10 Best Movie References In This Is The End

In 2013, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg made their long-awaited directorial debut with the apocalyptic comedy This is the End. Aside from its pitch-black sense of humor and the fact that all the actors play exaggerated versions of themselves, the movie was notable for not being lit or shot like a typical Hollywood comedy. The cinematography is dark and gloomy, like a horror movie.

On top of being filmed like a horror movie, This is the End contains references to such horror classics as The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby. There are also hilarious nods to the cast’s own work, like Moneyball, and other apocalyptic movies like T2 and The Road Warrior.

10 A Clockwork Orange (1971)

When the guys are boarding up James Franco’s house and choosing which rooms to sleep in, Craig Robinson claims a giant ceramic penis sculpture that he plans to make a tent with.

This penis sculpture is a reference to Stanley Kubrick’s darkly comic dystopian epic A Clockwork Orange, in which Alex DeLarge uses a similar sculpture to murder the “Cat Lady.”

9 Moneyball (2011)

Jonah Hill was hot off an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Moneyball when This is the End was made, so the movie has a few self-deprecating nods to Hill’s newfound success as a serious actor – including Danny McBride pointing out that Hill is “an Academy Award-nominated person.”

When Hill prays to God at the end of the second act, he introduces himself as “Jonah Hill… from Moneyball.” Then, he casually asks God to kill Jay Baruchel and says, “That’d be so tight.”

When Jay first arrives in Hollywood, Seth invites him as a plus-one to Franco’s party. Jay doesn’t want to go because all the other guests are Seth’s friends, but Seth assures him, “Nobody puts Jay in the corner.”

This is a nod to the classic ‘80s romance Dirty Dancing. When Patrick Swayze’s Johnny falls for Jennifer Grey’s Baby, he promises her, “Nobody puts Baby in the corner.”

7 Gladiator (2000)

10 Best Movie References In This Is The End

While Jay and Seth are taking their shift to break through the floor into the storage space where all the water is, they reminisce about their early experiences in Hollywood.

Jay recalls that before they went to see Ridley Scott’s swords-and-sandals epic Gladiator in the theater, Seth accepted a bet to eat $20’s worth of Taco Bell. As a result of eating a ridiculous amount of Taco Bell food, when the tigers entered the gladiatorial arena in the movie, Seth “sharted.”

6 Rosemary’s Baby (1968)

10 Best Movie References In This Is The End

An early horrifying sequence in Rosemary’s Baby sees Guy and his new Satan-worshipping friends initiating a supernatural ritual to get Rosemary impregnated by the Devil. Rosemary initially thinks she’s dreaming until she realizes it’s real.

After praying to God to kill Jay, Jonah has a similar demonic encounter in the middle of the night. He even signs off with the same line as Mia Farrow’s Rosemary: “This is no dream! This is really happening!”

5 Forrest Gump (1994)

10 Best Movie References In This Is The End

When Jay speaks to Craig and Emma Watson out by the pool, Watson assumes he’s a hipster based on his tight jeans and disinterested demeanor. Jay claims he isn’t a hipster, but Craig decides to test him.

He mentions Robert Zemeckis’ popcorn history lesson Forrest Gump as an example of a movie that hipsters hate just because everybody else loves it. Lo and behold, Jay thinks it’s “a horrendous piece of sh*t.”

4 The Road Warrior (1981)

10 Best Movie References In This Is The End

George Miller’s first sequel to Mad Max, The Road Warrior, which plunged Max from a dystopian near-future into a lawless wasteland, is one of the most iconic post-apocalyptic movies ever made, so it makes sense that This is the End would pay homage to it.

When Franco’s house burns to the ground and he, Seth, and Jay go on the run in his Prius, they encounter Danny’s cannibalistic cult. The leatherbound, armored look of Danny’s cult followers is modeled after Lord Humungus’ biker gang in The Road Warrior.

3 Zombie Flesh Eaters (1979)

10 Best Movie References In This Is The End

There are a lot of memorable wardrobe choices in Rogen and Goldberg’s movies, from Seth’s Richard Pryor t-shirt in Superbad or Dale’s beige suit in Pineapple Express.

All throughout This is the End, Jay wears a t-shirt bearing a stylized illustration of the iconic scene in Zombie Flesh Eaters in which a zombie fights a shark underwater.

2 Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

10 Best Movie References In This Is The End

When Jay is explaining that he believes the end of the world they’re experiencing is the Christian Apocalypse, he namechecks “Judgment Day” from the Bible.

However, Seth doesn’t realize it’s a reference to the Bible and thinks it’s a reference to Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Jay is saying that the end-times are a result of God’s wrath, but Seth thinks it’s because “Skynet went live.”

1 The Exorcist (1973)

After Jonah is possessed by a demon, the other survivors knock him out, tie him to a bed, and convene in a dark room to discuss what to do with him. There’s a hilarious title card – “The Exorcism of Jonah Hill” – complete with spooky organ music.

Jay’s plan to exorcize the demon possessing Jonah is to confront him with a makeshift crucifix and recite lines from The Exorcist: “The power of Christ compels you!” This doesn’t work, however, as the demon snaps back, “Guess what? It’s not that compelling!”
