Immediately after Halloween, many people already began preparing for the holiday season by replacing their spooky Jack-o’-lanterns with sparkling Christmas lights and their bowls of candy with plates of gingerbread cookies. As scary movies get replaced with holiday rom-coms, it seems like all fears disappear in the face of seasonal cheer.
But, scares and spooks are not limited to Halloween, and even Christmas can be the backdrop for a frightful tale. Over the years, developers have made some great Christmas horror games that prove the holiday can be the most terrifying time of the year.
Infected
Considered by some to be one of the best PSP horror games, Infected is a 2005 third-person shooter where the the player creates their own character and fights zombies. Three weeks before Christmas, New York City is hit by a zombie virus, and the player is a police officer whose blood is immune. The goal of the game is to run through the snow-filled streets, fight zombies, and find someone who can use the player’s blood to create a cure.
During the introductory cutscene, the game already leans into the seasonal vibe by having a zombie dressed like Santa attack a group of citizens under a Christmas tree. Although the gameplay can be annoying because the player has to use two guns at the same time, it also has the unique aspect of having the player’s own customized avatar “infect” other players.
Thirstiest Time of the Year
Although there are plenty of great Itch.io horror games, none of them are as weirdly funny as Thirstiest Time of the Year, which is a 2018 meme game based on the animated Sprite Cranberry commercial with LeBron James. In this game, the player is left alone at home on Christmas night and hears a knocking at the door, which is revealed to be the cranberry ghost Lakh’broan Jah’mes.
After grabbing some Orange Fanta cans from the kitchen, the player must escape from the cranberry ghost and make it to the gas station. Despite the hilarity and absurdity of the game, it can actually be pretty scary to see “the cranberry ghost” running after the player while singing about the “thirstiest time of the year.”
Lakeview Cabin Collection: Last Christmas
Created as a sequel to the 2013 free flash game Lakeview Cabin, Lakeview Cabin Collection is a 2015 pixel-art survival horror puzzle game where the player has to navigate through several levels based on classic horror films such as The Thing, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Friday the 13th. Each level has its own unique set of items the player can find and use to solve puzzles.
After beating the main levels, there are a couple of smaller levels that are unlocked. In 2017, the Christmas-themed mini-level titled “Last Christmas” was added to the game, which had the player control a father who is trying to protect his child from evil versions of Santa and his reindeer.
Krampusnacht
After the success of the survival horror indie game Faith, it’s no surprise that there are now many more Itch.io horror games with an Atari 2600-inspired 8-bit art style being released. One of the more unique entries in this niche genre is Krampusnacht, which is a survival horror game where the player is a child on the “naughty list” who is being hunted by the ancient demon known as Krampus.
Since Krampus only kills children on the night before the Feast of St. Nicholas, the player must survive the night by exploring, finding items, and solving puzzles. The game’s old school graphics give the experience a certain eerie feeling that modern graphics can’t replicate.
Alone in the Dark: One Eyed Jack’s Revenge
Alone in the Dark is one of the best ’90s horror survival games, and, while not as much of a classic, the 1993 sequel Alone in the Dark: One-Eyed Jack’s Revenge has a unique style to it that makes it stand out on its own. During the game, the player controls the supernatural detective Edward Carnby as he tries to find a girl named Grace Saunders who has been kidnapped by a group of immortal pirates.
Instead of the horror and exploration focus of the first game, this sequel has a sillier plot and a stronger combat focus. Since the game takes place on Christmas, there are many Christmas-related props and the player can wear a Santa outfit.
Tattletail
Released in 2016, Tattletail is a survival horror game where the player decides to open their Christmas present several days early and discovers that they have received a Baby Talking Tattletail, which is the popular new life-like toy. But, similarly to the urban legends surrounding the real-life Furby toys, there ends up being more to the Tattletail toy-line than just being fun toys.
Although the Tattletail toy is harmless on its own, it makes a lot of noise when it is not getting enough rest, grooming, and food. This noise alerts Mama Tattletail, which is an evil precursor to the current Tattletail toys. Throughout the five nights leading up to Christmas, the player must avoid Mama, complete objectives, and survive.
Blue Stinger
One of the best forgotten games on the Sega Dreamcast console is the 1999 action survival horror Blue Stinger, which follows Emergency Sea Evacuation and Rescue officer Eliot Ballade as he gets trapped on Dinosaur Island at Christmas. While exploring the island with a mysterious fairy-like creature named Nephilim, Eliot meets several other characters and battles mutated monsters.
As the characters fight the dangerous creatures and slowly uncover the truth about the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs, the player is surrounded by Christmas decorations in the background. This holiday cheer feels strange to see while killing monsters.
Slay Bells
With the success of the indie developer Puppet Combo’s PS1-styled horror games, other indie developers have followed and created their own takes on the idea. One of these developers is Blake McKinnon Productions on Itch.io who has recently created Slay Bells, which is a PS1-styled horror where the player is being chased by a serial killer dressed as Santa.
While avoiding the axe-wielding Santa Claus, the player navigates the city streets and tries to get back home on Christmas Eve. Though the game is fairly short, players will find themselves being actually terrified of Mr. Claus.
Christmas Massacre
Speaking of Puppet Combo, the influential game developer recently released a new game this year called Christmas Massacre. The game follows a man named Larry who is being told by his sentient Christmas Tree to kill people, and the player accomplishes this by going through several levels and killing the NPCs.
Larry is originally from Puppet Combo’s previous game Blood Maniac, and the school level is the same as the one in Puppet Combo’s Nun Massacre. Although the developer had made another Christmas horror game in 2018 titled Planet of Bloodthirsty Santa, this new game is a much more polished experience.
Parasite Eve
Created as a sequel to the award-winning 1995 novel of the same name, Parasite Eve is a 1998 action JRPG science-fiction horror about a New York City police officer named Aya Brea who witnesses an audience of people spontaneously combust during an opera performance on Christmas Eve. Over the course of the game, Aya fights various mutated creatures as she tries to figure out what is happening to people, why she is unaffected, and what the mysterious creature known as “Eve” is.
This game is significant for contributing to the resurgence of popularity for Japanese horror and was also the first SquareSoft game to be rated Mature. The game’s setting was originally supposed to be the setting for Final Fantasy VII but was changed during development.
