The ’90s Sailor Moon had some great fights between the Guardians and the villains, but these were the best.

The underlying plot of Sailor Moon revolves around an ongoing battle between good and evil that will determine the fate of the universe. Throughout the series, Sailor Moon and the Sailor Guardians engage in many fights against weird and horrifying opponents.

Fans of the series like to joke that many of the fights in Sailor Moon are rather short or comical, but some of the battles are truly epic. These fights were the ones that went down to the wire and kept fans wondering to the last blow if the Sailor Guardians would emerge victoriously.

10 Sailor Guardians V. Cyprine And Ptilol

Amongst the Witches 5, Cyrpine and Ptilol claimed to be the strongest members of the group. The two were one twin but would split apart in combat, with Cyprine firing blue energy blasts from her staff and Ptilol firing red energy blasts.

In episode 123, “Shadow of Destruction: The Messiah of Silence Awakens,” Cyprine uses hypnosis to draw people to Mugen Acadmey at night to harvest their Pure Heart Crystals. The Sailor Guardians had a hard time in this fight because of Cyprine and Ptilol’s ability to absorb incoming attacks which also made the stronger. Only after tricking the two into firing on each other were the Sailor Guardians able to emerge victorious.

9 Sailor Uranus V. Sailor Star Fighter

Sometimes the hardest fights are the ones with friends. After Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune accept Galaxia’s bracelets and come under her control, they prove their loyalty to her by killing Sailor Pluto and Sailor Saturn and taking their Star Seeds.

This sets up the battle between them and Eternal Sailor Moon and the Sailor Starlights. In episode 198, “Dying Stars: Uranus and Neptune’s Last Stand,” Sailor Uranus faces down Sailor Star Fighter. Despite going all out, Sailor Star Fighter’s punch barely fazes Sailor Uranus, who sends Star Fighter flying with a punch of her own. The battle against two former allies is both tense and heartbreaking, especially with Eternal Sailor Moon in the background begging them to stop.

8 Sailor Guardians And Tuxedo Mask V. Kaolinite

Kaolinite’s plan to defeat Sailor Moon and the Sailor Guardians almost came to fruition after she stole Usagi’s Cosmic Heart Compact, preventing her from transforming, and took Tuxedo Mask prisoner. In episode 102, “The Stolen Pure Heart: Usagi’s Crisis,” the Sailor Guardians managed to retrieve the brooch and force a final showdown with Kaolinite.

To defeat Kaolinite, the Sailor Guardians and Sailor Moon are forced pool their power together and launch a Sailor Planet Attack, but Kaolinite refused to go down easily. With things looking desperate and moved by Sailor Moon’s heroism, Sailor Uranus pushed herself to the limit and used World Shaking to finally end the fight.

7 Sailor Mars V. Kōan

All of the battles with the Spectre Sisters are great, but one that stands out the most is the battle between Sailor Mars and Kōan. In episode 70, “Battle of the Flames of Love! Mars vs. Koan,” Kōan attempted to capture Chibiusa at the Hikawa Shrine, but in doing so invited the wrath of Sailor Mars.

At first, Sailor Mars and Kōan are evenly matched, but when Kōan targeted Yūichirō, she forced Sailor Mars to protect him and badly wounded her. However, Sailor Mars managed to rattle Kōan by explaining to her what true love is, which allowed Tuxedo Mask to take Chibiusa to safety. When Rubeus then rejects Kōan for her failure, Sailor Mars is there to help heal her broken heart and to start a new life.

6 Sailor Uranus And Sailor Neptune V. Germatoid

The battle between Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune and Germatoid is one of the best animated fights in the whole series. In episode 124, ” The Coming Terror of Darkness: Struggle of the Eight Guardians,” Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune demonstrated their skill and power in what was otherwise a minor battle.

After Sailor Uranus destroyed his plant-like body, Germatoid placed his spirit into the bodies of an army of puppets. Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune were then forced to engage in brutal close combat to find out which one hosted the real Germatoid. The puppets briefly gained the upper hand, but once the Sailor Guardians recovered their Talismans, Sailor Uranus quickly ended the fight by embedding her sword into the real Germatoid’s eye.

5 Sailor Saturn And Sailor ChibiMoon V. Nehalennia

Queen Nehalennia was one of the Sailor Guardians’ most dangerous opponents. At the start of Sailor Moon Sailor Stars, Nehalennia managed to capture all of the Sailor Guardians except Sailor Moon, and plunged them into one of the darkest moments in the whole series.

In “Moon Power of Love: The Nightmare Ends,” Sailor Saturn and Sailor ChibiMoon faced off against Nehalennia after their fellow Guardians had already been captured. Sailor Saturn attempted to defeat Nehalennia with her Silence Glaive Surprise attack, but Sailor ChibiMoon stopped her knowing that the attack would kill her in the process. The battle ended with Sailor Saturn trapped in Nehalennia’s mirror and Sailor ChibiMoon fading out of existence, with all the Guardians relying on Sailor Moon to save the day.

4 Sailor Guardians V. Black Lady

The Black Lady was the dark alter-ego of Chibiusa created by Wiseman’s brainwashing, and she is one of the most popular villains in the series. In episode 88, “The Final Battle Between Light and Dark: Pledge of Love for the Future,” the Sailor Guardians confronted the Black Lady as she prepared to destroy the Earth with the full power of the Evil Black Crystal.

Convinced that no on loved her, the Black Lady attacked the Sailor Guardians. Tuxedo Mask sacrificed himself to protect Sailor Moon, and with the power of their friendship and love the Sailor Guardians managed to touch Chibiusa’s consciousness. With the help of her Silver Crystal, Sailor Moon brought back the real Chibiusua, and together they destroyed Death Phantom.

3 Sailor Moon V. Sailor Galaxia

Sailor Galaxia was renown throughout the galaxy for her penchant for destruction and thirst for power. She was the most powerful of all the Sailor Guardians and the final antagonist in the last arc of the series.

In episode 200, “Usagi’s Love: The Moonlight Illuminates the Galaxy,” the final battle between good and evil comes to a close. Th defeat Galaxia, Chibi Chibi transformed into the Sword of Sealing, but Princess Serenity refused to use it to defeat Galaxia. Instead, she healed Galaxia with the power of love, which allowed her to expel Chaos from her body and effectively brought the series to a close.

2 Sailor Guardians V. DD Girls

The penultimate battle of season 1 featured the Sailor Guardians against the vicious DD Girls. Episode 45, “Death of the Sailor Guardians: The Tragic Final Battle,” is seared in many fans memories, as one-by-one the Sailor Guardians fell to Queen Beryl’s henchmen.

The fights between each Sailor Guardian and their respective opponent are excellent. Each Sailor Guardian used their powers to sacrifice themselves in order to take down the yōma, until only Sailor Moon was left standing to confront Queen Beryl.

1 Sailor Moon V. Super Beryl

In the final episode of season 1, “Usagi’s Eternal Wish: A Brand New Life,” Sailor Moon faced off against Queen Beryl, and together they fought an epic battle. With all of her friends gone, Sailor Moon is forced to fight Queen Beryl alone, but not before she defeated the brainwashed Prince Endymion.

After Sailor Moon restored his memory with the power of the Orgel, Queen Beryl also killed Prince Endymion. To defeat Super Beryl—a union between Queen Beryl and Queen Metalia—Sailor Moon transformed into Princess Serenity, and with the spirits of the four defeated Sailor Guardians behind her, she managed to blast Beryl away with the power of her Silver Crystal. With this battle, season 1 came to close and left fans with one of the finest moments in the whole series.
