Since video games are an interactive form of media, a player’s actions do typically affect the virtual world in some way regardless of the series or genre. For example, if a player chooses to kill an enemy, they usually can in any game that has a battle system like an RPG or FPS.
But in most games, players don’t have to worry about killing their allies. Even if they accidentally hit them or make a wrong dialogue choice, the friendly characters are typically immune to the possible mortal damage. Despite this, there are some games where a player’s gameplay decisions can actually lead to the demise of not only a beloved NPC but the main protagonist as well.
10 Terraria
Within the action-adventure sandbox game Terraria, various bosses and events with multiple weapons need to be overcome by the player in order to progress further into the game. While some of these bosses and events require the player to go to a certain location, others can be spawned by the player or randomly spawned. If the player is around the other NPCs when these enemies appear, then these enemies can kill the friendly NPCs.
While the NPC technically respawns the next day, the NPC has a different name, which suggests that the NPC is actually a different person despite being visually the same. This is supported by the fact that if any town pets die, they respawn the next day with both a new name and one of the other possible visual appearances. Besides the Guide NPC, who has to killed in order to progress, the friendly NPCs will only die if the player chooses to bring hostile mobs to their houses.
9 Undertale
The popular RPG Undertale, which was released by Toby Fox in 2015, is a famous example of a game that allows the player to kill their allies. As the player explores the Underground on their journey back to the surface, they meet various monsters that they can either kill or defeat without any violence. This includes both monsters from random encounters and possible friends the player meets along the way.
Depending on whether a player kills other monsters and how many monsters are killed, the player will get different endings. On the “Genocide” run where the player kills every possible monster, the player will actually receive consequences for their actions.
8 Life is Strange
While each of the games in the Life is Strange series focus on different characters and game mechanics, these episodic adventure games all focus on the ability to make choices. Depending on the actions the player takes or the dialogue choices they make, there will be different outcomes for the various likable characters in Life is Strange’s multiple games.
Although each singular choice only has a small impact on its own and there is an overall narrative that the player will see regardless of their decisions, all of the choices accumulate and do determine what ending the player gets and whether certain characters live or die. In all the main games, major characters can die throughout the story depending on key decisions the player makes in the narrative.
7 Night Trap
Released in 1992 for the Sega CD, Night Trap is an FMV horror game where the player must save a group of teenage girls from intruders breaking into the house. Using multiple surveillance cameras and the extreme traps in the house, the player must capture the intruders before they fully infiltrate the building. According to Kotaku, at the time the game was released, Night Trap was considered controversial and led to the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB).
Depending on the actions the player takes, the teenagers can either be saved from these intruders or captured and later killed by them. One of the main endings in the game actually lets the player possibly capture the main heroine of the game themselves using one of the traps.
6 Darkest Dungeon
Fully released in 2016, Darkest Dungeon is an RPG dungeon-crawler where the player has recently inherited a large mansion from their ancestor, who accidentally released dark creatures from the underground dungeons onto the world. Now, the player must assemble a group of heroes to journey through the procedurally generated dungeons and defeat the source of these monsters.
But the player has to be extremely careful as they navigate these dungeons because battles can be rough and every examinable thing can be a trap. If they make some poor choices and a hero dies, that hero is permanently dead.
5 Dragon Age
Beginning in 2009, Dragon Age is a series of fantasy RPG games by BioWare that take place in the fictional realm of Thedas. While each of the games focuses on different characters and slightly different plots, all of the games are connected. Because of this, the character the player made in previous games and the choices they made are referenced in later games.
During these games, the player can make certain dialogue choices and choose to do certain actions that lead to the permanent deaths of the main characters. For example, at the end of Dragon Age II, the player can choose to kill one of the main party members, Anders, and this affects whether he shows up in Dragon Age: Inquisition or not.
4 Hellnight
Hellnight is one of the best obscure horror games that was published by both Atlus and Konami and released for the original PlayStation in 1998. The game follows an unnamed protagonist as he is chased into the underground sewers of Tokyo by a strange creature who destroyed the subway train the protagonist was on. As he goes deeper underground, he discovers an underground city known as The Mesh filled with many secrets that reveal what the creature is and why the protagonist is being chased.
Over the course of the game, the player has several possible companions they can have travel with them. But, the player can only have one of these companions at a time, and the player can only get a new companion by having the previous companion killed by the creature. Depending on who the player has in their party, they will get a different ending.
3 Until Dawn
Possibly still the most interesting title developed by Supermassive Games, Until Dawn is a 2015 interactive horror game where a group of friends are invited to a log cabin on the snowy Blackwood Mountain. As the player experiences the various chapters as the different characters, they soon discover that some sinister and deadly things are happening that may be tied to the death of twin sisters, Hannah and Beth, that occurred the year before.
While playing the game, any of the main characters can live or die depending on the choices the player makes. Some of these characters are much easier to kill while others will be more likely to survive, but all variations lead to different endings. There’s even an ending in which no one lives, a rarity not only for video games but for the horror movies Until Dawn faithfully emulates.
2 Fire Emblem
Before the most recent games in the Fire Emblem franchise, any characters that were killed in battle permanently die rather than being brought back to life after the level was over. This meant that players had to be extremely careful with their choices in these fantasy tactical RPGs because one wrong move would mean a character was gone forever.
Although the default setting of recent games does not do permadeath anymore, the player can choose to set the game to “Classic” mode, which will bring back the permadeath. Even though some players do not like the stress and anxiety of the original games, other players like the realism and challenge of characters truly dying in these virtual wars.
1 Devil Survivor
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor is one of the subseries within the larger Shin Megami Tensei franchise. Even though the two main games have different characters and plotlines, both games are tactical RPGs where the player has a week to save the world from a demon apocalypse. Similar to other games in the franchise, the player recruits demons to fight other demons.
In between battles, gamers can visit different locations to see different events. But the player only has a limited amount of time to explore, which means they cannot go everywhere. The player’s choices on where they go and what they do determine which characters live or die and what ending they get.
