RuPaul’s Drag Race has amassed a massive fanbase in its years on the air. Now in the mainstream, the art of drag has enjoyed popularity for decades now. And the series was not the first to show drag in a far-reaching medium like television. In fact, many films have shown the varied different facets of drag and its respective culture.

Some of these movies have been influences on RuPaul’s Drag Race, and both the show and these movies share common themes of self-acceptance, LGBTQ+ topics/issues, and inclusion.

10 Mommie Dearest (1981) – Available On Pluto TV

Referenced in RuPaul’s Drag Race numerous times, this film looks at famed screen siren Joan Crawford as one of the worst movie parents of all time, and the abusive relationship between her and her daughter, Christina.

The acting in this film is so over the top, it’ll remind viewers of the uber campy acting challenges of RuPaul’s Drag Race. This film is responsible for the forever iconic line, “No wire hangers ever!” Alyssa Edwards even did her version of the Joan Crawford character portrayed in the film in her All-Stars 2 snatch game — to hilarious effect.

9 The Birdcage (1996) – Available On HBO Max

In this comedy classic, gay cabaret owner Armand and his partner Albert must masquerade as a straight family when Armand’s son introduces them to his fiance’s staunch right-wing parents. Every single performance in this film is hilarious.

Hank Azaria’s Agador steals every scene he’s in, while Nathan Lane’s Albert is hysterical. Likewise, Robin Williams nails every comedic note in this film. Williams even played against type in a lot of ways for this film, as he is usually the exaggerated personality. But, in this movie, Williams plays the foil to Nathan Lane’s over-the-top character.

8 Hurricane Bianca (2016) – Available On Kanopy

Starring a Drag Race alum, Hurricane Bianca is the cinema vehicle for season 6 winner, Bianca Del Rio. Del Rio is an insult comic and this film makes full use of her “Rolodex of hate” talents. The film is about dedicated teacher Richard who moves from New York to Texas for a career opportunity. Shortly after he arrives, he is promptly fired for being gay.

With revenge on his mind, Richard dresses as a woman to become a teacher and get revenge on the bigoted townspeople. The movie also has a sequel called Hurrican Bianca: From Russia with Hate that picks up where the last film left off.

7 Pink Flamingos (1972) – Not Currently Available To Stream

Ranked as one of John Waters’ best movies, it is pretty much a given that it would be outrageous. In this underground classic, a woman and her dysfunctional family compete to be named the filthiest people alive.

As the plot suggests, this film has its share of gross-out moments with a particularly shocking scene at the end of the movie. The movie stars Water’s friend and collaborator, noted drag queen, Divine. Divine’s severe drag style and campy persona often served as a muse to Waters.

6 Kinky Boots (2005) – Available On FuboTV

In this British import, straightlaced Charlie inherits his father’s faltering shoe factory. In a serendipitous meeting, a transgender cabaret performer named Lola inspires Charlie to make erotic footwear to save the company. This change in direction for the business has its detractors with bigoted community members voicing their displeasure.

Much like RuPaul’s Drag Race, this movie addresses important issues and promotes the powerful message of the importance of self-love, inclusion, and chosen families. The friendship between the two main characters is heartwarming, and the performances are stellar, with Joel Edgerton and Chiwetel Ejiofor giving life to good-natured characters.

In ’60s Baltimore, a “pleasantly plump” (as the film refers to her) teenage girl fights for integration on a popular local TV dance show in this John Waters movie. The film has the talented Deborah Harry of Blondie as antagonist Velma Von Tussle, as well as Sonny Bono as her husband.

Water’s inspiration, Divine, plays the kind but self-conscious mother of the protagonist. And while the film features John Water’s trademark kitsch, it proved to be a major departure for both him and Divine. John Water’s previous films were raunchy and vulgar with a very small, niche intended audience. Likewise, most of Divine’s previous characters featured the star in loud and abrasive roles. This movie showed both individuals stretching themselves creatively and pushing their artistic boundaries.

An innocent engaged couple becomes stranded at the bizarre mansion of gender-bending Dr. Frank N Furter when their car breaks down in this, one of the most influential movie musicals of all time.

The film’s irreverent and playful attitudes toward gender, sex, and sexual orientation were groundbreaking for the ’70s and continue to strike a chord today. The catchy songs are hard to beat, like “Time Warp” and “Hot Patootie (Bless My Soul).” Moreover, the characters of Frank’s entourage are so outside the box that it’s hard to not like them.

3 The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) – Available On Hoopla

An Australian outing, this movie follows three drag queens who tour their way through the outback towards their last gig that holds a surprise for the three. The costumes of this film are to die for, with striking colors and unique silhouettes. The film’s wardrobe was even nominated for the Best Costume Design Award at the Oscars.

Each of the three characters has a fully drawn, three-dimensional personality, endearing them to the audience from the start. The film’s positive portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters helped to push movies with similar subject matter into the mainstream, much like how Rupaul’s Drag Race has done, many years later.

2 Paris Is Burning (1991) – Available On The Criterion Channel

In this documentary, New York City’s drag and drag ball community is put on display. The film, at the time of its release, served as a window into drag and ball culture that many audience members may not have been able to see otherwise.

Introducing many of house culture’s best and brightest, like Willie Ninja, Pepper LaBeija, and Dorian Corey, among others, the film is an important beginner’s course on drag and its rich culture. It is wide-reaching, touching on the issues of poverty and racism that many ball members face in the community, even in a city as liberal as New York.

The audience becomes invested in the characters and their lives, whether it be the main three characters or the residents of the town. From the costumes to the acting, this movie is enjoyable from start to finish.
