10 Best Graphic Novel Adaptation Movies According To Rotten Tomatoes

Graphic novels often provide a good midway point between a novel and a movie. They have the visuals to back up the dialogue (which is essentially just a script at that point). This can make it a bit easier for directors and screenplay writers to adapt graphic novels into a film– the visual style guide is already there anyway.

As a result, plenty of movies that were adapted from graphic novels score high in both the audience and critical reception. They are few and far between– in fact, most are contemporary as well and came from the last three decades. Most of them are good too which is astounding considering they’re all relatively young films, but to save anyone the trouble, here are the best of the best– according to Rotten Tomatoes.

10 V FOR VENDETTA – 73%

Alan Moore is one of the most celebrated graphic novel writers of all time and he somehow crafts his masterpieces in a way that would make it a challenge to adapt them into films. Still, this didn’t deter the filmmakers of V For Vendetta, based on Moore’s novel of the same name.

The film adaptation, as well as Moore’s graphic novel, certainly aged well today. In fact, hacker groups are now aping V’s Guy Fawkes mask as it symbolized anarchy or liberation more than anything else.

9 SIN CITY – 77%

Much like Alan Moore, Frank Miller is another heavyweight in the comic book and graphic novel industry. One of his best original creations is the standalone neo-noir crime anthology, Sin City. Its film adaptation fell in good hands, specifically director Robert Rodriguez’s.

Both Miller and Rodriguez even worked together as directors in order to recreate the brooding melancholy of Sin City’s monochrome world. The result was that no other film like Sin City exists, except a botched sequel which ought to be omitted.

8 ROAD TO PERDITION – 81%

Seeing how successful Road to Perdition was as a jazz-era father-and-son graphic novel, it was only a matter of time before it attracted a stellar film adaptation. It just so happens that Tom Hanks was chosen for the lead role.

It was released in 2002 and quickly became an Oscar magnet with six nominations and one win for Best Cinematography. What’s even more amazing is that the graphic novel was originally drawn in a simple colorless old comic style but the film was able to improve upon this and made the whole movie look like a painting.

7 SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD – 82%

Speaking of improving upon the source material’s atmosphere and thematic style, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World did it with flying colors (quite literally with the vibrant cinematography). It’s a faithful recreation of the cool graphic novel Scott Pilgrim.

In fact, the film even mostly follows the narrative of the graphic novel almost 1:1 in ratio. Moreover, Michael Cera’s performance as Scott Pilgrim was considered one of his best roles to date by his fans and the film’s audience. If anything it’s a great film to watch if you want to see Chris Evans (Captain America) and Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) before they became Avengers.

6 MY FRIEND DAHMER – 86%

My Friend Dahmer explores the adolescence of one of the notorious Jeffrey Dahmer, a serial killer and cannibal who murdered and dismembered 17 victims over many years. It’s also based on the graphic novel of the same name.

Both the graphic novel and the film explores how Dahmer came to be from his dysfunctional parents, lonely high school life, and his rather twisted habits as a child with the makings of a psychopath. It’s a dark antithesis to the usual coming-of-age story in Hollywood.

5 A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE – 87%

A story similar to Road to Perdition but more sinister, A History of Violence is about a family who gets himself into trouble after being a local hero. It’s based on the graphic novel of the same name.

Viggo Mortensen is the star of the film adaptation as Tom. The film explores the domino effects of his vigilantism where he attracts the attention of a crime syndicate who then threatens him and his whole family about unfinished business in the past. The problem is, Tom doesn’t know anything about such a past.

4 BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR – 89%

For a modern and unapologetic peek into the chaos of teenage girl adolescence, one cannot go wrong with Blue is the Warmest Color. It explores the story of two girls coming of age in the most dysfunctionally French way ever involving confused romance, fighting, crying, sex, and cheating.

In that regard, the film adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name does justice to its source material. Blue is the Warmest Color is rife with turbulent and dramatic narratives which, accompanied by the teenage issues of the protagonists, paints lesbian romance in a different light.

3 SNOWPIERCER – 94%

Before director Bong Joon-ho created his magnum opus in the form of Parasite, he was already rocking the silver screen with Snowpiercer. It’s a post-apocalyptic film where the whole world and its population got crammed into a perpetually-running train.

Its source material is a graphic novel called Le Transperceneige which is French for The Snow-Piercer. Needless to say, no other director could have pulled off such a daring adaptation which explored the class divide and inequality in human society.

2 DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL – 95%

Here’s a more unique one, Diary of a Teenage Girl is among the highest-rated coming-of-age movies ever. It’s an American comedy-drama that showcases the messy puberty of a girl named Minnie Goetze who, at age 15, lost her virginity to her mother’s boyfriend. Take a second to digest that.

It’s also based on a hybrid graphic novel of the same name and it’s peculiar as it takes in the form of Minnie’s diary. As such, the graphic novel also details Minnie’s obsession with her mother’s boyfriend like a reverse version of Lolita.

1 PERSEPOLIS – 96%

Yet again another coming-of-age story, Persepolis is all about the unforgettable childhood and biography of Marjane Satrapi during her days in Iran. Both the film and the graphic novel it’s based upon details Satrapi and her family’s struggles under a dictatorship.

The film pays homage to the graphic novel well by also being animated and even using Satrapi’s art style for her book. It’s by far the highest-rated and most critically-acclaimed film based on a graphic novel, and also by far the most relevant when it comes to the world’s current state of affairs.
