10 Best Comics Accurate Costumes Ranked

The mysterious Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to feature many updated looks for many iconic characters from the 3 generations of Spidey movies. Not only are memorable villains like Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus set to return, but Tom Holland Spider-Man’s set to gain a new suit or two in this upcoming picture.

The costume of these characters is a huge part of bringing these characters to the big screen. Coming from comic books, many of these characters have iconic looks audiences have grown to associate with them. When the costume department creates a suit that honors its source material, fans see it as a satisfying moment for the character; a reference to their original medium. Comic accurate costumes are quite the fan-favorite, and there have been many over the years.

10 Scott Pilgrim (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World)

10 Best Comics Accurate Costumes Ranked

Scott Pilgrim vs The World is a film that honors its source material. The titular protagonist Scott Pilgrim is seen wearing his big coat, orange t-shirt, outfit from the graphic novels along with his wristbands and beat-up sneakers.

The entire movie features many references to the original graphic novels such as monomania or shot for shot panel recreation. Many of the costumes can be seen in both mediums, it’s no surprise that this outfit is quite accurate. But this suit is also featured on the many versions of the cover for Vol. 1; making it quite possibly the definitive Scott Pilgrim look.

9 Steve Rogers USO Suit (Captain America: The First Avenger)

10 Best Comics Accurate Costumes Ranked

The USO suit Steve Rogers wore in Captain America: The First Avenger, while made specifically for his on-stage performances, bears a striking resemblance to the suit featured in his comic debut in 1941.

The suit serves as an homage to the character’s roots. It looks cheap and made of soft spandex material, similar to the art found in the comic; but it wouldn’t serve much protection in active combat. Rogers ditches it for a more militarized combat suit but it maintains the patriotic aesthetic.

8 Batman (Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice)

10 Best Comics Accurate Costumes Ranked

Ben Affleck’s Batman first debuted in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice; portrayed as an older Batman with a predominately grey suit with a black bat on the chest. This version of the character shares similarities to The Dark Knight Returns comic, from the suit to an older Bruce Wayne.

Zack Snyder’s DCEU films are known for their more grounded takes on DC’s iconic heroes. The Batman found in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns is a gritty Batman in a gritty world, a character archetype at home with Snyder’s tone of storytelling. Affleck himself fits the build and age for this version of the character as well.

7 John Walker US Agent (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier)

10 Best Comics Accurate Costumes Ranked

John Walker spends most of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier as the current Captain America but in his final appearance in the series, he gains his U.S. Agent suit. While his chrome shield may be missing, the suit itself features the now-classic black suit with horizontal red and white stripes.

As stated before, Walker spends most of the time in his Cap outfit, which while not comic accurate (he just used a Rogers suit), sports a design with red stripes across the chest and a star on the right of his chest. Even from his first appearance in the series, the Captain America suit teases his future as the U.S. agent, making his eventual debut in the role all the more satisfying.

6 Sandman (Spider-Man 3)

10 Best Comics Accurate Costumes Ranked

Sandman’s first live-action debut came in Spider-Man 3, where he wore the classic green-striped t-shirt and had his visually impressive sand powers. Not only was he wearing his iconic comic costume, but his sand manipulation is portrayed with incredible special effects that still hold up to this day.

Rami, throughout his trilogy, used many villains from the early days of Spider-Man such as Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus but their film costumes were a departure from the original comics. Sandman is a special case, in which the costume is a 1 to 1 replication from the comics.

5 Wanda Maximoff (WandaVision)

10 Best Comics Accurate Costumes Ranked

The Halloween episode of WandaVision sees Wanda Maximoff wear a red bodysuit and gloves with pink tights as a Halloween costume. Along with the headpiece, the outfit resembles her debut outfit from 1964. The material features little detail or texture much like the art style of the era.

Later on in the series, Wanda officially becomes the Scarlet Witch; the culmination of her story in the MCU so far. This costume serves as a nod to her comic origins while also hinting at her eventually power up. Being such an important moment for the character, the homage to her roots as the comic Scarlet Witch serves as the first step in the mutant story in the MCU.

4 Barry Allen (The Flash)

10 Best Comics Accurate Costumes Ranked

The Flash gains a new suit for his 8th season, sporting red fabric clothlike fabric with gold dealing lines running throughout similar to the one from season 7. But this suit gains an addition long-awaited by fans: the gold boots.

Throughout the many seasons of the Flash, the suit has evolved with each iteration; becoming more and more like the suit of the comics. From maroon leather to red spandex, all that seemed to be missing was the gold boots. During DC FanDome 2020, showrunner Eric Wallace commented on the (then) future inclusion of the boots, stating “They must be earned.” Lo and behold, come season 8, the 5 part Armageddon event will see the Flash with the new boots, and fans wait to see how he will earn the iconic footwear.

3 Superman (Crisis on Infinite Earths)

10 Best Comics Accurate Costumes Ranked

The Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths television event presented many fan service moments for DC’s many live-action franchises. One such moment was the appearance of Brandon Routh as Superman wearing the Kingdom Come Suit. With its deep blue and red-and-black crest, it harkens the art of Alex Ross.

The last time Routh portrayed the Man of Steel was in Superman Returns, which is a loose continuation of Christopher Reeves’s version of the character from 1978. Kingdom Come features an older Superman, much like the Routh/Reeves version. The material and design of the suit share many similarities to the Reeves suit; making it clear this is at least an homage to the extensive history of this particular iteration of Superman

2 Sam Wilson (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier)

10 Best Comics Accurate Costumes Ranked

Sam Wilson flies into New York during the finale of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier with his brand new Captain America suit. The suit features the white headpiece and red goggles as well as smaller details such as the red gloves and kneepads.

Since his introduction in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson has worn suits that are quite the departure from his suit as Falcon in the comics. The Falcon suit he wore during the series may be a sleek red flight suit but it still had little resemblance to any suit Falcon wore in the comics. But as Sam comes into his own as Captain America, it’s fitting that his suit is a true panel-to-screen adaptation.

1 Spider-Man (The Amazing Spider-Man 2)

The suit from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 utilizes a vibrant red and blue spandex material with the enlarged white eyes comics fans have come to expect from the web-slinger. Striking a resemblance with most Spidey artists like Todd McFarlane or John Romita Jr.

The predecessor to this suit, from The Amazing Spider-Man, was not well-received by fans, along with the movie itself. Many complained the suit was too dark and that it looked rather menacing. In response to the feedback, Spidey dons the new brighter suit for the sequel; one more in line with the iconic Spider-Man look.
