While long-time fans of Animal Crossing have been introduced to as many as 400+ vastly different villagers over the years, the most frequently seen personality type belongs to the jock villagers. As of the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, players have been introduced to 80+ villagers with the “jock” personality type.
Of course, quantity doesn’t always mean quality, and a large number of jock villagers are actively avoided by players due to their overwhelming energy. However, there are a handful of sporty characters like Kid Cat and Sprocket who are able to inspire an island with their enthusiasm rather than exhaust their fellow villagers.
10 Frobert
The name “Frobert” is easily identified as a combination of “Robert” and “frog,” but the wordplay is incredibly cute despite its simplicity. Frobert’s sweet energy continues far beyond his name. Frobert is an adorable, spotted green frog with his two front teeth poking shyly out of his wide smile. Frobert’s favorite saying is “Always aim high!” and he is known to provide short motivational speeches to players and villagers alike. Compared to many other characters, Frobert’s a great villager for cozy islands with a softer aesthetic in New Horizons.
9 Bam
Bam is an energetic and outspoken blue deer villager with the jock personality type. Bam is tough like other jock villagers, and his name seems to illustrate this as a reference to “bam” as a sound effect for running into something. While Bam may be athletically talented, he isn’t necessarily the best with his words and is therefore very blunt in conversation. As described in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Bam’s “outspoken nature can be jarring at first, but he isn’t afraid to say what’s on his mind.” Players who appreciate keeping their island full of honest, direct villagers may really enjoy keeping Bam around as their resident jock.
8 Bill
Like many other duck villagers, Bill is one of the most undeniably adorable villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This sporty villager can be seen running around a player’s island indulging in activities associated with the “play” hobby.
According to Bill’s Animal Crossing e-reader card, “If you’re into football, you’ll like Bill” because “he’s got a lot of team spirit.” Naturally, Animal Crossing fans who are fond of football (or any other sport) may have an inclination towards the athletic personality type in general, but Bill is certainly a great jock villager to start with.
7 Kid Cat
Kid Cat is a very unique Animal Crossing villager who players would like to hang out with. While many jock villagers aspire to be professional athletes, Kid Cat is very clearly modeled after traditional superheroes. This energetic cat villager’s favorite saying explicitly reminds players and other villagers that “Crime doesn’t pay!”
While Kid Cat’s crime-fighting goals are a bit different from the standard goals of jock villagers, he is still a very competitive and energetic villager to keep around. If anything, the uniqueness of Kid Cat’s character design may make him a perfect addition for players who want to diversify the personalities present on their island.
6 Roald
This navy blue penguin is an incredibly fun addition to the extensive cast of jock villagers featured throughout the Animal Crossing games. Roald’s anatomy as a penguin villager may leave some questions as to which sports he even plays.
As explained in Roald’s Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp description, “his reach is too short for him to ever be a b-baller,” and according to his Animal Crossing e-Reader card, Roald can’t do any push-ups because “when he’s lying on his belly, his arms don’t even reach the floor!” However, Roald still serves as a great jock villager to have around because he is always ready to organize some sort of competition with players and other villagers alike. Even though he lacks the traditional appearance of an athlete, Roald possesses the active spirit of a jock villager who is always ready to compete.
5 Dom
Dom was added to the Animal Crossing universe as one of the eight new villagers in New Horizons. He is a sheep villager with the jock personality type and an appreciation for the shiny things in life. This bright pink athlete does his best to stand as an example for others to be their best selves, broadcasting his favorite saying as “Be true to your most shiny self.”
With his big, sparkling eyes and the rainbow spirals on his favorite shirt, Dom is a great fit for islands featuring bright themes. He’s always enthusiastic about physical activities such as sprinting and playing catch. With his active spirit and colorful appearance, Dom is a worthy candidate for one of the best starting villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
4 Antonio
As introduced in his Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp description, Antonio is a jock villager who “likes to keep it real.” Jock villagers are usually very direct in conversation, and Antonio is no exception. However, Antonio further emphasizes his appreciation for simplicity in Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer with a thought bubble that reads “Sometimes the simple things are really the best!”
While Antonio may not be very complex, this villager’s single-mindedness allows him to be doubly passionate about the things that he does care about. As a general rule, these passions include fitness and the happiness of his friends. For players looking for a straightforward jock villager, Antonio is the ideal character who won’t disappoint.
3 Sprocket
Without even delving into Sprocket’s personality, this particular ostrich villager demonstrates a particularly intriguing appearance. While Sprocket has a relatively normal ostrich body, he possesses a fully metallic neck and head with visible metal plating and screws. However, he is a fun villager even beyond his unusually robotic physical features.
Sprocket is a unique jock villager because he’s one of the few who has a music hobby as one of his defining characteristics. Unsurprisingly, the majority of the musical instruments in his house seem to be electronic, just like Sprocket. Some instruments include an electric guitar, amps, a drum set, and a DJ turntable. He likes to compete against players in snaring fish and catching bugs, making him one of the more competitive jock villagers.
2 Axel
At first glance, Axel is a cute blue elephant villager who doesn’t seem terribly different from any other of the best Animal Crossing villagers. However, Axel sets an outstanding example for both players and other villagers to avoid comparing themselves to one another. Axel is always smiling and, like other jock villagers, always striving to set his own personal records.
However, Axel’s favorite saying is “Do not compare a fly with an elephant.” Realistically, a fly will never be able to lift the same weight as an elephant, and an elephant will never be able to fly. Therefore, everybody should be striving for their own personal bests, rather than comparing themselves to others. Axel is thus the most sensible of the jock villagers and one who never lets his enthusiasm for his sport get in the way of maintaining his healthy self-esteem.
1 Poncho
While Poncho may look very young as a cub villager, he has been featured in every Animal Crossing game players have seen thus far. Perhaps Poncho’s success is due to his strong desire to explore new places. This athletic cub’s favorite saying is “Fortune favors the brave,” after all.
Of course, Poncho’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons house speaks volumes about his attitude regarding others. As evidenced by the presence of three sets of bunk beds in Poncho’s home, this hardworking bear cub obviously strives to provide a comfy space for his friends to rest alongside him. Poncho is also obsessed with fitness, with bodybuilding being his primary athletic pursuit in the game.
