American Dad is a hilarious and often strange show that revolves around the Smith family. The Smith family consists of CIA agent Stan, ditzy housewife Francine, hippy Haley, dorky Steve, a talking German fish named Klaus, and a flamboyant alien named Roger. Not the typical Americana family by any means.

However, the show’s sharp-witted humor and funny characterization make this show a must-watch for fans of Seth MacFarlane’s works. For those who are a fan of this animated comedy series, these shows are sure to please.

10 Duncanville (2020-) – Available On Hulu

This animated comedy of a family with an exceedingly average daydreamer son is a sincere and humorous look at family dynamics. In the same vein as American Dad, the show features differing family members who clash but also display love for one another. Duncanville is a more sincere show, almost the antithesis to American’s Dad’s more cynical humor. The cast of this show is also filled with talented comedic actors like Amy Poehler (who is a co-creator of the show), Ty Burrell, and Rashida Jones.

9 The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy (2001-2007) – Available On HBO Max

The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy is a surreal cartoon that follows the strange escapades of the Grim Reaper and two children he is forced to be friends with after he loses a limbo competition to them. The series’s concept plays around with Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal, which features a man playing chess with death personified. The Dali-esque animation mixed with the silly humor made this series a fun but weird watch for viewers of all ages. This show, like American Dad, has featured very bizarre plot lines, making these two series surprisingly similar.

8 Big Mouth (2017-) – Available On Netflix

Best friends Nick, Andrew, and Jessi navigate the harsh road of puberty together in this animated comedy series. This show’s gags are very much in line with American Dad’s crude humor at times.

Further, both shows comment on the pitfalls of growing up and puberty. This series makes clear all the crummy things about maturing, both emotionally and physiologically. Big Mouth could be seen as a manual for puberty, albeit a very clever, silly, and funny one.

7 The Boondocks (2005-2014) – Available On HBO Max

In this series, two brothers from the Southside of Chicago experience a culture clash when they move with their grandfather to the suburbs. Making many interesting points on race and culture through a humorous animated lens, The Boondocks excels in its social commentary. By presenting Huey as a revolutionary type while his brother Riley is shown as a product of rap culture, the show intelligently shows the many dimensions of the Black community. Much like American Dad, The Boondocks presents its opinions through silly and farcical situations. In effect, this great cartoon series for grownups never comes across as heavy-handed or preachy.

6 Aqua Teen Hunger Force (2000-2015) – Available On HBO Max

This Adult Swim series told the daily misadventures of a sentient and adult-sized box of fries, a meatball, and a milkshake. Frylock is the smartest of the group while Shake is the more irresponsible and obnoxious. Meatwad is the most innocent and sweet-natured of the bunch. They usually deal with crazy and outlandish situations that could range from alien visitors to mad scientists. This is in line with the often ridiculous storylines in American Dad.

5 F Is For Family (2015-) – Available On Netflix

A brash alpha male type father is something both this Netflix show and American Dad have in common. Taking place in the ’70s, this raunchy animated family comedy was inspired by comedian Bill Burr’s youth. The story revolves around Korean war veteran Frank and his dysfunctional Irish American family. The series acts as a love letter to the ’70s. In another similar way to American Dad, this series has a slew of famous guest stars. Some who have guested on F is for Family include Allison Janney, Vince Vaughn, and the late Michael K. Williams.

4 Drawn Together (2004-2007) – Available On Paramount+

A group of clashing personalities under one roof applies to both this “animated reality show” and American Dad. Riffing on reality shows The Real World and Big Brother, the series is about a group of animated archetype characters paired together as housemates for a reality show.

The characters are homages to different animated characters that range from animation styles, genres, and decades. For instance, Toot Braunstein is a parody of Betty Boop while the character Ling-Ling is based on Pokemon’s Pikachu.

3 The Oblongs (2001-2002) – Available To Buy On Amazon Video

In this bizarre series, a loving but eccentric family who live in a toxic waste inhabited valley contend with the perfect, rich upper crust of the Hill people. While on the surface, the series may seem like the typical adult animated series. But, the show actually communicates some smart points on class struggles and how the lower economic classes are more at risk for the effects of environmental degradation. The film’s stellar voice cast includes Will Ferrell, Jean Smart, and veteran voice actor Pamela Adlon. Much like how American Dad sometimes comments on sociopolitical issues, The Oblongs did a fantastic job of humorously presenting the very serious issue of economic inequality.

2 Reno 911! (2003 -) – Available On HBO Max

The outrageous cops of Reno are front and center in this documentary-style series from Comedy Central. Each character has their own crazy personality, much like the assorted characters of American Dad. The array of Reno citizens and criminals as well as their interactions with the inept Reno cops makes this show deserving of its loyal cult following. All the characters are absurd yet also retain some sort of resemblance to individuals you might find in a reality-based show like Cops. With so many fantastic episodes of Reno 911!, any prospective viewer could not go wrong with giving this comedy gem a chance.

1 The Cleveland Show (2009-2013) – Available On Hulu

This Seth MacFarlane series looked at Family Guy character Cleveland Brown and his new family in Stoolbend, Virginia. When Cleveland reunites with his high school crush, the two fall in love and join families with Cleveland gaining a new stepdaughter and stepson in addition to his misfit son, Junior. As this show is courtesy of the same creator, similarities between the two are pretty much guaranteed. Everything from the animation style to the sense of humor of the two series is akin to one another.
