Pokémon Legends Arceus Trailer Plot Release Date & News to Know

The Pokémon Company surprised fans when, during its 25th anniversary livestream, it announced two new games set in the Sinnoh region. While gamers long assumed that remakes of the Generation IV games Diamond and Pearl were in the works, the reveal of Pokémon Legends: Arceus was shocking. This will be a Pokémon game unlike any other with a setting and gameplay elements unlike anything that the franchise has tried before.

As the game’s release date approaches, Game Freak is showing off more of its next Pokémon game. While there are still a lot of questions and mysteries surrounding it, what has been shown so far is exciting. Here is everything we currently know about Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus Trailer

Pokémon Legends: Arceus was revealed in a trailer that debuted during February’s Pokémon Presents. Unlike many other reveal trailers, this actually gives a decent look at the game itself. While some have pointed out technical issues in the trailer and expressed concerns about how the game will run on Nintendo Switch, it’s important to keep in mind that this is early footage from a year before the game’s launch. It’s safe to say the final product will be at least a bit more polished.

A more in-depth look at the game was provided in the next trailer, which starts out by saying the game is set in “a time long ago when the lives of humans and Pokémon were still separate.” It then shows a variety of wide open natural environments inhabited by Pokémon, as well as a human settlement. We see the player character sneaking through the grass and throwing Poké Balls to catch or battle wild Pokémon. It also shows the trainer using different never-before-seen Pokémon to travel the sky, water and land.

Then, the trailer shows an explosion and various Pokémon’s eye turning red, with a human (later revealed to be Professor Laventon) calling Pokémon “terrifying creatures.” We see the player character dodging Pokémon attacks, running from danger and (eventually) entering into battles, indicating how the game’s action mechanics will work. The main portion of the trailer ends with the female protagonist reacting as a mysterious glow lifts around her.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ September trailer unveiled a variety of new features including riding Pokémon, new characters called Wardens and powerful, frenzied Noble Pokémon. It also revealed a new creature named Kleavor, the Axe Pokémon, who was later revealed to be a new Bug/Rock-type evolution for Scyther. October saw the tease of new Pokémon, later revealed to be Hisuian forms of Zorua and Zoroark, through a cryptic found footage trailer. The two were fully revealed in another trailer released the following week. Since then, we’ve also seen a Hisuian form for Voltorb and even more hints towards the game’s storyline.

What Pokémon Legends: Arceus Is About

Pokémon Legends Arceus Trailer Plot Release Date & News to Know

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is set in a version of Sinnoh based on feudal Japan called the Hisui region. The player’s goal is to create the region’s first ever Pokédex, and they will be based in Jubilife Village, the place that will become one of Sinnoh’s major cities. They’ll work with the Galaxy Expedition Team, a group made up of people from different regions who work with Pokémon, alongside Professor Laventon. Laventon studies the ecology of Pokémon, and he came to Hisui with Rowlet, Cyndaquil and Oshawott, starter Pokémon that each originated in different regions. These will serve as Legends: Arceus’ starter options.

Cyllene, captain of the Galaxy Team’s Survey Corps is another new character. While she has a gruff attitude, Cyllene is said to be a big support who cares for the player and their progress. There’s also commander Kamado, who oversees the entire Galaxy Team. He is the one who sees the players potential and tasks them with working with the Survey Corps. From there, players will observe and catch Pokémon to learn more about them, completing survey assignments and requests.

The September trailer revealed Wardens, who are said to “protect special Pokémon.” Unlike the characters seen previously, the Wardens are far more comfortable around Pokémon, with one named Mai saying she and her partner Munchlax were “raised together like siblings” and live side-by-side without Poké Balls. One of the player’s assignments from Kamado will be studying a Kleavor, which is under the Warden’s protection and on a rampage.

Pokémon Legends Arceus Trailer Plot Release Date & News to Know

December saw the announcement of even more groups and characters players will encounter on their journeys through Hisui. There are two clans, the Diamond Clan and the Pearl Clan, led by Adaman and Irida, respectively. Though the two are at odds with one another, both seem open to working with the player and the Galaxy Team. Beyond the names’ obvious allusions to the original Generation IV games, the leaders both mention “Almighty Sinnoh,” hinting towards some kind of deity that Hisui will eventually be renamed to honor. The same trailer also revealed the Ginkgo Guild, a group of merchants players will encounter throughout the game.

As for the title Pokémon, little has been said about Arceus’ role in the game outside of the fact that it “holds the key to this story.” The Alpha Pokémon will clearly play a major part in the journey, possibly related to the Pokémon with glowing red eyes (which Arceus has been seen with before) and the golden glow from the end of the trailer, but regardless, it’s clear that players will learn more about the Mythical Pokémon said to have shaped the universe.

What We Know About Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ Gameplay

Pokémon Legends Arceus Trailer Plot Release Date & News to Know

Pokémon Legends: Arceus will be a massive departure from previous main-series Pokémon titles in terms of gameplay. While not a true open-world game on the scale of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, this is an action-RPG with open areas similar to Monster Hunter or Sword and Shield’s Wild Area, Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra. Players will be able to interact with wild Pokémon wandering in the overworld, throwing Poké Balls at the to catch them. Different Pokémon will react to the player in different ways, with some fleeing as soon as they see you, and others needing to be weakened before they can be caught — just like in previous games.

Throwing a Poké Ball containing one of your Pokémon will start a wild battle. These appear to mainly use the turn-based mechanics of the mainline games, though with some twists. There are two new mechanics, Strong Style and Agile Style, that will impact how many times you can move. Strong Style makes attacks hit harder, but they slow a Pokémon down, while Agile attacks are lighter, but could allow a Pokémon to attack multiple times in a row.

Unlike in previous games, the player can be hurt by wild Pokémon while exploring Hisui. The game features stealth mechanics so players can sneak up on Pokémon, but players will also need to dodge attacks. Getting hit will cause the player to black out and send them back to a camp. These camps will also be places where players can buy and craft items before setting off and where they heal.

Noble Pokémon, like newcomer Kleavor, seem to offer challenging boss battles. It looks like these frenzying creatures need to be weakened by throwing something called Forest Balm on them while dodging their powerful attacks, then battling them with your own Pokémon. Hisui will also be home to other new Pokémon and regional variants, some of which are shown to be ridable. Legends: Arceus will get Pokémon HOME support sometime in 2022, indicating that these Pokémon can be stored and may be usable in future games.

As for what players can do between battles, Jublife Village will be a hub where players can do things like buy new outfits, customize their character’s appearance, shop and take photos with their Pokémon. While photography and some of the outfits may seen anachronistic considering Husui’s feudal Japan inspirations, the game takes it a step further with the Arc Phone. This mysterious device with some connection to the Mythical Pokémon Arceus is said to contain “strange power” that will “help guide players on their journey.”

When Will Pokémon Legends: Arceus Release?

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is scheduled to release worldwide on January 28, 2022 for Nintendo Switch, which likely makes it Nintendo’s first major release of 2022. While this is subject to change due to the general uncertainly of the gaming industry and the complications caused by the pandemic, The Pokémon Company has a history of sticking to announced release dates, so there’s a good chance that, if it is saying anything this early, the developers are confident that the game will be ready in time.

October’s trailer fully unveiling Hisuian Zorua and Zoroark also announced several bonuses for those who start the game within the first few months after launch. A Baneful Fox Mask based on Hisuian Zoroark and a Hisuian Growlithe Kimono Set (with versions for male and female trainers) will be available via Mystery Gift until May 9, 2022. Those who purchase the digital version of the game before May 9 will also receive 30 Heavy Balls via code, which will be redeemable until May 16. Additionally, players who have Pokémon Diamond and Shining Pearl save data will have access to a special research request that will allow them to encounter the Mythical Pokémon Darkrai.
