Despite its massive success, the MCU does have its share of critics. Some feel that the shared universe makes for too many movies that feel the same and don’t take enough risks. While there may be some truth to the criticism, the MCU is known for keeping fans on their toes with their storytelling.

While the MCU movies clearly pay a lot of respect to the comics, they aren’t afraid to play around with the established storylines and go in totally new directions. The movies often subvert fans’ expectations and have a lot of fun doing it. Here are the best plot twists in the MCU, ranked.

10 Ego Is Evil (Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2)

One of the big questions left at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy was the identity of Peter Quill’s father. It is revealed that whoever he is, he is not from Earth and appears to be a very powerful being.

The sequel wastes little time addressing the question as the Celestial being Ego shows up to meet his long-lost son. Quill and Ego slowly begin to bond as the godlike Ego shows Quill the power they could possess. Then Ego reveals his true plan of conquering the universe and even admits to killing Quill’s mother.

9 Loki Is Alive (Thor: The Dark World)

After nearly destroying New York City in The Avengers, Loki is imprisoned on Asgard at the beginning of Thor: The Dark World. But in order to defeat the Dark Elves, Thor is forced to free his brother and get his help.

Loki surprises everyone by actually helping Thor and even giving his life to protect his brother. However, the last moments of the film show that Loki faked his death in order to steal the throne of Asgard from his father Odin.

8 Mysterio’s True Identity (Spider-Man: Far From Home)

When Quentin Beck aka Mysterio is introduced in Spider-Man: Far From Home, he appears to be a hero from another dimension who came to Earth to help defeat the Elementals. But fans of the comic knew that Mysterio was always a villain and a master of illusion, so there was likely more than meets the eye with him.

While the reveal that he is a villain might not have surprised everyone, his backstory was a fun twist. It turns out Beck is a disgruntled Stark Industries employee who invented the B.A.R.F. technology and was not using it to create his illusions.

7 The Skrulls Aren’t Evil (Captain Marvel)

With the Skrulls being introduced into the MCU in Captain Marvel, many fans expected the Kree-Skrull storyline from the comics would be set up. However, the movie decided to play with the Skrulls’ comic book history of being the villains.

After fighting the Skrull for the Kree Empire, Carol Danvers discovers that she had been lied to all along and the Skrull were in fact refugees trying to flee from the Kree regime, who are the real villains of the story.

6 The Winter Soldier Killed The Starks (Captain America: Civil War)

In Captain America: Civil War, the heroes find themselves fighting over political issues until Tony Stark and Steve Rogers realize they were being manipulated by Zemo all along. But when they confront Zemo, his true plan is revealed.

He wanted to tear the Avengers apart by revealing the truth that Tony’s parents were killed by Bucky Barnes (aka The Winter Soldier) and Steve knew about it. The revelation makes the fight much more personal and damages the friendship between Steve and Tony in a devastating way.

5 The Vulture Is Liz’s Dad (Spider-Man: Homecoming)

Peter Parker’s main mission in Spider-Man: Homecoming was to prove that he had what it took to become an Avenger. He tries to do this by taking down the new villain Vulture (aka Adrian Toomes) but only succeeds in making a mess of things.

Peter gives up the superhero antics for a while and tries to be a normal teen, even asking Liz Allen out to the homecoming dance. When Peter arrives at Liz’s house, her father opens the door and is revealed to be Toomes. This makes for a hilariously awkward ride to the dance.

4 Asgard Is Destroyed (Thor: Ragnarok)

After having visions, Thor believes the foretold legend of Ragnarok could be coming which would mean the destruction of Asgard. His fears are further confirmed when his sister Hela returns and takes the throne for herself.

Unable to defeat Hela as she draws her power from Asgard, Thor realizes he is not meant to stop Ragnarok but instead allow it to happen. After unleashing the demon Surtur, Asgard is completely destroyed while Thor leads his people to finds a new home.

3 Hydra Has Infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. (Captain America: The Winter Soldier)

In the 1940s, Captain America fought and defeated the Red Skull and his Hydra forces before being frozen in ice. When he awakens in the 21st Century, Cap finds that the world is a lot more complex and it is not so easy to know who your enemies are.

This is made even more clear when Cap discovers Hydra never really went away and they have been secretly infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D. and other high levels of government for years. The truth brings an end to S.H.I.E.L.D. and makes for a pivotal moment in the MCU.

2 The Mandarin Is A Fake (Iron Man 3)

The Mandarin is one of Iron Man’s most famous villains from the comics. Though he had been hinted at in previous films, Iron Man 3 was finally ready to bring the big bad to life. Ben Kingsley took the role which presents Mandarin as a brutal and ruthless terrorist. At least, that’s how it seemed.

When Tony Stark comes face-to-face with the villain, he is revealed to be a washed-up British actor who is only pretending to be a terrorist on television. Not everyone liked the twist, but it was everyone has to admit that they didn’t see it coming.

1 Thanos Wins (Avengers: Infinity War)

The entire MCU up until this point has focused on the epic Infinity Saga storyline which built up into the introduction of Thanos and his plan to wipe out half of all life in the universe. Avengers: Infinity War deals with the heroes’ desperate attempt to stop Thanos at all costs.

Unlike what fans are used to seeing from superhero movies, the heroes fail to stop Thanos. He snaps his fingers and half of the universe, including many of the MCU’s most popular heroes, are wiped out. It is one of the most shocking endings in recent memory.
