4 American Gods

The book is easily one of the most essential fantasy novels, and not a soft read either. It’s a bit of a slow burn, but it’s a road trip with familiar faces across mythology that any fan of gods and monsters can appreciate.

The TV series is a whole different animal. While it definitely takes what it needs two from the book, the show less of a road trip and more of a psychedelic one. It’s a character study of the different gods Shadow encounters during his service to Wednesday/Odin. It’s strange, but it works.

3 Good Omens

Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett are two authors that played very well together, and Good Omens is the product of that blessed collaboration. The novel has the humor and charm of Pratchet’s Discworld, but with Gaiman’s gift for satire and rapier wit.

The TV show follows the book brilliantly, but Gaiman also throws in a few extra goodies to satisfy a more modern audience. And no one can resist the sardonic charms of David Tennant as Crowley.

2 Coraline

It might be a children’s book, it might have an animated movie, but Coraline is one of the greatest horror stories ever penned, and one novel everyone should read before watching the film. The threat of an evil entity that eats children lurking in an old house will never cease to be unnerving. The stop-motion puppets don’t exactly soften the blow either.

The film adaptation is a great introduction to horror for younger viewers, and the book has several scenes even adult readers will find unnerving. Simply put, it’s a great fit for both audiences.

The Sandman will forever be one of Neil Gaiman’s best comics and most prolific and beloved character. Essentially taking a long-forgotten DC character who was essentially thrown away and turning him into something incredible with otherworldly powers is no small feat.

With a phenomenal graphic novel series incorporating figures from fairytales, myths, history, and even The Justice League, there are plenty of reasons to pick up The Sandman. Now all fans have to do is wait for the upcoming Netflix series.
