Throughout history women have paved the way for other women; fighting to create new possibilities and opportunities for those who come after them, and that tenacious spirit will be on full display in Better Angels: A Kate Warne Adventure. In award-winning writer Jeff Jensen’s just-announced upcoming graphic novel, he and artist George Schall explore the exploits, life, and achievements of America’s first female detective.

Oftentimes women have walked in the shadows of history, taking a backseat to the powerful men that walk the center stage, but now an important story is being told in an exciting new fashion balking that tradition. The real-life Kate Warne was is not only considered by many to be America’s first female detective, she is also responsible for changing history. Her dedication, tenacity, knowledge, and cunning allowed her to help foil an assassination attempt on Abraham Lincoln’s life that would have ended his presidency before it even began.

Coming from by BOOM! Studios, this graphic novel will explore Warne’s feats, her role in saving the president’s life, and the impact she had on the world of female law enforcement as a whole. Writer Jeff Jensen was stunned by the sheer impressiveness of Warne and her achievements when he first stumbled across her story. He wondered how a women from a small town in the 1800s managed to achieve all she did, and he thinks this novel “is an answer to that question in the form of a historical fiction adventure that challenges some of this country’s self-serving myths that all too often pass for history.” Executive editor Kate Hahn also says the creative team of Jensen and Schall have created a “captivating and moving story of not just one incredibly courageous woman… but the group of women detectives she inspired” as well.

The news of the graphic novel came just in time for International Women’s Day; a day to empower and celebrate all of the strong women who are at the foundation of our society. Marvel also joined in the celebration with the release of stunning and powerful variant covers for their upcoming Women of Marvel comic book coming in April.

The timing could not have been more perfect for this preview. International Woman’s Day isn’t just for the women who rule the world now, but for those who paved the road and made equality, certain jobs, higher education, and much more possible for females the world over. There’s still more to do to achieve equality and freedom for women everywhere, but people like Kate Warne provided a huge stepping stone for them, while also saving much more than women in her efforts for justice. She helped save the man who ended slavery, kicked major seditionist butt, and went undercover with the best of them. Better Angels: A Kate Warne Adventure hits the shelves in October, giving readers the opportunity to experience the life of one of American history’s most important detectives. This is one story the history books would be good to remember.
