All 3 Versions Of Zods Superman 2 Ending Explained

There are three different versions of General Zod’s defeat in Superman 2, and each one gives the Kryptonian villain a different fate. Starring Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder, the classic sequel to the groundbreaking 1978 Superman films, Superman 2 has General Zod, along with his cohorts, Ursa and Non, menace the Earth as Clark Kent is struggling with his dual identity and commitment to Lois Lane. Superman’s defeat of Zod at the end of the film is depicted rather vaguely in the theatrical cut, but the director’s cut and a deleted scene depict different outcomes for the General.

In the third act of Superman 2, Superman’s conflict with General Zod and his followers takes them to the Fortress of Solitude, where Superman tricks the trio into losing their powers via the crystal chamber’s power deactivating ability. Superman defeats Zod, sending him down a chasm, where he’s soon followed by Non and Ursa. The film doesn’t show the trio again, so their fates appear ambiguous, at best. Considering their lack of powers and the Fortress of Solitude’s Arctic location, it’s difficult to imagine the de-powered Kryptonians surviving their plunge, making them perhaps the only people that Superman kills in the Richard Donner films.

Considering the lighthearted and family-friendly nature of the older Superman films, it seems unlikely that Superman killed Zod and his minions, especially considering that he’d just rendered them powerless and virtually harmless moments earlier. Regardless of this, no explanation of their fate is explained in the theatrical cut. There is a deleted scene, however, that confirms their survival, and the director’s cut of the film seemingly confirms their deaths, only to undo them shortly afterward.

A deleted scene for Superman 2 shows a group of Arctic Patrol officers arresting the living but powerless Kryptonians after Superman defeats them. The scene also includes Lex Luthor’s arrest, tying into Superman III, where he’s imprisoned once more. This deleted scene was included in non-American television broadcasts of the film, and they confirm Zod’s survival, something that the theatrical cut should have included.

In the Richard Donner Cut of Superman 2, Zod and his minions aren’t seen again after their defeat in the Fortress, and Superman seemingly ensures their demise by destroying the structure with his heat vision. Superman then reverses time, just like he did at the end of the first film, sending Zod and his cohorts back into the Phantom Zone and undoing their assault on Earth. Whether Zod survived his defeat or not, the entire conflict was undone by Superman’s time travel.

Viewers often compare Zod’s defeat in Superman 2 to his death in Man of Steel, claiming that Zod died in the classic film. Although his survival seems ambiguous in the theatrical cut of Superman 2, the deleted scene and director’s cut prove that he almost certainly survived in all three versions. Man of Steel used Zod’s death as an origin for Superman’s rule against killing, but in the classic films, Zod never died in the first place. Superman appears to already be against killing in Superman 2, and all three of Zod’s endings confirm this.
