10 Best Gossip Girl Reboot Characters Ranked

On the heels of the midseason finale of the Gossip Girl reboot, fans are left with several questions about the fates of Julien, Zoya, Obie, Aki, Audrey, and Luna, but they’ll only learn more in November when the show returns. After watching the newest Constance and St. Jude’s gang tussle with the world in the first six episodes, some characters have emerged as the best ones on the show.

Predictably, most of the best players in the new Gossip Girl are students, but the unexpected inclusion of teachers and now parents has added to the roster of great characters that the teen drama has.

10 Monet De Haan

10 Best Gossip Girl Reboot Characters Ranked

As someone who started off as a fan favorite, Monet has since fallen from grace after betraying Julien’s trust. Sassy and fun, Monet was always Julien’s social media manager, but she was also considered a part of the core friend group and was expected to be loyal to them.

Her cutting remarks and razor-sharp wit were reminiscent of the original Gossip Girl, and her outfits were enviable, but her defection to the bland Pippa and Bianca after leaking Zoya and Julien’s Hulaween costume wasn’t received well. Monet was missing from the midseason finale, and only time will tell what her arc will be.

9 Kate Keller

10 Best Gossip Girl Reboot Characters Ranked

The 24-year-old teacher is a force to reckon with on the show, even if she realizes that only sporadically. She is easy to hate — restarting a vicious tell-all blog to keep students in check, and stalking said students to get material on them is deplorable behavior for anybody, let alone an educator who is placed in charge of their safety.

At the same time, fans can’t help but like her a bit too. Her internal struggles with perfectionism and her failed attempts at being a successful writer are relatable for many young adults, and the power trip she feels with the success of Gossip Girl can now be explained, if not justified. Kate is a complex woman who has her flaws, but owning her imperfections made her a better character for viewers to stomach.

8 Davis Calloway

10 Best Gossip Girl Reboot Characters Ranked

Fans wish for more parental involvement to be written in future Gossip Girl episodes, since their motives make the show a whole lot more interesting. Julien’s father was the first few parents to get involved in the show, and his compassion and love for his daughter are sweet to watch.

Despite being the one that Julien and Zoya’s mother had walked out on, he made the effort to get to know Nick and resolve the long-standing prejudice that they had against each other so that their kids could finally have a healthier relationship. He also made sure that Julien knew when she had messed up, and he stayed involved in her grades and school life even though he led a jet-setting life to get back to. Here’s hoping there’s more Davis Calloway in upcoming episodes.

7 Audrey Hope

10 Best Gossip Girl Reboot Characters Ranked

The Blair Waldorf-esque Audrey was a promising character at first: she loved the classics, related to old Hollywood, and seemed charming in comparison to her Instagram-hungry peers, but Audrey’s character became a screaming mess shortly after. For a change, somebody was going broke in the show, but her reaction to her mother’s very real problems was superficial and unfair.

For a show that works hard to be sensitive, the teenager’s insensitive approach to her mother’s mental health condition and financial losses was very jarring, and she didn’t even manage to pull off the mean girl charade with Zoya with enough panache to be believable. Fans are still eager for her snide comments, and they want to see if she’ll cope well with her new situation with Max and Aki, a couple that fans were rooting for on Gossip Girl.

6 Akeno “Aki” Menzies

10 Best Gossip Girl Reboot Characters Ranked

Eternally decent and fair, Aki finally got some riveting plotlines after an initially unimpressive introduction to audiences. His patience with Audrey and the gang is sweet, and viewers loved to see him embrace his sexuality, for himself and for his girlfriend too. He is quite like a younger Nate Archibald.

Aki is a fiercely loyal friend, and when he sees his loved ones in trouble, he goes to any lengths to save them, the way he did with Max to protect him from Rafa’s predatory nature. It was refreshing to see him work through his issues with Audrey instead of just jumping ship, and his calming demeanor is the perfect foil to everybody else’s chaotic tendencies.

5 Otto “Obie” Bergmann IV

10 Best Gossip Girl Reboot Characters Ranked

The good guy next door was supposed to be an equivalent of Dan in Gossip Girl, but the wealthy half-German has many more layers to him than viewers could have imagined. Initially, Obie was painted as the moral compass of the group, and he even participated in some performative activism in the first few episodes but his double-standards made him a bit unlikeable.

However, his character took a total U-turn in the finale, and Obie finally dropped the holier-than-thou act to actually oppose his mother. He stopped trying to be a nice guy and followed his instincts with Julien, making him a deliciously unpredictable character to watch out for.

4 Luna La

10 Best Gossip Girl Reboot Characters Ranked

Julien’s stylist was standoffish and cliquey at first, but she revealed a more accepting side of herself with Zoya and Julien’s newly minted relationship, which was heartwarming. She tried to help Zoya in her own way by coaching her on how to behave in public with a high-profile boyfriend like Obie, and actually behaved civilly with Z, which can’t be said for the others.

Her best friend Monet up and left the moment it was convenient for her, and Luna could’ve done the same, but she stuck around with JC and even showed enthusiasm at the cuteness of the two sisters. Luna’s ability to adapt and grow with people makes her a very likable character on Gossip Girl.

3 Zoya Lott

10 Best Gossip Girl Reboot Characters Ranked

The poster child for anti-Capitalism, hot-headed Zoya is a breath of fresh air in a show full of teens who talk in strangely seductive whispers and seem to know how to act like adults at their young age. She’s politically incorrect, talks over the adults at dinner parties, and seems unsure of how to navigate a relationship, which tracks for somebody who is supposed to be fourteen.

Zoya is new blood in a social setting that very rarely lets people of other classes in, and to see her tussle for and create a space for herself at the proverbial table is quite inspiring for young women to watch.

2 Julien Calloway

10 Best Gossip Girl Reboot Characters Ranked

The main character of Gossip Girl has managed to carve a special niche for herself in Cecily Von Ziegesar’s Upper East Side universe — she doesn’t ape Blair or Serena, but lives her life with kindness and a desire to better black women, on her own terms. Julien has her moments of rage and anger, but she holds herself accountable for her missteps and really tries to be better.

The best part is that she doesn’t do it in a preachy or boring way. Julien keeps it real and doesn’t get influenced by people easily. The only reason she didn’t take the top spot is because her plotlines lack a bit of spice which may change, come November.

1 Max Wolfe

Max Wolfe is a truly intriguing character on the show, and he manages to surprise audiences every single time. He’s not just his sexy playboy lifestyle — he has a deep love for his fathers, cares for his friends (which he realized later), and knows the difference between love and predatorial behavior.

Fans were disappointed that the teacher-student relationship trope came into play in the show, but Max very quickly shot down Rafa once he found out that he regularly mingles with senior students, and that presence of mind sets him apart from the others. Instead of waiting around for blackmail to take effect, he takes action and confesses his wrongdoings to the ones he cares for. Max’s nonchalance towards the hype of Gossip Girl is his best quality.
