell just short of making it to the final 3 of his season. He has seen much success since American Idol. Like other American Idol alumni who are also starring in movies, Woodard went on to play the lead role of Arlo in Netflix’s Arlo the Alligator Boy.
Just Sam
Just Sam stole America’s heart during her Season 18 audition. Her courageous story of overcoming bullying is a prime example of a time that American Idol tackled deep issues. Just Sam took a moment to prepare for the audition. She was filled with emotions and was fighting to make it through her first song choice.
After some encouragement and finding her comfort zone, she really made a connection with the judges and viewers with “Rise Up” by Andra Day. Katy Perry looked inspired as Just Sam sang. Afterward, Lionel Richie told her to “forget about winning” because she’d “already won.” Sure enough, he was right in more ways than one, because Just Sam went on to be the winner of Season 18.
Casey Bishop
When fans and judges met Casey Bishop in Season 19, all were blown away by her talent. Though she was asked to perform a second song, as Katy Perry pointed out, her audition was “really, really, really good.”
Only 15 years old at the time of her audition, Casey sang as if she had been doing so for several lifetimes. Lionel told her that the “sky is the limit.” Luke Bryan believed at the time that she would go on to win that season. While Luke’s prediction wasn’t spot on, Casey did make it all the way to fourth place.
Alejandro Aranda
After Alejandro Aranda’s Season 17 audition with his original song called “Out Loud,” the judges concluded that there’s nothing like it. The competition hasn’t been the same since.
In a mind-blowing performance, Alejandro shredded up his guitar in a way that few have heard before. His singing was phenomenal, and he truly shined as a songwriter and lyricist. Lionel Richie attempted to describe it with “that was the greatest…” but then couldn’t find the words. Luke Bryan said “I feel like I’m in the presence of greatness. It was like watching my favorite movie that I did not want to end.” Alejandro has set the standard for what an audition should be on American Idol. Judges have gone on to mention this audition every season that followed, comparing other remarkable auditions to Alejandro’s.
