Call of Duty has been a mainstay in the world of first-person shooters for quite some time and continues to entice fans with exciting multiplayer features every year. Though it started out as something of an afterthought, the multiplayer mode eventually became the series’ main selling point, and there have been hundreds of maps introduced throughout the franchise’s nearly twenty-decade run.
Although many of the maps are remastered or altered versions of maps in previous games, the number of new maps in each new CoD iteration is one of the many things that keeps players coming back year after year. With a game as popular as the Call of Duty franchise, there are numerous maps that hold a special place in gamers’ hearts, no matter how old or new the map is. Lots of maps fall into the good-but-forgettable category, but only a select few have become legendary among fans.
10 Terminal (Modern Warfare 2)
One of the most popular maps in one of the most iconic installments in the franchise, fans who have played the game as far back as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will have fond memories of the gameplay on this air travel-themed map.
With various ranges of engagement, several crucial chokepointgs, and tons of ways to flank enemies, the map was the perfect complement to the game’s quick gameplay. The map was remade for Modern Warfare 3 as DLC, and it also features as in the Warzone map Verdansk.
9 Nuketown (Black Ops)
Some of the most iconic and popular maps are also some of the smallest in the franchise. For years, the developers of Call of Duty’s multiplayer have made a tradition over including at least one map that is significantly smaller than 0ther maps in the game.
In Call of Duty Black Ops, this took the form of Nuketown. It’s complete with hectic, ultra-fast gameplay with just enough space to make battles a bit more dynamic, and the map has one of the coolest aesthetics of any Call of Duty multiplayer arena. The map has been remastered in multiple Black Ops installments since its first appearance.
8 Strike (Modern Warfare)
Yet another iconic map from the earlier years of Call of Duty, this oppressively brown and gray map may seem unassuming at first, but it has some of the smoothest gameplay in the franchise. Short, medium, and long-range engagements are abundant in this Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare map, and, despite the map’s lackluster visual appeal the gameplay is so fun taht it’s easy to overlook.
While many maps excel more in certain game modes, Strike lends itself to virtually every possible game mode available on the map.
7 Favela (Modern Warfare 2)
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has one of the best campaigns in the franchise, and its multiplayer is, in the minds of many fans, still the gold standard for many players when it comes to Call of Duty, so it makes sense that it features multiple maps that are fan favorites.
Favela was based on a mission from the campaign mode and features a slum that is built on a slope, allowing for a unique dynamic where elevation is key to domination. The map also has tons of paths to flank and catch enemies off-guard, making it difficult but all the more important for teams to hold certain chokepoints.
6 Hijacked (Black Ops 2)
With many maps in Call of Duty being virtually indistinguishable from each other, it is the maps that have unique settings that seem to stand out the most. This could not be more true with Hijacked, a map that takes place on a moving superyacht.
Small and with several tunnels to catch enemies off guard, the action on this map is non-stop, but it’s not so fast-paced that it gets to be frustrating. Although sub-machine guns seem to excel, almost every weapon in the game is a viable option for this map.
5 Summit (Black Ops)
Snowy locations aren’t the most common of settings for Call of Duty maps, and many fans find some of the snow maps to have poor visibility. However, Summit balances this by having most of the map take place indoors or at least mostly indoors.
The result is a visually pleasing map that takes full advantage of the classic Call of Duty 3-lane-map structure. The map also goes well with the slightly slower and assault rifle-heavy gameplay of the first Black Ops game. Although Black Ops may be better remembered for its elaborate zombies game mode, its multiplayer is still one of the best.
4 Highrise (Modern Warfare 2)
Another map that was so popular that it was deemed worthy of a remake, the Modern Warfare 2 map is another masterpiece of in-game flow, featuring numerous elements that make it unique. The map takes place on a top of a highrise building that is still under construction, adding an interesting element of possibly falling off the map if players aren’t careful.
There are also the multiple cranes and construction equipment that provide interesting vantage points over the entire map should a player be brave enough to attempt the climb.
3 Shipment (Modern Warfare)
Small maps are almost always popular, and maps simply do not get smaller than Shipment. Featured first in Call of Duty 4 and again in WWII and Call of Duty Modern Warfare (2019), the map is utter chaos. Players often can’t take more than several steps without getting shot, being killed by a grenade, being blown up by an RPG, or getting eighty-sixed by a sudden melee attack from someone that came around the corner.
Tactics go out the window in this map, making it a favorite amongst those working on weapon camos and any other leveling they need to do. While it’s not the best for 6v6, Rust would have made a better Modern Warfare gunfight map rather than one in the regular rotation.
2 Raid (Black Ops 2)
Call of Duty Black Ops 2 wasn’t quite as popular as the first installment, but the multiplayer was still tons of fun and extremely well balanced. Raid is easily the standout on the game among the on-disc multiplayer maps, and it stands as one of the most well-designed arenas in Black Ops 2.
Perfect for any game mode from Demolition to Search and Destroy or even the go-to Team Deathmatch, the map has tons of paths players can take to flank and almost nowhere to hide, making camping less viable than it would normally be.
1 Rust (Modern Warfare 2)
Easily the most iconic map in the history of the game, Rust is one of the strangest maps in any Modern Warfare game. Extremely small and with a massive tower right in the middle, the map is fun for fans of ultra-fast-paced gameplay, but it truly shines in one one-on-one games.
Anyone that has played Modern Warfare 2 has had at least one intense one-on-one match on the iconic map. Small enough to force engagements between players but big enough to keep things interesting, the map served as the ultimate arena for settling scores between enraged Xbox Live lobby members.
