10 Best Epic Movies To Watch On HBO Max (Including Dune)

With the new addition of the sci-fi epic Dune, HBO Max is quickly becoming the go-to streaming service for grand-scale blockbuster viewing options. HBO Max offers an excellent combination of recent releases, original films, modern favorites, and classic masterpieces.

Many of these epics take place in dystopian futures such as Mad Max: Fury Road and Blade Runner 2049, others are set in the modern world but introduce new technology and life forms like Tenet and Godzilla vs. Kong, and some are set in entirely unfamiliar setting such as The Lord of the Rings and Dune, but all of them share the common threads of grand scales, elevated reality, and massive stakes.

Dune

Like the other recent releases by Warner Bros., Dune is currently available on HBO Max simultaneous with its theatrical release. The film is an adaptation of the novel and tells the story of a nobleman’s son who must protect the galaxy’s most valuable resource during a period of violence and unrest.

Dune is filled with beautiful shots, thrilling action, and an incredible cast. The film is ambitious and boasts an impressive scope. For fans of massive sci-fi epics, Dune is a must-watch film that will hopefully launch an entire franchise.

Ready Player One

Set in the not-so-distant future, Ready Player One depicts a world in which millions of people escape to a virtual reality oasis to avoid their bleak lives in the real world. In the virtual reality world, every player has their own avatar, equipment, weapons, and vehicles, many of which are pop culture references.

While it may not be Steven Spielberg’s best summer blockbuster, the film still captures the same nostalgic feel and sense of adventure that are indicative of so many of his movies. It is a fun and entertaining movie that brings together characters, such as Batman and Chucky, and objects, like Monty Python’s Holy Hand Grenade, from all different corners of cinema.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League

After years of demanding to see the “Snyder Cut,” fans were finally rewarded when HBO Max released Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The film tells a similar story to the theatrical version but is far longer and more epic.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League makes some major improvements over WB’s theatrical version such as fleshing out the characters more, increasing the scope of the story, and building up the team dynamic, making the movie the proper culmination of the DCEU that fans had hoped for.

Godzilla Vs. Kong

Following several solo films that built up the MonsterVerse, Godzilla vs. Kong sees the two titular monsters duke it out after the humans recruit Kong to stop Godzilla, who has made a series of mysterious attacks.

King Kong and Godzilla are two of the most iconic movie monsters who have each appeared in some great movies over the years. While the script leaves something to be desired, the film delivers on the central fight between the two stars and creates a fun movie filled with action and spectacle.

Tenet

The sci-fi action thriller Tenet follows a CIA agent who learns to manipulate the flow of time as he attempts to prevent forces from the future from bringing devastation to his present time.

The film is masterfully directed and well-acted, but the real standout of the film is the execution of the concept. Director Christopher Nolan has delivered some tremendous sci-fi epics and Tenet is visually unlike any other film. As the entropy of objects and characters moves forward and backward, often simultaneously within the same scene, the movie is filled with brilliantly choreographed mind-blowing moments.

The Matrix

Set in a dystopian future in which humans and robots are at war with one another, The Matrix follows a hacker who discovers that his world is a simulation the robots use to enslave humans, causing him to break free and join the war against the machines.

Few films in the last 25 years have been as cinematically influential as The Matrix. With its cyberpunk aesthetic, Eastern philosophy influence, and revolutionary use of bullet-time cinematography, The Matrix remains one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made.

Mad Max: Fury Road

After a 30 year hiatus, the Mad Max franchise finally returned with Mad Max: Fury Road. The film follows Max Rockatansky and Imperator Furiosa as they flee from the villainous tyrant Immortan Joe across a post-apocalyptic desert wasteland.

At its core, Mad Max: Fury Road is essentially one long and thrilling car chase that features some of the most remarkable and breath-taking action sequences of all time. It is a simple story told across an epic scale, resulting in a modern action movie classic.

2001: A Space Odyssey

Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey centers around a crew’s journey to Jupiter after the discovery of an alien monolith on earth. However, during the flight, the crew must contend with their onboard computer system, HAL 9000.

Ambitious and sprawling, the film is Kubrick at his best, as it takes an existential approach to examining humanity’s progress as well as artificial intelligence and other life throughout the universe. 2001: A Space Odyssey manages to be both an epic adventure and a deeply thoughtful reflection on the human condition.

Blade Runner 2049

As the long-awaited sequel to the cult classic Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049 is set in a dystopian future filled with humans and replicants. The film centers around a replicant blade runner who discovers a secret that could change the world.

Blade Runner 2049 proved that director Denis Villeneuve could use an epic sci-fi setting as the vehicle to deliver deep and thoughtful storytelling. The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy

Arguably the most epic option available on HBO Max is the sprawling Lord of the Rings trilogy. The films chronicle the fellowship’s efforts to defeat the dark lord Sauron by traveling across Middle-earth and destroying the One Ring of power.

Immensely ambitious and with a grand scope, the staggering runtime of the trilogy totals over 9 hours. The films are filled with massive battle scenes, monstrous enemies, and worldwide stakes. HBO Max offers both the theatrical and extended additions of all three films for fans to enjoy.
