Blumhouse is one of the most prolific production companies in all of horror history. Having taken the indie world and entire film industry by storm with it’s first box office smash Paranormal Activity the company has not let up. Jason Blum is a man that looked at every angle for a film with essentially no-budget and saw only upside to a creepy story.
The Into The Dark series of films that releases periodically on Hulu essentially follows that same formula that Blumhouse has always found tried and true. So when thinking about jumping into something new for all horror fans, these are the top ten critically praised entries of the ongoing horror series of films.
10 Pure (71% Fresh)
This film is a teen coming of age tale told through the eyes of several young women who perform a purity ritual and one believes she may have unleashed a dark entity upon the retreat they are on with other girls and their fathers.
Directed By independent filmmaker Hannah Macpherson & starring a mostly unknown cast this film is a slow burn that is less tailored to jump-scare horror fans and more focused on the message itself. We live in some horrifying times for women and this film definitely reflects that.
9 All That We Destroy (71% Fresh)
An entry into the series that is steeped in the ideas of family dynamics. A film about a mother who believes her son may be on his way to becoming a serial killer so she creates clones to try and rid him of the psychopathic actions he has been committing.
Visually doing a great job exploring the themes as well as doing it with the writing All That We Destroy is the perfect example of what works on the small screen with a small budget. What lengths would a mother go to for her child? This has been explored before, but when done right it is okay to see something viewers have seen before.
8 Down (73% Fresh)
In Down two employees from the same large office building get stuck in an elevator together over the long weekend the day before Valentine’s Day which also happens to be over President’s Day weekend. This means they will be stuck in there until Tuesday morning at the earliest, this premise is familiar and already intriguing to fans of horror because the viewer wants to find out what is going to go wrong.
No spoilers at all, it is handled really well, the acting just gets better as it goes along. The viewer stays engaged and because the story clocks in at 81 minutes it does not get bogged down (teehee) by a long runtime. It is a lean, mean, and fun experience.
7 Crawlers (75% Fresh)
The most recent Into The Dark release went a little wacky and it was pretty fun for viewers to experience. Crawlers is an alien body-snatching invasion sort of film that uses very interesting storytelling techniques that are unconventional and work to its advantage to make it standout in a formula that has been done a million times over.
The way this film is presented had a very in your face vibe to it and very much let’s fans know it as a film, fans of the show Daybreak should really give this one a try as it i very similar in tone.
6 Uncanny Annie (75% Fresh)
The first “episode” of season 2 was the second Halloween themed Into The Dark, focusing on a group of college students who become trapped in a board game where their darkest secrets come to life and they must fight their way out.
The show embraces the ideas of using using concepts that are sort of warped versions of older ideas, after all much of film is not original anymore but retooled works from others. Giving indie filmmakers the chance to do what they want on larger platforms is what Jason Blum always strives to do.
5 A Nasty Piece Of Work (82% Fresh)
After finding out they will not be getting their Christmas bonuses two co-workers are both invited to their bosses house, where they must compete in a violent series of games for a promotion.
This is probably one of the best in the series, doing an excellent job of combining comedy and horrific events so as to stay balanced enough to keep the audience sufficiently engaged and repulsed. Not at all for the faint of heart as this has some of the most messed up stuff the series has let slip through, but if fans are into that sort of thing this is highly recommended.
4 Pilgrim (83% Fresh)
From prolific horror directors Patrick Melton & Marcus Dunstan comes the second Thanksgiving offering of the series Pilgrim. Based on true events of a woman inviting pilgrim re-enactors to thanksgiving to add some flare to the festivities, the actors begin taking their roles to the extreme and things begin to take a turn.
As a veteran writer/director duo who have worked on iconic franchise both indie like Feast & bigger like Saw, The Collector, Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark it was just a good call to get them to do an episode of this show. Masters of their craft they came up with a brilliant story that was based on actual events and is very frightening to think about.
3 Pooka (86% Fresh)
Creepy, very very creepy, an entry about an actor who decides to be the mascot for a new toy. Will not say another thing about this, slow burn, worth the wait, deserves absolutely all of the praise and maybe more of it.
Watch the film, just one look at that weird costume and viewers will know it’s going to be a film that is going to be a rather weird one. This film ranks among the very best that Hulu’s Into The Dark series has to offer.
2 New Year, New You (93% Fresh)
Every single person on this planet wants to believe that they will be able to change at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. A group of millennial women get together for girls’ night on that fateful last night, but while reflecting on memories, secrets come up and start to manifest in shocking ways.
Do not watch this with anyone viewers may harbor ill will toward, just watch it by alone with a tub of ice cream. It is extremely entertaining and being released right after the slow-burn Pooka was a smart call by Blumhouse as it has a completely different feel to it that is all its own.
1 Culture Shock (100% Fresh)
The only entry of Into The Dark that has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is Culture Shock. Released as the “Independence Day” episode this film is extremely socially relevant, about a young Mexican woman who crosses the border illegally to chase the “American Dream” but ends up in a nightmare instead.
This essentially functioned very similarly to the American Horror Story: Cult by being very in the moment and getting its point across and letting the viewer know exactly where the filmmakers stood without an apology. A film that challenges the idea of politics versus human rights and does it not subtly at all.
