The upcoming female-led spinoff of hit TV series and film franchise 21 Jump Street reportedly has a title. After two film adaptations starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in 2012 and 2014, Sony made the decision to switch things up and offer audiences a female-led version of the cop comedy. The two films starring Tatum and Hill were both huge box office successes, and told the story of Jenko (Tatum) and Schmidt (Hill), two undercover cops who consistently managed to find trouble at every turn. The films were based on the 1980s era TV series of the same name, which featured a then very young and very unknown Johnny Depp.
The unnamed, female-led 21 Jump Street spinoff has been stuck in development hell, with at least six years having passed since the idea was first announced. At one point, it was said to feature comedian Tiffany Haddish and musician/actress Awkwafina. So far, though, there haven’t been any details regarding the comedy’s plot and official casting details have been non-existent. Despite the female-led spinoff showing little to no progress over the past couple of years, it appears that now at least an unofficial title has been revealed.
The news of a reported title, 21 Jump Street: Now For Her Pleasure, originally appeared in a Deadline but has since been deleted from the site, prompting speculation that Sony isn’t quite ready for the title to be public knowledge. Nonetheless, the news is the first bit of information on the spinoff for quite some time and will likely cause much debate.
The concept of turning popular franchises traditionally led by male characters into female-led ones has been employed several times over the past few years, with middling results. Although these sorts of films haven’t been especially lucrative at the box office, some of them have still been viciously trolled online. Most notable among the female-led spinoffs was the fiasco surrounding Paul Feig’s 2016 Ghostbusters: Answer the Call. By this point, there’s ample evidence to suggest Hollywood might not actually be interested in taking chances on new concepts for its diverse and talented pool of actresses, and instead sees rehashing popular male-led titles with women casts as their best option.
Regardless of whether or not the female-led spinoff of 21 Jump Street actually ends up seeing the light of day, it’s likely to be the case most people will consider 21 Jump Street: Now For Her Pleasure to be a terrible title. It certainly sounds more at home in an advert for deodorant or perhaps cigarettes in the 1950s, and doesn’t bode well for the future of the female-led 21 Jump Street spinoff. Then again, the reason the original title reveal was deleted could be that it isn’t actually the official title, which is hopefully the case.
